  1. The Sunrisers are extremely excited to welcome J. Frank Nash to our staff for 2012 in the capacity of Percussion Caption Head and Battery Arranger. Mr. Nash brings with him a wealth of drum corps experience, having begun his career at the age of six in a small corps from Brooklyn, NY that was an offshoot of the Loyal Order of Odd Fellows fraternal organization. Mr. Nash then continued his junior corps career with the Wynn Center Toppers, the St. Joseph Patron Cadets and the nationally ranked St. Rita's Brassmen of Brooklyn, NY. From 1973 until the present, Mr. Nash has enjoyed associations with the New York Skyliners, Harrison Bushwackers, Hawthorne Caballeros, Syracuse Brigadiers, Atlanta Corpsvets and Fusion Core in the Drum Corps Associates' (DCA) arena. During that time he has been fortunate enough to be part of a record nine DCA World Championships and one American Legion National Title. In addition, Mr. Nash was also an integral part of seven DCA Percussion Titles. Mr. Nash is also a 3-time DCA individual Snare Drumming Champion. Mr. Nash has previously served as Percussion Caption Head and Arranger for various drum corps and high school bands in the tri-sate area, most notably the Caballeros, Skyliners, Corpsvets and the Lehigh Valley Knights in DCI Division III. In September of 2007, Mr. Nash was inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame and is a member of the Vic Firth educational team…

  4. I find the perception that all use is abuse is just ludicrous. Most people can use and enjoy any drug on an occasional basis. I say most because there is a percentage of our society who are predisposed to addiction. I once attended a lecture given by Dr. Solcomb. Dr. Solcomb has being running a drug treatment facility in San Francisco since the early 60’s and is considered an expert in both use and abuse. His lecture was very informative and contained some very interesting facts. The most physically addictive drug, a drug that if 100 people are exposed to over a period of time that all 100 will become physically dependent, is…nicotine! Opiates and cocaine and their derivatives were also very high on the list, but nicotine was number 1. Alcohol is also high on the list. Near the bottom of the list was cannabis. He did point out that while marijuana is not physically addictive, it can be psychology addicting. He also talked about a patient he had and his family. His two sisters thought their brother was the scourge of the family because of his drug addiction. Yet, one sister was over 100lbs overweight and the other was in extreme financial trouble because her inability to control her spending. Dr. Solcomb pointed out that they all suffered from the same disease. One was addicted to drugs, one to food and the other to shopping. PBS just did a very interesting documentary on the 18th amendment, prohibition. The main point was the prohibition didn’t prevent people from drinking, but caused people to hold police in contempt, made the police susceptible to corruption, removed a major tax resource and led to the growth of major crime organizations. Prohibition didn’t work for alcohol and its not working for drugs. As far as drug use in DC. I’m sure current members use illegal drug at the same rate as their peers. I marched in the early ’70s in a corps that was located less then 60 miles from the Haight. Illegal drug use was rampant. At almost every rest stop members were sneaking off to smoke a doobie. I heard speed was very popular with the percussionists. As the years passed the use of drugs gradually declined in the corps, just as it did in society. In reality drug use in DC, both legal and illegal, is reflective of drug use in our society.

  6. BAC just announced their 2012 named 'Titan' Below are some of the selections Pines of Rome (Respighi) War Dance from Belkis Queen of Sheba (Respighi) Lacrimosa from Requiem for a Freind (Preisner) Symphone #1 (Titan) (Mahler) Sounds like a good match for BAC. I think Cavaliers played 'Belkis' in 1994. Great peice. I assume they will put their own spin on 'Pines' just like they did last year with 'Le Miz' and '1812. It's great to see more of a stronger identity developing from BAC the past several years. With a new arranger for 2012 it should be interesting.

  8. I am so excited for this new season at crown. I wish I was young enough to march. Because I would drop everything to tryout for crowns guard this summer. It's certain to be a great experience for anyone who marches under this staff! They are so amazing! Go crown!

  9. Actually, it looks to me like you're the only one that has a problem with this. Was he told what to do? Probably. However, I seem to remember being told what to do when I marched. Even when I was with the Renegades. What it comes down to is this, his name is on the roster, yeah? That's all I need.

  12. Sure, that might be certainly be the case depending on how time consuming it was...or he could just take say, 15 minutes a week for an update, which would hardly be a summer buzz killer.

  17. Obviously there has been a little confusion so allow me to clarify. I don't think I've already made the corps, nor am I very cocky. In fact, it's quite the opposite. I'm often intimidated once I show up to auditions. However, my success from my audition last year has given me some confidence for my upcoming audition. Also, my intention was not to behave as if I already have made the corps and I apologize that I have left that impression on the DCP community, I realize I haven't been given a contract yet and on top of that, my audition is my first priority. Not some vlog that I am only considering. When I said that I start my journey with The Cavaliers in December, I was referring to the round 1 audition which is in December. and finally, if I was to make a vlog, it wouldn't be something that represents the corps as much as it would represent what tour life is like. That being said, I still would be sure to clear it with corps management before I actually started posting videos which I had stated before. I also wouldn't even start posting until after I make the corps...if I make it. P.S - I'm not in High School.

  18. Yes, I marched my rook-out year with the Colts. I'm definitely glad I didn't pass up the opportunity to at least march corps once. It's very bitter sweet though, being a rook-out. I wish I could go back and experience being with my family again, but at least I got to participate and make memories while I could.

  19. If you are going to donate them, I suggest you contact Steve Vickers @ Drum Corps World. He has (or had) a Drum Corps Trivia Exhibition at LOS each year during DCI Championship week. Not sure if he did it more than one year. Since it's one box it would probably be easy to ship it to him. I moved this past May and packed up all 280 of my DCI tee collection into suitcases and boxes. I'm willing to give them to Steve, but don't have the $$$ for shipping !! I also have 90 WGI tees and 50 DCA tees, If anyone is interested, pm or e-mail me. All DCI tees are from '89-11. DCA tees are '64-'06 and WGI tees are '93-'11. Thanks--Norm Reed

  20. No. I had many options, and no money. I wanted to age out at Crossmen after marching my first two seasons. But making the trip out to camps from Philly was impossible. And i needed to work. I almost filled a hole... and was going to quit my job, but I ended up having to stay home to watch my dogs while my parents were on Vacation. I was pretty ######. I also almost filled a hole at Crown at one point over the summer. But none of it actually materialized. But I really wanted to age out at Crossmen (that is why I passed up the Crown spot). Regrets... Yes and No. If I would have marched again, I don't even want to imagine my financial situation right now. Because it's already pretty crappy from spending all my saved up money on marching two seasons. And even got a lot of help in '09, which I am very grateful for. I regret not ageing out. But it also wasn't the best season to march in the corps if you look back. Looking back on it all... I hate to say this... I regret nothing about my experience as a member of the Crossmen. I had an amazing instructional staff and have family I can always count on all over the country. However, if I could go back in time, I wouldn't have done it. Maybe one season. But It has put me so far behind in other aspects of my life. I DON'T regret it. Don't get me wrong. But the financial burden it has put me in is no fun. My advice, only do drum corps if you can actually afford it. I know... there goes over half of the current members for all corps. But it is just too costly. It is a great deal money wise. A lot of summer camps that last for a week or to are as much or more than the cost of drum corps. But the time commitment and money commitment just did not work out well for me. Life has just caught up to me really fast lately. Sorry for getting long winded. it is just something I have thought about a lot. Basically I don't regret not marching my age out. But I do think and go back and forth on my time in drum corps constantly.

  22. I absolutely agree with both of you. Plus, permits are typically given only after a process of review. Someone coming in for one day wouldn't have the luxury of waiting for the process to take its course. And then there's the issue with having the necessary steps taken to collect sales tax. It's a well-intentioned idea that would be great if feasible. Another thing to consider is that many of these shows are hosted by high school bands whose volunteers work the events to raise money for their programs. In many (if not most or all) cases, the show sponsors would have no incentive to allow the corps to sell food because it would be slashing their profits. The novelty of buying food from a corps food truck would be quite tempting for many attendees. One hears how movie theaters make much of their money not from ticket sales, but from concessions. Although I have no figures to back this up, I wouldn't be surprised if concession sales are a major portion of the profits of those organizations that sponsor corps contests.

  23. It’s not that far off. The outrage. The indignation. The righteous dismay. Soon corps will begin revealing their 2012 programs to be followed inevitably by the usual second-guessing and sniping along with some legitimate criticism on DCP. The judges will have their view. So will the DCP grand jury. What will we despise? What will set our blood to boil? What will inspire us to forecast the demise of drum corps? Check the list. Cast your ballot for the one issue that you think will raise the most bile on DCP in 2012. Get it right. If not, we might all have to agree to agree in 2013! HH

  24. I've said it before and I'll say it again....the Odello family bleeds more Blue than Tommy Lasorda. Not only did Rick march, his future wife was in the guard. I'm guessing the only name in the activity with more connection to a specific corps is Don Warren at Cavies.

  25. If you really knew the BD organization, you'd know that they are upfront and honest about who has, and has not marched in their organization. In fact, I know for certain, that just because your name is Odello, does not guarantee you a spot in BD. You've got to earn it like everyone else. Andrew is the real deal. FYI - it was his grandparents that started the entire organization. His Dad Rick, marched snare and wrote the book (along with Terry Shalberg) and taught in 1976 +, and now manages the three-peat "B" corps.

  26. ... and another reason why you shouldn't. You'll have a different experience. Different from other rookies. Different from other vets. They'll be living it. You'll just be recording it. Think about all the conversations you won't be participating in. Think of the conversations that won't take place at all because someone is recording. When the others are having fun spontaneously, you'll be reaching for the camera. While they're communicating silently, you'll be looking for a better angle or better light. I feel sorry for the people who feel compelled to record all the events of their lives. They're working when they could be enjoying. You should be enjoying too. HH

  27. What a jaundiced view of things. This is a depressing thread that is bound not to end well in my opinion, and I'm not sure what the motivations are for it. Who cares what will be the topics of most controversy, most interest, or a lightening rod for discussion this year. Just sit back and see what shakes out. My hunch, they'll be enough topics that'll come about to wet the appetite of all tastes during the coming months.

  29. I was trying to have fun with it. Sorry if my attempt at humor failed. The point is DCP does produce plenty of outrage each season. I thought it would be fun to forecast what will outrage us next year. Anyone who doesn't want to play isn't obligated of course. Anyone who wishes can yell at me at Lucas Oil in August. I'll be the one cheering for every corps. HH

  30. I freely concede that my approach to this thread failed to recognize the potential to upset some legitimate sensitivities. You're going to have to take me at my word that I just wanted to have fun projecting what might annoy us most next year. That's all. Why not have some fun seeing what we as a group expect to go wrong? Because something always does. Is that really so wrong-headed? HH

  31. Have a couple of arthritic toes (two operations) and need a shoe with the larger shoe box or it feels like the toe joints are being squeezed or rubbed against. NBs carry a shoe like this that works for me but have had to order them from the hole in the wall Foot Locker as they usually don't have them in stock. Usually live in these shoes until the snow gets too high.... As for the shoes I wear with my uni, don't know of any that aren't in the standard cut so it's bunch of Ibuprofin and suffer. OT: Only found out a few months ago that Dinkles is made in Mt Joy, PA (where?). Westview, OH has got to be bigger.... Wonder if they're near where our nephew works at the Sporting Goods Supply place (there's a pairing marching shoes and guns/archery equipment/etc).

  35. And that's all good in the world that lives in your head. You are better off starting something new...without capital...than you are with an idea to alter the course of a 40 year old business model. And it's more than just capital, so I'll grant you that. I could come to DCI with $250M and buy the whole thing, but I don't believe it would be a wise expendature on my part. And neither did Bill Cook after he walked away from DCI. So, I think two guys in a garage have a better shot at developing something new and big than reforming a not for profit or a series of not-for profit. Too many stakeholders to appease. Much of the effort will be fighting intangibles and political/emotional objections rather than those formed from logic. In short, too many people to please or move out of the way. What you suggest is not impossible, but the core (all puns intended) has to be rigid, solid, set in stone, unwavering in order to build. New Co. has to have the blessing of 4-5 current organizations' hierarchy to work. Jettison one...perhaps, but if two move out...decide their cost to benefit ratio isn't exciting enough and the house starts to collapse. Then, the whole thing could end up worse than the early 1990s of DCI...its toughest era to date. I get it. You have time to dream and be creative. That's terrific. And if you have the ear of the DMs near the center of this entity...good for you. I just haven't seen your ideas in any format where I go, "Eureka!" And without that...without the "It's made of stars!" moment...I'll pass. But keep formulating. There may be that golden nugget in there...in all of this. So far, not seeing it. And New Co. could be "The City of Indianapolis." They have as much large convention, special events, etc. experience than most cities their size. Most likely tons of expertise to leverage with them.

  40. We aren't talking about smoking or drinking and everyone reading this thread knows it.
    -1 points
  41. ...because those issues, while important, are clearly not what the thread is getting at. It's clearly about illicit drugs. Let's stop splitting hairs. Smoking is bad. Alcohol is a drug. There. We've covered it. The thread is about the use of controlled substances and the abuse of OTC drugs. Both of these are prevalent issues in society (as are the issues you mentioned; please don't misunderstand me.)
    -1 points
  42. I didn't create the thread so I can't speak to why it was created. Sugar-coating the issue doesn't solve anything. Just as when corps make poor decisions to hire pedophiles, predators, and abusers, other bad things happen behind closed doors and I'm not about to let a student march somewhere that gives approval (tacit or otherwise) to staff members abusing drugs. Those 21 years of age or older are perfectly free to drink, again so long as it occurs away from the membership, especially those members who are NOT legal adults. The value is awareness and safety. Two months ago, I would've recommended Teal Sound as a great way to get the drum corps experience at a younger age. Today? The words "teal" and "sound" won't ever leave my lips in a conversation about positive marching experience possibilities. And if we're going to keep it on the subject of tobacco, I marched with people who ONLY smoked during drum corps season. I don't get it but some of 'em swore by it.

  45. And my question is: What has Danielray done, or is doing, which indicates his credibility within business practices? In the movie "Back to School" at least Rodney Dangerfield had created a multi-million dollar business with his unorthodox practices! What has Danielray done, or is doing, which supports his position?

  46. Thank you. Now was that hard to do, really? As for me, to satisfy the blasters out there, I own a successful small business which has grown in revenue each year. I also subcontract out work to others and receive a facilitation fee for each contract. Prior to that I was mid level management for a rather large corporation. I marched and instructed corps with rings, and have been on administrative staff and a board with other corps. Now, back to discussing the thread at hand.

  47. Geez! Once and for all, I never said he didn't march ever. I didn't say that his family weren't true-blue Devils. I said that saying that a 3-year-old marched is disingenuous at best and that I'm sure he was adorable when he was dressed in his little tiny costume. I stand by that. And it's not that I have a problem (as someone stated above) it just seems that when someone has such an amazing marching career.... embellishing it does nothing but diminish his true accomplishments.
