The World Series of Drum Corps

Recommended Posts

The G7 group is not a coordinated group with a consensus on all points of their proposals. Each of the G's has their own unique needs, unique agendas, unique thoughts and ideas on how to proceed.

As I was reading this I was actually thinking how you could just swap "corps" for "G's" in your sentence. "Each corps has their own unique needs...". Yet the G7 find a way around their differences and commit to work together for the benefit of all of them, each contributing what they do best for the cause.

Considering the callous nature with which they broke their "gentlemen's agreement" with the non-G corps directors, I wonder how long it will be before the G7 start eating their own. I mean, when it comes to money, a gentlemen's agreement among friends ain't worth squat, right?

I say it won't take 5 years...

If they're able to hold it together, why couldn't they put that same effort into the same benefit in the larger context of DCI?

Oh, right...it's the money.

On a more positive note, since they'll be doing so well, that frees up funds for souvie purchases and donations to other corps that aren't so well off.

Charitable support out of spite seems an odd concept to me. If people dig Crossmen or Pioneer or Spirit, or whoever, just friggin support them already and be done with it.

Lord knows if more people actually DID that (rather than threatening to do it), perhaps those corps wouldn't be so reliant on funds from DCI to make their nut.

Drum corps is increasingly reminding me of one of my favorite movies - Glengarry Glen Ross.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104348/

It accurately depicts the environment of greed, narcissism, and selfishness, in the world of high-pressure sales. Sadly, this is what drum corps is starting to resemble....which makes you wonder what the young people are learning from all this. I actually worked one of these jobs after I graduated from college, and I just couldn't take the arrogance and hypocrisy of it all.

(I really can't believe that that MMs in the corps don't know about this. They have to know. Maybe they don't know all the details, but surely, they know. In the close-knit, day-in, day-out world of a drum corps tour, people generally know everything - even thing that perhaps they shouldn't.)

===================================================================

I was going to prepare an outrageous blast..... I was going to compare one G7 director to Blake, who was Alec Baldwin's character from this movie.....and I was going to compare another G7 director to Ricky Roma, who was Pacino's character.... But it's late, and I am tired.

OK, just one blast. Here is G1, lecturing what the other corps directors on what they will get, if they don't qualify for G7:

The G7 group is not a coordinated group with a consensus on all points of their proposals. Each of the G's has their own unique needs, unique agendas, unique thoughts and ideas on how to proceed.

The current document we are looking at now was probably written by a different G (say G1) than the individual who wrote the original powerpoint (G2, perhaps). Just because G1 does not mention some of these items in their writings does not mean that G2 has changed his mind at all about what should be done on these subjects. If G2's vision of the future includes a solid commitment that his ideas are right and valid and the best way to proceed into the future, you can bet big money that we have not seen the last of those ideas.

Is that cryptic enough for you?

they presented themselves as a unified front with common goals and the full backing of all of their executive boards in the first proposal.

You can't "own" copyright on an individual organization's name (primarily because "copyright" protects actual bodies of work, not names).

Untrue. When the 27th Lancers Reunion Corps organized themselves in 1993 on the invitation to perform in exhibition at DCI Finals in 1994 , the Corps Director George Bonfiglio, made it known that this would be their final performance as the " 27th Lancers ". After that performance, some members however wanted to continue on doing parades and exhibitions as the" 27th Lancers ". They did so, but in short order, a court order was attained that disallowed the Corps from using the name " 27th Lancers "( and for a few more years that Corps did parades and exhibitions and used the name " The Light Brigade " )

By who though..GB/ Lancers? or DCI

Sorry that this has nothing to do with the proposal per se; I had to (absolutely had to, yes) jump in and say that "World Series of Drum Corps" is not the stupidest name they could have given this new proposal. That would be "Stilton Cheese, Ironing Boards and Fishtanks of Drum Corps." "World Series" comes in second. Just as stupid as "Summer Music Games" was*, and you can't blame DCI for this one!

*I once did a phone interview with Ken Honsberger and one of the things I asked about was the choice of "The DCI Summer Music Games." He rhetorically asked me, in his best marketing-speak, "Can you think of five better words to describe what we do?" To which I responded, "Drum Corps International World Championships."

Actually I can see where this is not so dumb. These 7 corps will use the tie-in to the already understood term "World Series" as it applies to baseball. Everyone knows that only the best teams compete in baseball's world series. They will market their corps to potential members in terms of "In order to compete in the world series class of drum corps you have to march in one of these 7 corps."
