DCI 2012 Programs

Yeah...this is close to the time of the season where I weigh in with my thoughts on this whole 'secrecy thing'. Not a fan of it...mainly because I don't see the benefit for keeping a show a secret. I 'can' and 'have' seen benefits related to releasing information (vid, audio..etc) of a corps upcoming show to build interest and excitement. What's even funnier are the people who hear and see corps in the off season and don't pass along what they have seen and heard. Let me tell ya..if I heard music and/or obtained information about a corps show...I wouldn't hesitate for a second to pass along what I saw and heard.....unless the staff/management specifically asked everyone with in earshot to keep things quiet. What other activity does this? Movie info is leaked, bands albums are leaked, video game clips are leaked....why should drum corps be any different? Its news...and people love news. Even if the news changes. It keeps interest. Its a way to keep fans 'engaged' in the off season(Remember this idea...engaging fans). Just proves how the activity doesn't have a good grasp on promoting their brand. Generic camp audio/video doesn't cut it....they all look and sound the same. Promote........get fans excited to the point they can't wait to get their hand on some show material. Perhaps make a few bucks in the off season selling audio/video clips....even if they are rough cuts. Sell them for $3.00 a piece...every bit ($) helps...right? See those fuel prices lately?

Well..that's enough for my 2012 edition on this topic. In all honesty...it doesn't mean much to me anymore. Did bother me more in the past...not so much anymore.

So...to a corps management and/or staff who deliberately keep things hush hush....

Why does your corps wait so long to release details about the coming seasons show?

You are not 100% correct on your comparisons with professional entertainment (see underlined). Movies, TV shows and professional music all have "non-disclosure agreements" prior to an official release. Does that mean that info is not leaked? Of course not but it is generally illegal bootlegged spoilers that are leaked (aside from very small planned previews...which even drum corps have). The bulk of what goes on before something is released in professional entertainment is kept secret. If it were not so, nobody would pay to go see the movie, watch the TV show or buy the albums. "Spoilers" ruin marketing when overdone and or bootlegged. When too big of a spoiler is released to the public before the actual product is released, consumers make up their minds (sometimes prematurely) and a loss to the production is suffered.

Drum corps is no different. If The Blue Devils were to release a recording of a full run through from their January camp, people would come on here and beat it down to within an inch of it's life and such can damage a corps' reputation for the remainder of the season (possibly even in the subliminal minds of the judges...as word spreads fast). So no, I dissagree with those advocating full disclosure in the early winter months. Corps are smart to keep things relatively quiet during the winter. Hang in there. We will all be sitting in the stands with full disclosure by the live performances of the corps themselves before we even know it. Relax, and continue to "hype" your favorite corps until then.

Oh we'll do that regardless of when their audio is released

I believe I've been bashing their finals performances for the past oh... well all the way back to 2006... and I didn't join DCP until 2008?? Haha.

It's mainly that I just don't like their sound. Although I felt they had the best sound they have had since 2005 this past year. (Not that I don't recognize that they have played very well in recent past years, I just really don't like the sound they choose to go for. Not my cup of tea.)

I don't want a January recording because I agree that no matter the corps, it would get the whotsit kicked out of it here on DCP. I'm happy to wait until May or even June to hear a live recording.

What I would like is a january list of what corps are playing or hope to play... licencing permitting of course.

I don't think I'm alone when I say for music I don't know, I want to go out and buy the source material and listen to it before the season starts.

Come on folks, don't neg rep this guy, people are allowed to have opinions that are different than you.

I agree though. Too much treble for me... It's not a performance thing, it's just the instrumentation.

I think your trying to say that if the blue devils hornline was a woman, It would be Dolly Parton, heavy on the top. Accurate? lol

Well, I'm not management or staff of any corps, but so far this offseason my scorecard reads like this:

Of last year's top 12:

One announced its theme immediately, but changed its mind and went in a different direction. The peanut gallery criticized it for oversharing and for not having its act together.

Two announced their titles and strongly hinted at at least part of their show music. The peanut gallery criticized them for not being transparent enough.

One decided to have a little fun and announce its pieces one by one and save the title and theme for last. The peanut gallery criticized it for playing games.

One announced their title and music all at once. The peanut gallery criticized it for being too ambitious.

Not saying anything at all starts to sound like a good option, no?

Its interesting you have highlighted the 'negative'. There have been plenty of 'positive' comments regarding show announcements and released media as well. And based on what a number of corps staffs have said through the years...many of them don't choose and arrange shows with the fans in mind...so why would they care about a few negative comments from the DCP peanut gallery. What percent of all drum corps fans does DCP represent? Probably pretty small....

But i do get what you are saying....

I know the details about the title, theme, and music of one corps' show (zero points for guessing which). While the corps hasn't ordered people not to leak (nor is it freaking out if more details are out there than have been "officially" announced), guess what, I have no desire to share that information with people I don't really know on the Internet. I'll bet virtually all the "insiders" at every corps feel the same way.

That's perfectly fine...it is surely your decision to share or in this case not share show information with the masses. Although you have to admit...its not like you would be sharing U.S. military secrets....or your SS #.....its just drum corps info......

Gosh how I miss the terms "Soprano" & "Contra".

Gosh, how I miss when adults didn't act like children and complain about things that aren't important.

God how I miss when more current members respected the people who marched before them.

Gosh how I miss when people marched back in the day respected the people who march today.
