geluf
One year would be cool, but a multi-year deal would exclude me from going. It is $200 more expensive for me to fly into California then to fly into Indy...and I don't even really like Indy. Such are economics. Jeff Ream
This is a fun conversation. But to translate this from talk to action, someone will need to follow the advice of Jeff Ream and submit a bid. Ultimately, economics dictate where DCI finals are held. Weather and the travel costs for corps and fans are taken into account, but a host city can offer a sweet enough deal to trump that. You would think Florida would be the last place we would go for an outdoor event in August. Yet DCI has held championships there six times, because the hosts made DCI offers they could not refuse, in the form of up front economic incentives. agreed. Maybe with Feidler at SCV and Gibbs with BD, they could get working on that. Even then, I have a feeling leaving the ThunderBarn as it is now known will be difficut. it seemsthe PTB, both in DCI and with the corps think a dome is the only way to go. actucker
ok lets look at another Cali stat ( this from the guy in PA).. which state has the most corps, in World and Open Class? yep Cali. oh and lets look at one other option.....it's a helluva lot easier to fly in and LA and/or Frisco from anywhere in the US than it is Indy. When you add up layovers, a flight to LA takes me as much time as a flight to Indy How many corps there are in California has nothing to do with the argument. We're talking about an entire community, not individual state lines. Again, it would not be fair to ask the majority of the drum corps community to travel twice as far to championships. As for the flight info, perhaps it would take the same amount of time, but we're not talking about time for travel here. We're talking about the fact that it costs twice as much to fly that far. Again, the majority of the community would have to pay a lot more to fly to San Francisco than to Indianapolis. It might be something worth looking into, if DCI were ever to go back to a rotation of championship sites. They have no intention of doing that, however. There is a lot of stability to be found in having a consistent championships site. WGI championships have been in the same place for years, and there are tons of groups from California that make the trip. I feel bad for those groups, but on the other hand, its a lot easier to prepare an ensemble, and write a show when you know exactly what the championships venues will be like. Its a lot easier to run an ensemble when you know what the logistics will be like, where you will have to go, and how much time you will have. So, knowing that DCI will likely never go back to rotating championships, Indy, or somewhere in a similarly central location makes the most sense. fifer
One year would be cool, but a multi-year deal would exclude me from going. It is $200 more expensive for me to fly into California then to fly into Indy...and I don't even really like Indy. Such are economics. I agree, it would be great to have finals in Santa Clara area once every five years. I'm for bringing back the alternating finals locations. I prefer to get full value for my dollar by going somewhere I haven't been to repeatedly for the past four years - the finals trip takes up the majority of my vacation savings each year. And not only is the airfare considerably more, the overall cost of living is 89% higher in Santa Clara than in Indianapolis according to bestplaces.net. So costs for everything will be higher for the corps and for the fans. Some of the stats from that site: Using the US average as 100%, the relative costs would be: Indianapolis / Santa Clara Overall: 91% / 172% Food: 96% / 112% Housing: 70% / 320% Utilities: 111% / 140% Transportation: 96% / 120% Health: 102% / 119% Misc.: 96% / 103% While not a reason to avoid Santa Clara totally, definitely a reason to limit the visits to once every four or five years. flugelswerebugels
This whole thread reminds me of conversations I have had repeatedly with my east coast in-laws: Me: "Why don't you come visit us?" Them: "Its too far to go to the west coast. Why don't you come east?"
Cache_Money
isn't California where all the tubas are getting stolen? It's worth mentioning that the music for which the tubas are being stolen is called bando.
Jambando
and having to bus from warmup to the gate should not be acceptable. IMO, the Rose Bowl was a crappy venue. You have to bus to the gate at Lucas Oil as well. Not to mention, as a performer, having a police escort is pretty cool.
Contra94
The surrounding area of the stadium also has plenty of warmup areas, the GA parking lots, various businesses across the street and the convention center. There is a parking lot BEHIND the theme park for employees where the corps can warm up, and possibly cut through the park to get to the stadium
Ghost
You have to bus to the gate at Lucas Oil as well. Not to mention, as a performer, having a police escort is pretty cool. Have never spent any time in Indy, so I wasn't aware of police escorts during finals. Is that from schools-to-stadiums then back to schools, or just around the stadium? Sometimes during pre-planning, the security group requets (demands?) extra security for whatever. It's an easy way for LEO's to get some detail work. soccerguy315
Are you for real? Maybe you should look at a map of CA. You may notice that the Rose Bowl is in Pasadena. Pasadena is in Southern CA, you know like LA. Santa Clara is in Northern CA, like San Francisco! Some of the arguments in this thread are beyond stupid. umm... are you for real? I was commenting on the Rose Bowl... not California geography. Thanks for playing.
