kdaddy
Cavaliers Announce 2014 Program Concept & Repertoire http://www.cavaliers.org/news/cavaliers-announce-2014-design-team After months of conference calls and meetings, the team has narrowed in on the 2014 program concept and repertoire. Musical resources for the show will include compositions by Dmitri Shostakovich, Camille Saint-Saëns, Gustav Mahler, Henry Purcell, and an exciting contemporary work by Stephen Melillo, titled 'A Walk on the Water.' Initial reaction: fantastical!
Slingerland
According to CorpsReps, only one Purcell work has been performed by a corps before: the "Rondeau" from Abdelazar (also known as The Moor's Revenge) by Oregon in 2012. The same piece is the basis for Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, so elements of Purcell's work has been heard, though indirectly. Who knows what the Cavaliers arrangements will end up being, but at least the source material is a huge step up from the last couple of years. Shall we guess which Purcell work the Cavaliers are considering? "When I Am Laid in Earth" from Dido and Aeneas? The opening march from Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary? Something from King Arthur or The Indian Queen? I'm getting an elemental vibe, so maybe "When I Am Laid in Earth" to go along with "A Walk on the Water". So we still need fire and air... Maybe some "Carnival of the Animals" or "The Swan" ( Air), "The Bolt" (Fire), Mahler Symphonie No. 5? I'm just guessing of course.

D'oh. I should have remembered that. Thanks. The YPG gets some attention in an entertaining film from last year, Moonrise Kingdom, along with another Britten piece, Noye's Fludde. Seriously, all of the music from Moonrise Kingdom itself could make an excellent show. http://www.what-song.com/Movies/Soundtrack/1021/Moonrise-Kingdom And it's a PHENOMENAL film to boot.

Coincidentally, yesterday marked not only 50 years since the deaths of John F. Kennedy, Aldous Huxley, and C.S. Lewis, but 100 years since Britten's birth. fsubone
Will be interesting to see Cavalier's take on Mahler. His music is not something that's easy to put on the field, since it's so slow moving and slow developing. I wish them the best of luck with it, maybe it's a sign of a change in show design for them? jjeffeory
I wonder what this means. I think that was the intention. I'm curious too, but I can wait to try and guess at this later. Blue Stars and Colt both played this music recently. Edited December 3, 2013 by jjeffeory
