chris ncsu
We'll see how they're finally integrated into the show. I know we're all excited for the inevitable changes that are coming to the show. I don't think anyone was hoping for 3 or 4 less-than-subtle 20 yard tarps that appear to be random individuals meant to remind us that we're all Americans because we may have forgotten at some point during the show. The very idea seems pandering to me, so yes.... For the sake of Cadets' continued success, I hope the judges are more objective than I am in finding the merit of these things. God, Chad, all you Cadets fans care about is scores scores scores!
2000Cadet
Very true. I still say "no". I feel there's enough Americana already in the show. This just seems brow-beating to me. Almost like in 2011 when the field vomited "white" all over the place in the closer... just to make sure we knew the angels won. That part I actually liked. Looked like the angels were going into "heaven" I guess.
chaddyt
That part I actually liked. Looked like the angels were going into "heaven" I guess. I liked it too (although the t-flags seemed "stiff" and cheap to me). And I may end up liking these giant faces if Irving's objectivity rubs off on me. I just have to wonder if "subtle" is in the Cadets' design team's vocabulary sometimes.
skevinp
That part I actually liked. Looked like the angels were going into "heaven" I guess. That never even occurred to me. I always thought it would have looked better with some color or design. I now realize I was having impure thoughts. :D
George Dixon
The tarps from 2011 were awesome... I'm hoping these tarps are a bad joke. Ick. Edited July 25, 2014 by George Dixon
zigzigZAG
Tarps with background flags? I stated last week that any additions should not amp up the patriotism theme, and just add demand, particularly drill. I said if they add any more patriotism, it'd go overboard and be groveling for GE, which would implode the show. Refresh my memory: have the Cadets, or any corps, ever won gold with a patriotic-themed show? If not, why turn things up to 11 with the flags, tarps, etc.? "What we do, if we need that extra push over the cliff, we go one louder and turn it to eleven!" - Nigel Tufnel We've jumped the shark. We've gone from tasteful, to propaganda, straight into kitsch. Message to Hop - next time I hear that the cadets are doing a patriotic show, I tune out for that season. Get a new schtick, Hop. Enough retread Copland, enough retread Cadets drill moves, enough american flags, enough pseudo-militarism, enough narration. Haven't you learned that when the Cadets are truest to their tradition, they're innovating with new music, abstract concepts, and true art? 2005 - new ground entirely. 2011- beautiful, abstract design and a piece unplayed in DCI history. Learn, George. Get those tarps off the field before they embarrass the corps in a real show. There's still time to correct mistakes. Add some great Cadets whiplash drill, do something hard, reach for the envelope, try UNDERSTATEMENT with anything patriotic. Please. If they go this direction with the tarps and yet more tasteless patriotism and artless, cringing gestures, I'm pulling for Bluecoats. They're just trying to do art, not pander to provincialist patriotism and shove ideology down people's throats.

brichtimp
It would appear that what the Cadets have now may be strong enough for a medal. The suspense is about whether they can climb to the top with any changes coupled to clean execution.

They were 1 spot away from winning with a patriotic show in 1995, and fell to 3rd at the last minute with one in 2002. Star had it wrapped up in 1992 with a patriotic show, but fell to 3rd championships week (or roundabouts). Pseudo-militarism? I swear zig, are you in a permanent state of hyperventilation? jjeffeory
GE - that's all it is. Nothing wrong with adding some extra moments to the show my guess is they won't be there until certain parts (or the end) of the show Clutter. Not to pick on Cadets specifically, but there's a point where adding more clutter detracts from the show. So if that's how GE is added, then adding too many moments to the show should take away GE, Edited July 25, 2014 by jjeffeory
