zigzigZAG
Star of Indiana 1991 vs anyone in this field (2014) would WIN! Cadets and Star in 1993 (both unreal shows with amazing demand) would not beat BD this year (maybe not even Cadets). Reason: just not clean enough. If you watch those finals from 1993, and I realize it rained and that hurt a lot of things, Star and Cadets did not lay down clean shows at all. In terms of demand those are two of the best from any year (right there with Cadets 92 & 97, Crown 2012-2013, and BD on a number of years). By today's judging standards (or tendencies) Cadets and Star might take 3rd and 4th. And for the record I thought Star should have won those finals. Both corps were amazing, but Star was truly unique and special. Blue Devils 1986 vs Blue Devils 2014 = who's judging? If judged by 1986 standards, BD 1986 wins, but by today's standards 2014 BD wins. However, 1986 BD would be top 6 this year, maybe higher. Garfield Cadets 1987 vs. The Cadets 2014 = Dogfight...but Garfield 1987 might actually WIN DCI even here in 2014, even by today's judging standards. That was a supreme show and my No. 1 ALL-TIME Quintessential Drum Corps show EVER!!! While many earlier shows would score high points in some captions (GE, Vis Perf., Vis Ens., Mus. Ens, maybe Brass)..... I believe Colorguard and Percussion have made such huge advances in just the past decade... the older shows would have a rough time competing. The amount of simultaneous demand from these groups are through the roof these days compared to the past. However, If you are asking technically 5+ years back, then I would say Cadets 2005 would be the only show that could still win today. I believe that is the only show in the past 20 years (maybe ever) to be a unanimous champion (Every judge had them first). The design has enough depth and the performance was clean enough that any other show would have a rough time outscoring it in my opinion. Edit: Yep... just checked fromthepressbox. Cadets 2005 is the only show in the DCI era to be a unanimous winner at finals. Cavaliers 2002 and Blue Devils 2003 were close (both lost only percussion to Cadets)... other close calls were also all from Blue Devils (1976, 1997 and 2010). Cadets 2005 was a monster corps, freakishly skilled in all captions, and the audience fav that year, so they'd likely win today. That show holds up more than the Cavies championship shows in the previous years. But, while I too hold '87 Cadets as the transcendently beautiful paragon of achievement in DCI, there's no way, absolutely no way, that it would win today. In 2014 the '87 Cadets show would struggle for top 5. Star '91 also would not win. Just not enough going on. Not enough demand out of the guard. Less skill all around. (Do you remember the discussion about 3rd sops from Cadets still learning how to play trumpet, writing in fingerings for spring camps? They put it together, but c'mon, such a rudimentary learning level simply doesn't exist in todays top corps.)

Huh, I had always heard, read, and seen that Phantom Regiment's Rhapsody was the fan favorite.
whitedawn
Cadets 98 is the only champion from "back then" that is clean enough to contend in this era, but for some reason that I don't really understand, it would probably not score as highly because there was no "theme." I think the lowest scoring champion from that era would be Phantom 96.
HockeyDad
How would '89 SCV fare? Highest score ever (98.8) until Cavies and Cadets popped 99.15 in the 2000's. The show had a theme so it would fit today.

The show had a theme so it would fit today. I think that it would hold up well, but probably wouldn't be able to match the intensity of the top corps. I'd say it would be likely to place in the 6-3 range.
scvanguard
I would love to have a time machine and take 2014 Crown back to say 1974 and perform in exhibition at a show.... and not watch the show....but watch the crowd. Some people would have this look of total awe as in "OMG, that is unbelievable" and some would have this look of "WTF?"...... Would be interesting to say the least....

IMO, the audience would not be able to pay attention to the show, because they wouldn't be able to look beyond the pants they were wearing. IllianaLancerContra
Corps from about 2003 and earlier would not score well today. Corps from today would not score well if they were somehow teleported back to the 70's or 80's (well they would ALL be DQ'd, but even without that taken into account they would not score well).

I've had this dream quite often. Cadets, Blue Devils and Cavaliers are on their way to DCI East. They get caught in a bad thunderstorm and are transported to Allentown 1980! Brand new busses and semi Trucks pull on to Hamilton Street. People look in wonder. But, The cool thing about this recurring dream is 1980 Cadets, BD and Cavies are transported to 2013! I could tell you more but it would take a couple of pages!
