C.Holland
I think the concern is that all this is attached to a state institution. for some reason, im not sure why, we expect better of something associated with being a state mandated operation. DrumManTx
The fact that it is a school, parents were complaining, and he did nothing about it is disgusting. Have fun recruiting for that program now.
bstar82
Comparing to drum corps, Porn? still happens. These are what kids think about. Changing on busses? Of course. Nicknames? still happens, but maybe not at the level described in the report. If I recall correctly, Cavaliers pretty much had a nickname for everybody bitd. Whether they were obscene, depends on who you talked to. Underwear run thrus? Absolutely at one time, but DCI is frowning on some of the skimpy clothing worn on tour at school sites. A big reason DCI is having housing issues from year to year. It upsets the local folks quite a bit. Then again, OSU is a institution of higher learning, so what happens there will be more in the public eye than maybe what drum corps members might attempt on a random day. brichtimp
If those Ohio State kids had that much extra energy to spend on some of the ######## crap I read in the report, then maybe they needed more focus on rehearsal to clean up more of their musical and visual dirt, IMHO. dapperpoet
I can't, of course, speak to anything going on in the OSU band in 2014. What I can say is, when I marched at Indiana we met up with the Buckeyes in Chicago in 1980- both bands were staying downtown (we were at the Drake, they were somewhere close by). They were coming back from Madison and we had just marched at Northwestern. We ran into some of them at a restaurant and they had wet hair. We asked them what was going on and they said that it was part of the hazing process- they had ketchup and mustard and chocolate syrup poured in their hair and had been forced to ride in the bathrooms of the coaches from Columbus to Madison because they were freshmen. I was appalled, at Indiana, people went out of their way to help you- we wanted everyone to make the band and have a good time. On visits to Columbus to march, we found a very anti-woman vibe. They were demonstrably proud to have kept women out of their band for as long as they did, and they let it be known that if they could "drive out the b####es" (their words) they would. So no, this news surprises me not at all. Edited July 25, 2014 by dapperpoet
dapperpoet
im certain this is some sort of hazing in every ensemble be it college or drum corps. I know that we had skits to perform as freshmen where i went to college. There was some off color commentary made, but nothing was forced or mandatory. And any commentary was at our own discretion. again, we werent forced to say or do anything. there was no "you have to do this" crap being fed to us. I had similar experiences in every corps i marched. Again, nothing was ever forced or made to be mandatory for acceptance. But there's a point where stuff goes to far. I will say that college kids marching in underwear at their own discretion, and not being forced to do it (meaning this was not mandatory for acceptance by any means) is one thing. But when a staff member is standing there, that becomes an automatic dismissal in my book for the staff. If the staff didn't take notice of students and put their best interest first, then there's something wrong. If something is brought up to the staff about being uncomfortable, and the staff does nothing, then again, there needs to be a step in by the university. No, it's not true. I marched four years for Ray Cramer at Indiana and nothing like this ever happened. It wouldn't have been tolerated for a second.

Visual and musical cleanliness is not necessary when they (to the OSU Fight Song) "Fight the team across the field, show them Ohio's here. Why don't we set the Earth reverberating with our mighty cheer: "C'mon Ohio!" Hit them hard and see how they fall, never let that team get the ball. Hail! Hail! The gang's all here And we'll win that ol' conference now!" (Yes, I'm a TBDBITL vet, so I can pick on them.)
skevinp
Yeah, sexual harassment is cool as long as the nicknames are funny. Fair enough. I certainly never meant to imply that, but have edited my post lest anyone misunderstand.
luv4corps
I have mixed feelings about this story, and I'm a woman. I am all for long standing traditions that promote unification and camaraderie. But so many times, what is "camaraderie" for some is a nightmare for others, and that's where this all gets sticky.
