THeShadeOfNight
Still not sold on Pitts. Emmert had no chance coming in. Plus, from his previous comments, I'm surprised he's there at all. That would require them to want to work with the admin and who wants to do that?!? I remember thinking the whole time "if they can keep this guy for 10-15 years he is going to grow and be a PHANTASTIC arranger." Very strong first outing and I am sure it will only get better. That feature with the four podiums? Those licks were far from easy and those kids nailed it.

henry7184
There should be a type of ban on this site for him in topics about Phantom or when he talks about Phantom. And people wonder why we get a bad rep on here. I won't pretend to be in the know or anything, but he's not the first person I've heard say things like this. I just don't understand how anyone could look at the product on the field this year and not think there is a huge problem in Rockford. While I was watching Regiment rehearse in San Jose last year, Dan commented to the corps about the lack of applause during the ballad the night before. My first thought was, "it's not their fault, it's just not very well written." That being said, I felt the music last year sort of compensated for the visual deficiencies. and I actually enjoyed their show very much last year. I listen to it all the time. IMO, I just see the whole show this year (maybe save the second ballad) as I saw the ballad last year, just blah. As a Regiment fan, it's pretty disappointing. It's interesting - I found the drill and flag work to be the stronger aspects of the 2015 show. One or two people pointed on in PM that they had heard that a different drill designer - a person known in WGI circles, perhaps somewhat known in band circles, and unknown in DCI as far as I know - would be joining Regiment for 2016. It would seem that ultimately didn't work out? Was there indeed a different designer planned, but then Emmert was a fallback?
littlejaw
That's not what I'm saying. I didn't like the show, but I think it would be incredibly naive of me to come on here and lambast the organization for a show that isn't complete yet. If that's the level of design they gave us on finals night then I certainly would hope they make changes organizationally. BUT it's the first show. Good luck to Phantom. Do some rewrites and get this ship back on track, no one wants to see you falter.

I'm not sugar coating it in my review, but I do say what I did like, hope they develop the hell out of it, and improve. I didn't like it, but same. I'm not going to make it personal. It's hard to tell, at this point, whether it's better than last year, or not. Musically, I definitely do not think it is as strong as last year. It sounded like vintage PR during the 'opener'. He also wrote parts to let the middle horns shine and they are killing it. The solos are lovely as well. Last year's book was just too easy for them imho. Listen again.
