Those who are not needs to be exposed and cut from the activity. But see, that’s the problem. We don’t know what we don’t know. If you asked me a month ago, “What do I think of SoA?” I would have said, “I was really impressed with Bottle Tree and I’m excited to see if they can build on that. I think they can make a push into Finals this year.” Who’s the next SoA? Your guess is as good as mine … but I am sure there will be another. There have been so many corps that have screwed the pouch, you might think that we at DCP would collectively say, “I never would have thought that corps X had so many institutional issues. I can hardly believe it.” Except too many of us have seen so much serious #### in our marching years and since, that not much surprises us anymore. That was a different kind of kid back then. Not band kids. I was one of the first band kids in Norwood Park. Hardly any of them could read a note of music. I had one fellow French horn player tell me years later that he couldn’t figure out why I was there. It was because I want to be in a drum corps. Things were different but it kept the bulk of kids out of trouble. Now, they have the crème de la crème of the pageantry world with far more creature comforts on the road than we ever had and equally awful #### is happening. Explain that one to me. The "why" is always the question. When I marched, I wanted to 1) be the best performer I could be 2) make my parents proud of the investment that had made in my music education and 3) be a part of something bigger than myself. The ideas of push through, never quit, family over self....those things were part of drum corps. Luckily, nothing ever made me question those things. Apparently I got lucky.....and probably a lot of us did/do. But all it takes is one narcissist to turn that passion into something they can use to their advantage. We say we are better off these days. I would say that is true but MOSTLY because with social media, it's harder to keep things under wraps. One post can be seen by millions. So the bad players have to be more careful. There are not less of them....they're just more careful is all. My 2 cents

Still trying to figure out DCIs actions on “policies and procedures” on abuse. Sounds like they have something written down but the corps (especially the members) don’t know wth it is. How can anything be done if the potential victims are clueless on what is wrong and how to report it up the chain. “Here’s a number to call” and nothing else is useless Edited January 18, 2022 by JimF-LowBari
craiga
Why do some folks on here assume that individual corps DON'T have written sexual harassment policies and procedures, along with reporting processes, specific people to whom to report, and sexual harassment training for all members and staff? Look, the SOA situation is horrendous and seems to become more grotesque by the day, but is it fair to paint everyone with the same broad brush?
waliman4444
After Terri's review of " CHEER" I watched season 2 episode 1 where one of the STARS of the documentary was arrested for child pornography..There was no further mention of this incident in this episode: It felt like " lets get through this quickly so that we can focus again on cheering"...And this is apparently the creme de la creme of cheering squads..Again, the paralells between drum corps and cheering at that level, makes you want to be even more dilligent when considering the environment you want your child to march in..As one Texan parent said" Winning is everything"..My retort: But at what cost?

It wasn't mentioned further in that episode because that episode only covered the beginning of the system. They addressed it out front and then in the timeline of the season, the issues come to light in episode 5.
