Oh this is a novel argument! You're right! All Crown plays is B-flat major chords, right? Oh, wait, wrong. What about the A minor chord hit in the opener in 2009? Or the E-flat major suspension chord in the 2009 closer? Or F minor v chord in the Khachaturian opener in 2010? Or, the B-flat mm 7 chords in the Mahler, or the F mm 7 chords as well in the Mahler? Or what about the e-flat major hit in 2011? OR the A open-fifth chord in paint it black in 2011? Or the D minor chord that ends paint it black? Ah, you MUST be talking about the D-flat major hit in Clair de Lune in 2008! Oh, thats right! Crown isn't the only drum corps that plays B-flat major chords. How about actually knowing what chords corps play instead of assuming that because Crown often ends on B-flat major (which almost ALL drum corps do, frequently), that those are the only chords they play.

Crown will play the same chords as last year.. which are the same ones as the year before...and the year before.. but those chords will cause high schoolers to wet themselves. BD will have the best feet do to the extension of their skirt to a dress that is all 360 degrees around their feet. some people will bloo the bluecoats some people will boo the bluecoats some people will ask why people are booing the bluecoats. Cavaliers will be all guys, very crowd friendly, but no one will really get their show. Cadets feet will be better than last year. Because dirtier is impossible. But this year, the show writing won't make up for it.

Don't dish it out if you can't take it. And maybe I'm just a little sensitive cause I think that what Klesch and Crown do is the best there is, at least brass wise.

Shouldn't they be interchangeable? I know plenty of people who still use those terms. Trumpets are the soprano voice of the brass family. Neither a change of key or the addition of valves changes that fact.

Good point, Mike. Also: The junior corps where I marched... Sacred Heart Crusaders of Manville, NJ... is on this "casualties" list. Except the corps was not a casualty of DCI. The corps was never affiliated with DCI, nor did it ever compete at a DCI championship event. DCI had nothing to do with the corps' demise after the 1980 season. Did a number of corps overextend themselves trying to keep up with the "big guns" in DCI? Absolutely. But a bunch of corps on this list were never DCI corps, per se.

Question for the OP, what were the DCI related reasons Westshore Cadets folded? Wanna see if it matches with what the people who were there say. Or is this throwing 10 lbs of crap at the wall and see if any sticks to "prove" a point.

While I agree with most of this post. Crown does NOT play the same chords. They just sound amazing playing all of them. And Cadets did get a gift last year. Their book did make up for the dirt.

I am offended by "the list" or the insinuation that this is DCI's fault. 99.9999% of those corps folded because of several reasons: 1) lack of interest by members - who moved on to other activities 2) lack of interest by members - who were more ambitious and moved to more competitive corps 3) lack of interest by parents - as their own kids lost interest 4) lack of interest by church or other sponsoring groups (AL, VFW, etc) 5) lack of funds - less parents being forced to raise more funds to dwindling membership 6) lack of vision by remaining management to seek other funding sources 7) corps went by the wayside when they refused to offer some touring opportunities - to keep pace with other local units 8) failure by all involved to realize the energy it takes to simply co-exist with other youth activities Fill in the percentages to the above.....or add other reasons why corps have disappeared. On the flip side, would there be any corps remaining, or would the junior corps activity have survived, if 13 leaders did not take the initiative to control its own destiny?

Interesting that you saw and heard "all" of the corps on the list (over 1000 of them) to be able to make such an authoritative evaluation concerning the quality of their horn lines and whittle it down to nine corps. You, sir, must be quite old and the greatest expert who has ever graced this earth. We all bow down to you as the wise sage on the pinnacle that you sit upon.

I can definitely say that the visual rehearsals I have gone through have affected how I prepare papers, emails, responses etc. The attention to detail in vis is exactly what one needs to make sure an argument is well-founded, sourced, elegant and efficient. Essentially, get to the point, cut your excuses and execute. Oh, and I'm really good at moving couches. Backwards technique FTW.

The 1988 Blue Devils' show is perhaps one of the most timeless masterpieces I've witnessed on the field. It defies carbon dating.

Share how you've used your DCI background in everyday playing and performance experiences, both music and non-music related. Mine: I have always loved gridding flam paradiddles. They still are my favorite way to warm-up, from hotel lobby steel drum gigs to stages as large as New York City's Radio City Music Hall and the Russian Kremlin. My arranging and composing endeavors in the marching arts have guided the path to directing and leading bands from Vegas to Europe. Those experiences have definitely shaped me as a musician and performer.

Yeah...this is close to the time of the season where I weigh in with my thoughts on this whole 'secrecy thing'. Not a fan of it...mainly because I don't see the benefit for keeping a show a secret. I 'can' and 'have' seen benefits related to releasing information (vid, audio..etc) of a corps upcoming show to build interest and excitement. What's even funnier are the people who hear and see corps in the off season and don't pass along what they have seen and heard. Let me tell ya..if I heard music and/or obtained information about a corps show...I wouldn't hesitate for a second to pass along what I saw and heard.....unless the staff/management specifically asked everyone with in earshot to keep things quiet. What other activity does this? Movie info is leaked, bands albums are leaked, video game clips are leaked....why should drum corps be any different? Its news...and people love news. Even if the news changes. It keeps interest. Its a way to keep fans 'engaged' in the off season(Remember this idea...engaging fans). Just proves how the activity doesn't have a good grasp on promoting their brand. Generic camp audio/video doesn't cut it....they all look and sound the same. Promote........get fans excited to the point they can't wait to get their hand on some show material. Perhaps make a few bucks in the off season selling audio/video clips....even if they are rough cuts. Sell them for $3.00 a piece...every bit ($) helps...right? See those fuel prices lately? Well..that's enough for my 2012 edition on this topic. In all honesty...it doesn't mean much to me anymore. Did bother me more in the past...not so much anymore. So...to a corps management and/or staff who deliberately keep things hush hush.... Why does your corps wait so long to release details about the coming seasons show?

An Eb Cornet is still part of the larger trumpet/soprano family though, along with the Bb, C, piccolo, and the many other variants on the instrument. In terms of this activity, the Bb trumpet is still the soprano voice, but it seems that there is a schism in terminology based solely on a change of key. I guess I just don't understand why some people are condescending of one term over another, when there is good reason for both of them.

Never. But, those would be ridiculously hard to tune. I think he's just talking about the last Bb chord they usually play for around a minute. Thank you! I'm glad someone else saw that.

I realize there are many other keys in shows, there would be no way to modulate or make anything interesting otherwise. You missed a couple in your rant. I was just clarifying for previous posters about the chord they used at the end of the show for four years, the sustained Bb major (which I realize other corps do- but not the same way). I'm sorry, but that wasn't cool. I know what I'm talking about. I know every chord tone I played in the years that I marched. I know every chord tone everyone ELSE had in the years that I marched.
