  2. Probably something about men and women being on the floor together. if they get too close, they might hold hands. And holding hands leads to pregnancy. It happens.

  4. Well, thanks for calling me out. Didn't see Dartmouth's show, but I've heard it was a comedy routine mostly. So no, probably wouldn't have been out of the question. I can appreciate comedy. But thanks for putting words in my mouth and trying to call me out, really thank you.

  5. accountability for judges is at an all time high actually. with digital recording being done, now caption heads can go in and listen to recordings any time they want to be sure judges aren't saying anything dumb, or putting out a number that doesnt match the commentary. In the old days...please. it was such a good old boy network that people who were horrible got gigs year after year just because of who their buddies were. and yes, if you read carefully, it was addresses where the guitar player could be adjudicated. You just don't like the answer.

  6. An old school, old 1970's guard girl perspective... In middle school we watched Sound of Music and West Side Story during music class. In high school we went on field trips to the theatre, ballet, opera, Gypsy Rose Lee, Swan Lake, Boris Gudunov. In high school I performed in Annie Oakley (a cast member), The Music Man (a town gossip), Our Town (6 characters) and Sweet Charity (the lead character; do you wanna dance?) In University I was makeup for 'Oh What a Lovely War', strike up/strike down set for 'Happy Birthday Wanda June', directed 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', watched a performance from a student of Andre Segovia and paid a monthly $5 student price to listen to Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. We went to movies like The Exorcist, Rocky Horror Picture Show, A Clockwork Orange...during university film appreciation course we explored and critiqued Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Alfred Hitchcock and Fellini. Much of the above may have been performed by WGI and/or DCI which is why I like winterguard and drum corps. Conversely, I now know Einstein on the Beach as we attended 2013 drum corps finals and from viewing WGI Fan Network. Same music. Different interpretation. Most of the above were controversial in their time and some remain timeless. To each their own. To Stu. I'm sorry I was Sweet Charity but the audience liked the show lots. The show must go on

  7. Same could have been said about the decline from 75-85, when 50% of active corps folded. Glory days indeed. DCI has continued on though, even with the less number of corps. The ones that are still around do seem to be on stronger financial footing than most used to be BITD

  8. This is just flat out misinformation. Completely utterly false. There's a clear pattern developing with this users's posts. Not gonna go any further than that. But its bloody obvious why he keeps seeing things that no one else seems to see. FWIW most guards I see (both locally, WGI, and youtube) seem to be very sensitive to the performers wearing their uniforms. Sure there are a few idiots who ignore their kids (and their body types) and put them into less than flattering uniforms but the vast, vast majority of instructors are very aware of what they put on their kids. As for dance, my guess is that ballet -- any ballet -- is overtly sexual to the poster in question. In fact the vast, vast majority of guard shows don't contain sexual innuendo at all. Few designers go any where NEAR that sort of dance or programming. Why? Because most guards are scholastic; the performers have parents; the parents go to the shows. And most parents are more than willing to go complain to a school administrator about what Johnny or Suzie are being asked to do.

  9. I take it as you don't want to judge the ensemble sound on the field, you want to judge the individual players, while leaving the ensemble judging (including balance and blend) to the Analysis and Music GE judges (Music GE, because a show with awful balance will be significantly less effective than one with good balance, likely).

  10. Heh, had to laugh at all this announcement stuff. Sure got the discussion going, didn't it?

  12. True, that answer was a "hot mess" - but there was one thing clear about it. Nowhere was the word "performance" mentioned. Apparently, the guitar is judged for effect, but not necessarily evaluated for performance. I wonder how many other electronic devices exploit this loophole.

  13. I guess you would not want to see a HS musical produce versions of "Cabaret", "Sweet Charity" or "Gypsy" either, and we'll have to change the name of one show to "Darn Yankees".

  14. I think far more know what WGI is. I'll grant you attendance may not be as high, but name recoginition is there. WGI is what....36 or so years old now? I'm huessing more people going to DCI shows know about WGI than they do DCA

  16. And drum corps. Madison did Carmen in 2005, SCV did it in 1990. Porgy and Bess has been pretty well covered by Spirit. Miss Saigon was SCV 1991.

  17. Ever watch much opera? Talk about some crazy stuff that would be considered pretty controversial in our circles. Yet I don't see you railing against them and judging those who enjoy it. I mean Carmen is about a hooker. Porgy and Bess? Miss Saigon(musical I know, based somewhat on an opera).

  19. In that case, get in line with the thousands upon thousands of others over the years who think corps x didn't deserve their score. :)

  20. i'm not mad. trust me, if I was, you'd know LOL. I'm just saying while DCI gives us some, to some that's never enough. Maybe they have valid reasons, maybe they don't. In terms of explaining the process, hands down WGI Percussion leads the way. DCI has made some attempts at pulling back the curtain, and that's a good thing. Could they do more? Sure. Will they? Dunno, I'm sure they have their reasons.

  22. well if DCI angers you so, there's always DCA. who puts out far less material about the behind the scenes stuff than DCI does.

  26. 2011 Cadets. Half the corps was off for most of the show. Came in at the wrong time. Couldn't lay their instruments in a straight line. Didn't even wear the correct uniforms.

  28. We are very proud to announce that we have passed our DCA evaluation. I couldn't be more proud of this group of people. See you on the 50! I'll have a March camp report before the end of the week. Thanks for all those who have been supporting us along the way. Larry
