  1. I dunno now. I'm not so sure you can count on BD being in the top 5 this year. Something or other to do with having family day in a ghetto and humidity. You know Karma and what not.

  3. i see nothing wrong with wearing the CWP jacket. where you march in the winter really has no bearing on your corps in the summer. it's a different world. geography plays a far greater role in the choice of winter programs for most performers. (and anyone affiliated with CWP can and should be #### prould of their accomplishments in their 1st two years. what they've done is pretty much unparalleled in WGI )

  4. "Magic in the 1960's": 1963 was our very first year in completion (Ct Royal Lancers). What was possibly our first "Exposure" to 'World Class' junior and senior drum corps was at the Dream Contest. We were the "Intermission" corps between the shows. Can you imagine a "First Year" M&M corps at the DREAM, bookended by St Kevin's Emerald Knights and the New York Skyliners. Many weak knees in those blue Bermudas...... Mine included. Over to you Mr Lisko..... Elphaba WWW

  5. Re-post! I’m conducting research on drum corps archives and the different types of materials that are collected. I’d like to hear from you about your corps’ archival materials and how they are being collected and stored. I’m collecting this data in the hopes that the professional archives community can help provide some guidelines and best practices to both corps and private collectors in terms of their archival collections. The data collected will shed some light on what materials are being collected and how they are being stored and preserved so that past, present and future performers and fans can enjoy and learn about the drum corps activity. The survey should only take a few minutes, and your responses are completely anonymous. Please take the survey one time only! Responses will be collected until the survey is closed on July 1, 2015. Questions marked with an asterisk (*) are required. Survey data will be collected online at this link: http://goo.gl/forms/VtOKYUcO7z If you have any questions about the survey, please email me at gjchaf2@uky.edu I really appreciate your input!

  6. Both Sides Now was done by L.I. Kingsmen in '71 and Crossmen in '04; very different but wonderfully musical arrangements each. I look forward to hearing this version and hope it is as light and lyrical as the two predecessors. Great mellophone solo in the first.

  7. She is a age-out from Cadets guard '13 who was a CG tech with the corps for 2014, offered some very constructive suggestions during Spring training, was given more responsibility and chaired the direction of the Cadets (training) Winter Guard this past season.http://yea.org/programs/cadets/cadets/staff No strong corps in any caption has only one talented person/designer for that caption lest an injury, death or other circumstance handicap the corps/section. Zingali had several of the current known names as his techs back in the the day and were often heard "discussing" design points with the likes of them such as Sylvester, May, Sacktig, and Vanderkopff for instance. Percussion caption in most corps works similarly publicly. Brass, maybe not as publicly, BD probably the most public of them all brass wise that suggestions come from several notables.

  9. Kind of like the opening flag feature the Cadets had last year. It was clean, pleasing and well appreciated.

  11. There is I think BUT just in part. There is so much more criteria today and the activity has demanded way more than what we used to do in way of presenting a program. For me when i see those glimpses of a flag block , a rifle slap etc etc , today it makes it more exciting because it isn't the norm anymore . so a strategic placement of work like you are talking about, I think can come off well and be successful.

  12. Fairy tales may come true, it can happen to you... Impossible to predict something that you haven't seen. Until the performance product is on the field, I'll say the top 5 will be the same - Blue Devils, Bluecoats, Cadets, SCV, Crown. The title contenders this year will be the 5, with strongest bets to BD, 'Coats, Crown, Cadets. Then it's Cavies, PR, Boston, Blue Knights, Madison, Blue Stars in the next grouping. The remaining finalist spot will be an interesting battle between Spirit, Colts, Crossmen, Troopers. Add in a dark horse in OC, and we'll be in for treat this year for sure. It's a lot a talented groups and not enough finalist spots to go around. Some very talented corps will be on the sidelines on Saturday night.

  14. Sadly, Loretto and The Queensmen? Think it was a contest in Union City, NJ. That field with the cement or brick wall around it? Not sure if Loretto was there that same night though. The LI senior corps most know. Was Sun the only LI senior corps? Were the Pequa Redmen a senior corps? As far as reaching a level where the big guns were, Long Island, Brooklyn, Queens and The Bronx had a large talent pool. The NY Kingsmen had people leaving already. The many JR. corps from the LI Circuit had talented people wanting to move up. I know we already had at least 5 Selden guys after a horrible 65 season and demise. Imagine, Queensmen and Selden in the same room? Scary! Slowly, folks showed up. 67 was OK, but we seemed destined to be a 4th or 5th place corps. I remember the 67 Barnum. Hot as hell. Afternoon, John had us doing company fronts down a slope next to a school somewhere. Simple company fronts. I look down the line and thought, man we suck. Come on guys, we got Hurcs, Sky, Reading and Rebs tonight! The evening played out as I thought. If only everyone worked and thought we could do it. After the 67 season, many things changed. People started believing we could do it. Things looked up and people started showing up. Talented guys. Some had to wait for a spot. Think we had more DMs than 1st. Sops. Even Walter Bunce, Bobs brother. People that wanted to work with a goal in mind. All on the same page. I wasn't there to see how the late 70's corps came to rise, but something tells me many of the above tools came into play. Maybe different people, but all on the same page. Imagine that.

  15. Good question, Fran. Most of us were destined for the Skyliners (myself included), but after Billy and John began teaching the Sunrisers, it was obvious where we would land. As for the original photo, it shows retreat at the Mosque Theatre Show in '62. There was an un-expected winner that night. I'll see Billy Cobham tonight after his show at Yoshi's jazz club in Oakland and have him view this. He'll be able to ID these folks by name. After all, he was there that night, in uniform.

  16. The show is dark, but I wouldn't say overly dark. I think they're doing a great job of making the music accessible (at least from what we heard) to drum corps audiences. They're still figuring out the intro, and there was some "chanting" that was introduced at this past weekend's camp. Going back and looking at my video, the drumline should be improved. And the horns will be solid as well. This show is going to take a little getting used to, but I get the feeling its going to be the start of a new chapter for the corps. I did get the feeling that this group might be a little younger than past groups, especially in the battery and low brass, but not in a bad way.

  17. That one is easy. The Sunrisers!!! The Sasso brothers... Bill Hightower... Bill Cobham... Frank Dorritie... among others. Without that influx of talent... and the "second talent wave" in 1966 of the Carver Gay Blades folks... Gene Bennett, Uncle Nick and others... I wonder if the Sunrisers ever would have risen to the level of championship contenders in the 1960s, and beyond.

  18. Nope. Fundamentals are far more skill-oriented than they were back in the day, and are taught, learned, and applied in such a way that today's weapon lines are able to attempt and achieve work several orders of magnitude beyond what was done back then. The weapon lines of today, were you to teach them the Manual of Arms, would learn, clean and master everything in it in an afternoon.
