  1. sometimes being right makes one an insufferable ######## to some. i've been an insufferable ######## on here before....because i was right. it's a cross to bear

  2. Shooting the messenger happens a lot in drum corps. Stuart Rice was sounding the alarm on you know who for twenty years and everybody said he was crazy. Which he may have been but he was right about that.

  4. I’m not agreeing it’s an ego or “cause” thing with him, as much as it is information he has put forth, that no one else would have. Had he not provided the detail and research, no one on here would have been aware of the depth of the issues and apparent illegalities that have been ongoing and unresolved for the past few years. SCV is rife with noncompliance with State of Cali requirements and follows it all up with a lack of openness and honesty when questioned. A sad state of affairs.

  6. The charity registry tool has hundreds of listings with the status REVOKED and about 100 total with the current status SUBJECT TO CEASE AND DESIST ORDER. Looks like the SUSPENDED status has hundreds of orgs listed as well. There is no way to organize them by time, but the registry was started in the early-mid 00s IIRC. I think lead time between nicey-nice notices and cease-and-desist is highly dependent on the org in question. The cease-and-desist notices are thorough legal documents so that makes sense.

  8. In my experience, when people don't like the content being discussed, but don't have an adequate rebuttal, it immediately becomes about the tone and the method of communication. After a number of decades trying to fit into a narrow definition of what is an "appropriate way" to communicate bad news, I decided that some people will never be happy with the messenger if the message is negative, no matter how they categorize their objection. So let the bad news fly I say. Bring the dark into the light and let's have honest discourse without pretense.

  10. Letters from the CA DOJ are matters of public record that can't be spun away. The organization's leadership (the BOD) is in over their heads when it comes to Business 101, and the record shows that it has been the case there for years. There's nothing to "blow out of the water", since the indictment of their mismanagement isn't a matter of opinion.

  12. the time to do that has IMO passed without it looking self serving or CYA. this info has been out there for a while now....it's no secret. and still if they actually say something it's full steam ahead everything is great or will be fixed.

  13. Heck, even She Who Must Never Be Named was making accusations on RAMD about member abuse that at the time was ignored, likely because of the messenger. I don’t recall details well enough to state, but I remember it happened. 😕

  16. Yeah, I had the same experience. My comment is more about the current staff, admin, and board. I'm happy you've seen signs of this returning, but it's been at least a decade since I've seen the same.

  19. we'll agree to disagree because, to be brutally honest, 99% of the leg work showing SCV's inability to manage their affairs has been show by Richard. maybe his style may turn some off.....don't shoot the messenger. and trust me, i can and have been an insufferable ######## on here over the years and probably will be again. My inability to shut my mouth has cost me gigs in the activity, and so be it. i have my integrity

  21. My guess is there will be a PR focused presentation with no real information, skirting around the actual issues, and presenting a rosy outlook without much content. Thinking Meryl Streep in "Don't Look Up". DCI doesn't have the regulatory power in the way that the CA DOJ does. They have no reason to be transparent unless they choose to, which I doubt they will.

  22. Nah. Your presentation needs work. Cut out most of the “I did this and I did that” stuff and it will come across so much better. Restate without the “I”. You unnecessarily shift the focus from where it should be (SCV) to yourself. You don’t want that, right? You can do it.
    2 points
  23. Nah. That’s not it at all. It’s in the presentation. One can make a point without saying “I” a nauseating number of times. You do it.

  24. My ego doesn't matter. My cause is irrelevant. There is nothing I nor anyone else can do to stem the tide SCV leadership has navigated towards. The CA DOJ is not considering my social media popularity.

  25. hey Westshore bough BD's uniforms after the 75 season and wore them til 78. first uniform to make DCA and DCI finals, and one member of Shore got to wear the same uniform she wore when she marched in BD

  27. So annual DCI meeting starts 4 January. No rules proposals this year? Do I recall correctly that rules proposals are an every other year thing? Seems like there will be a few other topics to discuss. One thing I hope is on agenda is a ‘plan B’ if LOS field replacement falls behind schedule & isn’t complete by August.

  31. look i'll say it and Richard can confirm....sometimes he's rubbed me the wrong way. but we communicate, and work through it. i'm not offended easily, but i do understand and appreciate sometimes how the message is conveyed can set people off, but in this case, honestly with Richard, it's all the message from the deniers and enablers that is what upsets people.

  33. US swim Olympic trials at LOS 15-23 June. Field ripped off & temporary pool(s) installed. After that new field installed. I know in NFL if for some reason stadium isn’t ready for a game then they typically play at other teams stadium. So DCI better have a plan. Better to plan & not need than vice versa. https://www.lucasoilstadium.com/event/2024-u-s-olympic-team-trials-swimming/

  36. Heard and respected. Alternatively, I learned humility from this corps. One of those crucial life lessons that should be codified into the heart of the mission-type things. And in many of my interactions with alum, I still see anywhere from hints of it to near total self-deprecating. It's certainly seems more hidden when I speak to alum in the orbit of the org, but it's not gone. Nick Danziger's election to the alumni association brings me renewed hope, for example. As long a there's still a hint, I'll be leveraging it to push for much needed improvements to safeguarding people, finances and organizational synchrony. I still think we all want the same thing, we're just still trying to emerge from the Dark Years.

  37. Which is why it would be so cool if Vanguard stepped ahead of the pack, ya know in an avant-garde way, and said here, we messed up, but we invite our constituents to provide feedback on our thorough, open-ended, living document plan that we're using to get back on track.* Spirit invited public feedback on their safeguarding procedures after their rewrite. It wouldn't even be the first time this org took big risks in hopes of high reward. This one should be a no-brainer comparatively IMHO. *this is normally what a nonprofit strategic plan or annual report does

  40. There have indeed been summary videos, for example, like when woodwinds were voted down. But discussions like the one concerning internal problems w/ individual Corps, or over multiple member-abuse lawsuits (in other words, cancers on the activity that, if they metastasize are an existential threat to DCI) are never made public. This is DCI’s definition of transparency.

  43. DCI Annual Meeting starts Thursday morning 01-04-24. SCV presentation will be the most anticipated event ever. Let's see what they have to say to the DCI Board and to the membership. All of the work Richard has done will get blown out of the water is my guess.

  45. Keeping this on topic: If we're looking at a possibility/probability of a financially-choked (or otherwise hindered) 2024 tour, then history has shown that it's members that get the brunt end of such challenges. Just like in 93. Just like 2003. Likely other years too. I hope the new safeguarding work pays off. The CEO alluded to caring about the safeguarding of current members and alum in our communications. Wish alum also took on that responsibility but perhaps they will start to now. That would be great. I very much long to experience that signature class within the Vanguard community again.

I have very much enjoyed playing and conducting several of Ron Nelson's excellent compositions for band and thought I would share the following. Here are several pieces by Ron Nelson that were performed by various drum corps. Take a moment to check some of them out on YouTube. Aspen Jubilee Rocky Point Holiday Sonoran Desert Holiday Passacaglia (Homage on B-A-C-H) Courtly Airs and Dances Epiphanies (Fanfares and Chorales) Medieval Suite Savannah River Holiday Lauds (Praise High Day) Morning Alleluias (for the Winter Solstice) Resonances I Te Deum Laudamus
