MADISON SCOUTS 2016

Recommended Posts

I believe that contending with those chairs in time and all that is pretty demanding.

I find the talent level comments that I've read from some people to be not so classy.

I appreciate your comments and find them much classier than other comments.

I'm not sure what was classless about my comment. This is a message board and I was being frank. I never invoked Academy's name in the discussion. I also don't think anyone can refute my statement that swapping BD and BS's shows wouldn't change their placements much because of the desparity of talent. That's just being logical.

Dear, I wasn't talking about you.

henry, thank you for your appreciation of PR this year but I take issue with your second sentence.

Prior to 2016, the Regiment had not performed Prelude for Piano, Chairman Dances, Ave Verum Corpus, I'm Dreaming of Home or YPGO. The percussion feature is an original composition by Mssr. Kuhn and Ferguson.

Aside from TCD and YPGO, none of the repertoire performed in 2016 has been performed in the past 60 years by any corps. So. perhaps a fresh approach has begun.

That's fair. I knew that when I wrote it. I did not like Regiment's show in June, but I am liking it more and more. What I really mean, is Regiment and Scouts are suffering from the same complex - not evolving. Although most of Regiment's music hasn't been played before, the show is still old school. It's still a show that doesn't play well to the sheets. That being said, at this point in the season, I only like Madison, SCV, Regiment and BK. Even with all the problems I see in Madison's show, it's still highly entertaining - same with Regiment. It's a toss up really. I feel like we are losing entertainment because more and more corps are playing to the stupid sheets. I just don't want to see two corps I love (Regiment and Scouts) continue to fall.

Ah, ok. I read all the replies and hadn't seen many comments referencing talent, so I just assumed I was the object in question. Ha

The best thing anyone can do right now, if you're worried about Madison (or any other corps you might be worried about, but this is the Madison thread...) is to give them money at drumcorpschallenge.com. Historically, Madison receives less in donations than almost all top twelve corps. Chris Komnick and his crew are wizards at stretching their dollars, but more financial resources would help them tremendously.

Scouts have been operating on a shoestring for many years...During a good portion of that time period they were consistently in the top 6. I'm not suggesting the Association couldn't use a lot more money...But they ended up in 8th last year with what I understand to be a very similar economic picture. Are you suggesting as are some currently doing within the Scouts organization that their downturn this year is tied to their economics? If so, than you're simply yelling, SQUIRREL!

Here's the thing. Watch both shows. Academy plays that show beautifully. Its clean, its straight to the point, its fun to watch, and its not very deep. Its cute. And its done. Judas is not a cute show. It still needs some fixes. Changes were made this week. While Academy and Xmen are cleaning and refining, the guys are changing. Once they get all the changes in, and add the extra chachki stuff, it'll be fine. Then they need to clean. But there's no reason to go jumping out of windows.

No window jumping here...As in Dragnet, "just reporting the facts sir". Realistically though, you should know that this is a different game today...everyone's tweaking and cleaning like chickens with their heads cut off with only a couple weeks left. It's so incredibly difficult to leap frog on the home stretch with so little time remaining. At this point, I would say that it will be next to impossible for Scouts to rise higher than 11th, and they may have an equal chance of dropping below 12th.

I stand by my statement from earlier in the thread that I think it's a talent issue more than a design issue. I just don't think they're drawing the talent they used to.

Could the Scouts use better across the board talent, no doubt, but I have to disagree in your analysis. One thing the leadership has worked hard at over the past few years is the talent issue. From what I've been told repeatedly is that the talent level over the past several years has consistently gotten better. Therefore, if true, where do we armchair quarterback next?...If you haven't heard though, the latest curve ball tossed out by Madison's leadership is that the corps would be more competitive if it had more money to work with...Unfortunately though, let's not kid ourselves, placement at the end of the season has a direct correlation to attracting talent. Let's hope that their talent search efforts wont be adversely affected.

Lol. Some of us don't need group therapy, we need full out Nurse Ratched treatment!

Or maybe several drinks...maybe, oh. Nine White Russians?

Simply selecting fresh pieces is not a theme. There's only one reason for Phantom's deflated scores this year: design. There's no theme around the selected pieces tying them together, no story, no through-line, no advancing or heightening, no game/pattern, and no meaning. Some of the set pieces harken back to prior shows, but it's not clear enough. Defy the sheets all you want, but one of the categories is GE. As a result, this amazing corps will place 9th. You don't need story and props, but you do need meaning-- a thematic argument, either on the field or off, that grows and builds for dramatic effect throughout the show culminating in an ending or anti-ending.

Madison's concept has thematic depth but is inherently flawed in its adaptation. The new show's story content doesn't match the original Broadway music in timbre, style or tone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8lzmbAn8_Y

So if you are the Christ

You're the great Jesus Christ

Prove to me that You're no fool

Walk across my swimming pool.

If You do that for me

Then I'll let you go free.

C'mon, King of the Jews!

These are the reasons for the low scores, not that they need to "clean their feet." Please.
