Madison Scouts 2018

It doesn’t mattter what you said, or what to a reasonable person is in the spirit of what you said. It’s social media. What matters is what someone wants you to have said.

Back to your post at issue, you’re right. Forward’s BOD isn’t going to project DCP threads up on a wall screen during their planning sessions. Really wish there was a more grounded sense of perspective on online commentary. We’re here because we enjoy drum corps, not because we’re about to vote on whether to declare independence from King George.

I do know and have known many of the players at Madison. I have in the past viewed an opinion to many and I could offer some issues that I saw coming when staff was announced. It wouldn't have done a darn thing here but only fuel the fire. I did see a lot coming and although there are MANY good intentions toward Scouts you know the saying on good intentions..oh well enough said

How about lets flip that crazy times statement. Why nowadays the world has to know peoples innermost feelings on everything from what they ate for dinner to what they do every minute of the day. yes crazy times that many think they are so important that they think others care

I had a New York Strip steak last night. It was tasty!

Finally saw the show last night. Uniforms looked fine out on the field, though the hat would have fit nicely with these. Soloist is incredible - I wish they wouldn’t wait until the back half of the show to feature her. My only complaint, really, is that it feels like a “safe” show musically. Jazzy-lite, like what Crossmen do.  That’s a small gripe though. I think the design is fine.

Ah, back to the 2018 Scouts show. Thanks.

I don’t mind the show. Like many others, I am kind of blasé about the first one third or so. Just a lot of nothing grabbing at me. I like your description: safe. It’s very conservative. Now that I’ve seen it three times, plus an afternoon of rehearsals, I still can’t picture much from the guard. Big music moments, what few there are, seem to lack an accompanying visual from the guard. That’s noticeable compared to Colts, Crossmen.

The costumes look fine to me, even distinctive. (I prefer a more recognizable Madison look. But what they have now looks good.) The theme would seem to have great potential. The soloists - there are others besides the flugle horn - are great. The show just only nibbles at me. The top 12-14 should bite.

So let's look at some numbers. Between 1972 (DCI's founding) and 1985, the year Cavaliers became competitive again after fifteen years of being non-factors, Scouts had an average placement of 4.9. Decidedly elite.

Starting in 1985 and going through 1999, a period when Cavaliers were very regularly top 3, Scouts were still averaging 5.3. Not really much of a change - and both corps were all-male, and competing for the same membership, but it didn't seem to hurt either.

But starting in 2000, and continuing through last year, Madison's average placement is 10.2. For kids who are marching today, Madison has been the Crossmen, competitively, for their lifetimes (no offense Bonesmen, but the numbers are what they are).

So what happened in 2000 that caused such a drastic sea change? There have been DCI Hall of Fame designers and managers working with Scouts in the 2000-2017 period (I mean, Jim Prime was arranging the book in the early 10's), so it's not like they didn't have access to good behind the scenes talent. Was there/is there a mindset in the organization that keeps them from being able to move in a way that checks the Box 5 requirements that the top 7 hit by the end of the season?

Given that there's been a fair amount of sturm and drang in this thread since last week, maybe this is an opportunity for thoughtful analysis of what changed (were all factors internal, or were there things out of the organization's control?), WHY it changed, and what a path toward renewed relevancy would look like.  If the Scouts faithful take the emotion out of it and look at the bigger picture (for ex: there was no Crown in the 90s, and Bluecoats were a 10th place corps back then), maybe there's a path forward indicated in the analysis.

I'm not a Scout alum, and have no dog in the fight: this is just in the interest of deepening the discussion in ways that can have value for every corps, at every level.

Thank you.

Oh please. There was nothing in his post where you could imply he treats females as objects. Or that, for the "pleasure of others" the costume should be designed to be more attractive.

HE LITERALLY SAID HE WANTED THE DRESS TO BE

NOTHING about her, NOTHING about her playing, NOTHING about how she fits in the show. He wanted her to be MORE ATTRACTIVE. At why else would you make something more attractive than to derive more pleasure for audience members?

THAT is objectification, and that is the kind of crap that needs to go away quickly, lest the next Hopkins continues to prey on victims without consequence.

I have watched the show several times.  There are some nice spots, especially when the brass lets loose. I do have difficulty read the guard work when the members use the red flags against the corps proper red uniforms.  Perhaps with some re-staging and re-writes of the beginning of the show the visual scores will see a big jump.

I remember several years ago corps members told me not pay attention to DCP.  Phantom and the Cadets got trashed on here many times.  I always thought DCP was to be supportive of drum corps.  Maybe this is a sign of our society.  I do believe in constructive criticism; however, we must remember that corps members read DCP.

I think hate and trolling are different than critical feedback, no matter how harsh. I'm pretty sure all alumni love the corps, and it's gotta be hard to sit back and watch what is happening.

The problem is all the talk here really doesn't do a thing to help, In fact, it can hurt. Alumni have a more direct source and if that doesn't work here doesn't either.

UNFORTUNATELY...the best way to VOICE your opinion these days is with your $$$$$$$$$$$$

Does anyone have direct knowledge of how morale is in the corps?  The things I have heard have not been good, but I’m taking what I’ve heard with A LOT of salt.

I do know that some current MMs have told their family to sell their finals tickets and/or not to come.
