The cymbal players at SC used to be required to shave their heads all season. And take a hard slap across the face before each show, sometimes from staff.

Ah, times. How they change. Was glad to see both practices die off.

SCV had a cymbal player last year that had a sweet fro. San Bernardino show last year, my son ran in to him and they spent a couple minutes complimenting each other's fro's LMAO.

Not following you. Can you elaborate?

Unfortunately I have a Los Angeles public education, so you gotta break the simplest things down for me LMAO.

I think Illiana was referring to corps BITD that required closely groomed hair so it didn’t stick out from under your shako or hair could not touch the collar of your uniform. A throwback to VFW/ American Legion days.

Just takin’ a stab at it.

Don't even get me started on how dang proud I am of that cymbal line. I was sad to see that performer pull back their hair during the season though... hope it was his choice.

So but that makes me so happy to read about your son, esp as someone who struggled with my multiracial hair every season, validation is sweet. Personally, I just love seeing all the preformers' hair and faces so much I can't imagine going back to headgear for good. That change in the activity alone made me weepy a couple times this past season.

That said, nothing beats the super clean FJM era of uniforms for me, aussie and star on for every show. Uniform but somehow still bespoke on all body types. The aussies were a powerful symbol. And I think they reinforced group chemistry. But IIH they were way too hot for shows like Phoenix, Memphis, Houston, etc... melting Vanguard is no bueno.

I would love to see a corps try to get headwear on my son's Fro. Good luck with that LMAO.

I had a Fro right before my first audition camp at Cadets.

I cut it off before camp.

That was a very sad day.

Never had a fro after that.

Other than the guard and pit, hats need to be part of the uniform/costume. The experiment has been tried and failed.  Hats give a sense of sophistication, style and intrigue. Without them the horns and field percussion look unfinished and ordinary. It actually just looks like a glorified dress rehearsal.

Just my two cents.

Could not agree more.  Basic.

I'd love to know where it has failed other than in yours and others eyes. I didn't know that corps were being graded by the judges based on whether they had headgear or not.

I envy all you guys that have/had a fro. I have been bald forever. But I have learned to love my aero dynamic look lol.

First night of boot camp when you get your head shaved, I was already bald so they put me in the chair and made the barber rake the clippers over my skull and brain matter, then I had to do push-ups while everyone else got their hair cut because they thought I was being a smart-### coming there bald. They didn't understand nor care that I started balding back in the 2nd grade LMAO.

Well then lol...
