  3. and what makes you think it isn't Monty Campbell, Oh Lord of the Shed? Funny how people think and that MP video. The only clue I could come up with was, "What does a lumberjack yell when he cuts down a tree?” I immediately thought of Monty Pythons Lumberjack song.

  5. Ok now that the word is out, I was a soprano player who switched to bari when a little bird (Frank Kubinak) told me BS would need baritones. I played that (Lead Bari) until 1966 when I got drafted. When I got out of the service I didn't touch a horn till 1978 when I picked up a soprano again and went to the Sunrisers. Eventurally wound up in Cabs ( lead sop) starting in 1990 till 98 and my Swan song was Sky Alumni 99. Now I dust my horns........ On a side note.....I was a pretty adequate player until I was in Cabs alumni in 94-5 winter and played the scores from the 60's where the leads played ALL the time. When I went back to the competing corps I had incredible chops. Back me up here Frank Ponzo........so I recommend alumni corps to my fellow fossils!.. Sky Alumni was just as good.

  8. actually in the 90s maybe early 2000s som e guards used some forms of drumming in some show themes. I myself did a drum feature on the backs of some chairs ( was murder teaching some guard girls to do it and I brought in a drum man to teach and clean it)

  9. Yes you did, Don. That's fossil50, aka Tim Campbell!

  10. I always thought Tim was younger than I, maybe because I KNOW how much younger Donna is (from sitting next to her at rehearsals). I guess he's better preserved. I also had no idea he played bari. Of course most people have no idea I played bari either. Remind me to respect my elders going forward.

  11. What? Oh my goodness, that never happens here. Never. Never seen it once. But if someone feels that because Lady Gaga had someone throwup on her, then it WILL HAPPEN EVERYWHERE NOW THAT IT IS ACCEPTABLE. I think Phantom should take Swan Lake and have a show in the style of Spartaswan or Swanacus.

  12. I suspect that the judges apply balance & blend in micro-ensemble settings, or perhaps as appropriate to musical phrasing in full ensemble (i.e. if its obviously a lush phrase in a ballad and the snares are monkey drumming, or playing with a harsh, staccato style). Or if the snares are too soft in the middle of a full battery phrase; or if one tenor is playing louder than the others.

  14. Dude, seriously. I never said I get squeamish, or it violates my fragile sensibilities. My only point about Phantom is that maybe it's time to try something new, a different design path. Ever since Spartacus, they've been trying to recapture that magic, and have placed 9th, 6th, 5th, 3rd, and 6th. If they're trying to get back on top of the rankings, perhaps thy should go in a different direction. Or just go out of your way to throw jabs at people that have different opinions

  15. Unfortunately the producer of the show had some last minute scheduling conflicts so our live radio show has been cancelled for today. But we will be uploading a condensed podcast type interview session with Mike Hardiek when he arrives in San Antonio. Anybody have any questions for him? EDIT: Well a few things fell into place. We are a go! Tune in at 1:30P.M. Central Time http://www.spreaker.com/show/the_crossmen_show_aka_bones_hour

  20. true, but not on a big level picture. thats more in terms of balance and blend with those around them...aka is that pod of baris balanced with each other? Is the snares blending the sound. from the field, you shouldn't be talking about the brass and percussion being balanced together

  26. youre right it is a persons choice but i think there is far less negativity here toward PR( loved by many for sure) than there was recently on not just Fantasia 12 years ago( also loved by many ) but WGI shows in general. either way one does have a right to an opinion, and things will just go on as usual. Thankfully! Now I didnt say you posted negativity toward anything WGI..as I recall

  27. There's no need to tease your teasers though. The "Hey, keep an eye out for a tweet on an update about an announcement for a thing pertaining to 2014 sometime soon" is tired. ** Especially when you know that what you're teasing isn't really what people are hoping to hear anyway.

  31. Well, thanks for calling me out. Didn't see Dartmouth's show, but I've heard it was a comedy routine mostly. So no, probably wouldn't have been out of the question. I can appreciate comedy. But thanks for putting words in my mouth and trying to call me out, really thank you.

  32. My thought process is that it's not necessarily DCI's job or responsibility to spend time & resources educating people on the intricacies and subtleties of adjudicating to their sheets. DCI has actually published several articles over the years doing so: in a way that I would think is satisfactory (including publishing all of their current sheets with brief explanations on the changes). All of the current sheets on online, a google search away from anyone looking at the rubric and explanation for any subcaption: WC and Open Class. After that point, if people still can't understand how a perceived grounded percussion instrument is evaluated, there's not a ton DCI can do short of hosting a call-in Q&A or something with their head judges.

  33. In judging a performance caption on the field..."balance" is NOT something you would EVER evaluate.

  35. Here's my review: I saw no actual corps perform, and I was among the closest to the back of the stage while we performed. I had a blast playing to an appreciative crowd. 25 years after I first performed with the Westshoremen in April of 1989, I performed for the last time in April 2014 with the Westshoremen...and the crowd dug it. Couldn't ask for a better crowd for my retirement show.

  36. What Frank said... a full house. And a very enthusiastic audience. I was with the Westshoremen Alumni corps... so I only saw the last few corps in performance. Caballeros Alumni, as usual, brought down the house. "Echano" in particular was smokin'.... great soprano solo work!! Also nice to hear "I Love Lucy" and "Cuban Pete"... two Cabs classics from way back in the day, updated with some modern-day touches. Also, the percussion section really knocked their new drum features out of the park... impressive for the first time on stage with the new charts. This is "old school" drum corps percussion at its absolute highest level. The U.S. Naval Academy Drum and Bugle Corps was rock-solid. I was sitting in the first row, right in front of the tympani in the corps' pit ensemble... and the two tympanists who alternated on those drums were killin' it. Great stuff. Also a wonderful big, full low-brass sound, especially the tubas (yes, tubas... the corps is now playing on B-flat instruments, and playing them quite well). I am always amazed at how good this corps is, given the demands of everyday academy life on the corps members and the relatively limited rehearsal time they have. And congratulations to the Class of 2014 members of the corps, as they go on to their duty stations as officers in the Navy and Marines, helping defend our country. Bravo to them!!! The host corps, the Hanover Lancers Alumni, were, in a word, outstanding. The "Men of Harlech" chart is absolutely stellar, with a vocal chorale introduction followed by what can be best described as a beautiful "brass choir" sound. The horn line got, shall we say, a tad rough around the edges during parts of their "When A Man Loves A Woman" park-and-play feature... LOL... but overall, I love how this brass section plays. They perform within themselves, no one trying to bend the bell backwards with volume, with a great deal of attention to tone quality and ensemble blend. Quite honestly, not every alumni corps does this. All in all, this York concert is a great show. I hope it remains on the springtime schedule for many years to come!
