  1. The direction the ensemble went this past season has had me incredibly excited for the talent pool and the direction of the ensemble this year.

  3. Just went and re-watched Surf's 2023 show because this thread came up again. How anyone can think they don't deserve to be World Class is truly beyond me. They are certainly not the cleanest, but their energy is infectious and the hornline plays like there's 80 of them out there. They are truly working their butts off and having a World Class experience. This thread was, is, and always will be a massive L.

  4. Have you come up with your answer yet? How many years is too many? What is the cutoff for reporting sexual assault?

  5. Big turnout at camp. Sousaphones were out and the gym was packed. Heard someone mention that well over half the hornline was filled, not sure about percussion but there was a lot of talent at this camp overall. Hornline played through a Christmas tune as well as a little unnamed something, and let’s just say… Michael Klesch is proving once again why he’s the best brass arranger in drum corps. Crown will be sounding better than ever in 2024.

  6. Very sorry to hear this. It's hard to overstate how important the St. Angel family was to Phantom Regiment, particularly in the 80's and 90's. She's back with Dave. My condolences to Kevin and the rest of the family.

  8. Edit to add: it's just shorthand for "at this moment" Oh, I wasn't alluding to anything cause I don't know much insider info on the finances. Just meant to imply that maybe in some distant magical time in the future, leadership will explain in more detail, and transparently: how we got here (software and personnel changes/pandemic are understandable but that doesn't explain 3 years of noncompliance) what's being done to ensure it doesn't happen again and who is being held accountable for those mistakes (and how) All things not happening transparently atm. If potential members are showing hesitancy, as some are rumoring, then that's an indicator that trust needs some rebuilding. These are some ways to do that with the whole community.

  9. Saw a photo of their recent camp - looks like they had big turnout in brass (although that can change by summer). But anyway, so far looks good for 24.

  12. Thanks for your kindness everyone. There are people who enter our lives that give us comfort and understanding and through their efforts make us better people. Nancy was one of the many that fit that bill.

  13. Excellent choice, Hook'Em. I say it every day, History has meaning. Embrace it and honor it, young people. Don't toss it aside. BTW, for the anti-costume/prop people, notice the '71 corps. Yes, it's really been going on that long.

  15. Yeah, the old “accounting software update” excuse. I have a secret: it’s not the software’s fault. It’s the user who doesn’t understand how to use it

  16. I honestly can't attest to why they have the problems they have. They DID have a bookkeeper from an outside firm. Apparently that stopped. I'm not buying their explanation. They had been using Quick Books forever, how changing to a different software all the sudden prevents them from tracking finances for 5 years is pretty concerning. Right?

  17. i have heard that many corps in the region....all age and WC and OC have been proactive sharing information with auditionees about other corps. for example Bucs had like 300 people show up at their membership, and i am told they were quick to give info about other groups

  19. If you ask fans of Carolina Crown when the corps’ rise to become one of the perennial competitors for the DCI World Championship, a good number of them would point to the 2003 season. After dropping out of finals the season before, Crown made a number of changes, not the least of which was the addition of Matt Harloff as brass caption head, a position he still holds as of this article. Crown’s horn lines are legendary for their power and dexterity, but it took time to build to that level, and 2003 was step #1. https://medi-nerd.com/2022/12/23/12-days-of-drum-corps-2003-carolina-crown/

  20. (((HUGS))) It stays with you. That’s why I got so mad when I read on drumcorps Reddit that a young woman who was assaulted was told by someone in the DCI office that “she’d just have to get over it”.

  21. Well said. As a survivor of sexual assault at 15, i can assure you that it has impacted me for the 50 years since, and will probably impact me in some way, for the rest of my life. Most people don’t understand that surviving this type of trauma affects choices you make in your life, such as who to date, who to marry, when to leave, etc. It contributes to risk-taking and lack of impulse control. A major decision i made at 18 was influenced by that assault, and scripted my entire adult life, in a manner not at all consistent with my hopes and dreams. And i am an emotionally strong woman. If i were of a weaker emotional build, it could have destroyed me.

  23. There was a Riverdance dancing challenge on The Amazing Race last Wednesday. There was this one big clumsy guy trying to do the dance. It took him nine attempts and it was still terrible so they took pity on him and passed him through. I was laughing so hard I was crying.
