  1. May I suggest going and watch 1978's shows on You Tube for therapy and just enjoy the fun? Don't leave though. You came in really late....go back and watch the changes that back then were just gold and soak it all in....because that will be 2020 to someone one day. I am amazed at how far the marching arts has come but love the old shows even more each year.
  2. Goodness gracious do they realize after all these years the progression is SO PREDICTABLE? I mean Blue Devils and Santa Clara are at 68.5 right now without even stepping off the field.
  3. After moving from a seventh chord endings to the age of dissonance in corps since the 80's, I have grown tired of the dissonance. The pieces like Academy's Bridge and Blue Knights second half piece are welcome. (Best BK group since 6th place) I just wish the brilliant people of staffs would move us away from all dissonance to another period of time of music that is not always the same. Robert W Smith began the move in 1985 with Suncoast Sound's show which is still one of my favorite shows and it has just become TO ME a place where staffs haven't figured out how to lead out of. There is so much good about drum corps and this years's shows but the dissonance has just become I think expected. Where as drum corps used to push the marching arts activity I think it still does but BOA has some bands in it that are just fantastic on their approach to the arts. Just my two cents.
  4. David didn't wear armor to fight Goliath. Key point if you thinking of design of a uniform around him.
  5. I actually fell asleep watching their first streamed show on FloMarchingtv......I was ashamed....Fan for 40 years....
  6. I use a Roku device and just want to say my audio and picture were solid this weekend. I was really impressed that there was multicam at both shows. Bought a new soundbar for the season and seeing SCV win live Saturday night made my weekend. Let's do it again this weekend.
  7. Are Mandarins still talking about their reveal? I feel they are.......
  8. Oh joy they really aren't going to post scores till July 1? Then everyone will just have fun posting their own - on social media. I mean since I have been following this since the 70's there is a regular projection tic system or today's system and it is so predictable it will be fun to watch social media and how close the fans are based on past seasons. I really hope there is someone that comes out of the gate below the usual suspects that just gets some fun going. It is so rare.
  9. Boy, can this be brought back up again decade after decade? This was an issue when I first got into the activity in the 70's. Saw it in covering corps when I was a writer for Drum Corps World. Bias was totally left out of your thesis and that will come with both old and new judges and not change a thing and never will. There are judges judging shows today in corps and bands that when you see them they do have a reputation. One of if they will give you solid comments and ones that are in for ego and status too. Someone will always be biased. Change all you want and this year, from the moment Devils finished in Stanford I knew they would win having seen Crown and Blue Coats. The design, music and execution was already in position. It was just a wonderful classic show. As I have gotten older, I have learned to not be biased myself against corps but be thankful for a well executed, designed, taught and thought out show that connects. But there are some of you reading this that think Vanguard should have won. Well, I love SCV more than Devils, but I could never explain all that I have take in almost 40 years of watching shows, but Devils to me was just one better. 11. and I love this activity and all that make it happen and I miss dearly many corps that are not around today that brought me moments of great joy of this activity and never had a chance to win and please Cavaliers you have to do Santa Elsmerada from 79 and 80 again in the 70th show. Got to. It impacted so many people then and high school bands/guardwork for decades....two cents worth
  10. Well, me thinks Phantom Regiment should be going out and hitting the trail looking for some trumpets. Madness....Madness.... Madison needs to decide who they are. Was their past just a nothing burger or are they now character actors placing 12th and fending off people for that spot for fun each year.
  11. I was there in 1981 when Phantom Regiment passed out sheets explaining what the heck was going on in Spartacus. Heh. People were complaining before that they didn't understand the show.
  12. They gotta get some trumpets for next season. Devils did it this season after last year. It's so noticeable it hurts.
  13. Bluecoats show is music and design wise too close to last year and thus I compare them to 27th Lancers* in 1980. Their Ballad is not an Axiom moment either. It is Devils, SCV and Crown's to win *Can I say how much I miss them? Thank you.
  14. I have way too many....fan since 1978. for example I am sitting here watching 1986 27th Lancers and I got tears because of all the other shows I remember. 1978 SCV when they do the Bottle Dance. High schools across America copied it for years. 1978 Crossmen RChristmas Music copied for years by bands after that Every show that first year of Top 12 impacted me because I don't remember a year since that had so many individual pieces in shows that High School Bands still do today....
  15. Cavies kept adding superior layering and content that Cadets didn't. I think Cadets did as much w that show as they could and amazed at the hard work and how it paid off. I was impressed w both but can see why Cadets faded. Their best show was Sat. The scoring is a bit off when you jump to Blue Stars from Crossmen. BIG difference. Complaints: the recaps. That was a just plain stupid move Drums Along The Rockies ran an hour behind DCI should record a 30 second bio on each corps for the DCI Live stream. Have drum major or someone explain the show and thoughts. Due to stupid copyright rules. Crown could have played Desparado instead of that other piece. Would have been beautiful. DCI communication - even on bad news. At least keep us updated. For example like DCI Live started and no one gets and email or anything telling when shows start, you have to go looking. As an old fan...the activity changes are fine. BlueCoats show was a follow up to Tilt but so fresh and so original. We need more of that. It connected w fans in a way I haven't seen in 20-30 years or ever. Bravo.
  16. In watching the scores since 1978, I told DCI that the main problem with this change is their customer was not consulted. The fans. (The ones paying for tickets to the events) THE CUSTOMER I understand the corps choosing to do something like this to try it. But, I would have sat in the meeting at laughed at them. Now the reason it's key is that DCI has lost a lot of cache w law over copyrights and a connection to fans already. They had to take down Fan Network. Up till this past weekend you couldn't get downloads anymore, just CD's. (one step from ordering cassettes from Ken Kobold like I did for years) They had stepped backwards. Then this. Another takeway for their customers. It wasn't thought out well.
  17. Phantom's opener is the most unmemorable one in their history. The show is just plain boring....and the music selections....You get the idea. What has a staff done to make Phantom not Phantom anymore? Hate it for the kids more than anything.
  18. Thanks for this information I was wanting to see Fort Mill tonight. Appreciate it FFF
  19. Glad to see so many agree with Spirit of 1980. Having followed the activity since 1978.... that was the loudest and nicest sounding hornline ever. 79 was special too and 1978 was just plain different and pure. As far as loudest, Avant Garde 1982 fits in there for 1st tour of "and The Angels Sing," it was very, very loud. Imbalanced corps that struggled with great drum major that looked at us each night on 1st tour to hold the last note a little longer. By the third Southern show he was looking for us on the front row! At the buses loudest: 1983 Suncoast Sound tied Spirit at the DCS Championship that year and the celebration playing of "Aquarius" is still the loudest piece ( I am not tying in warm ups) but it was a moment I will never forget. Was covering the south for DCW and people were screaming all around me and when they played that nite you couldn't hear anything. Just people jumping up and down. The fact that they had caught them was huge. {This was off the field mind you at the buses.......) Looking forward to those hornlines today that create moments like the older days....... FFF
  20. Western Cowboys always defeat El Nacho Libre! I believe what you wear says alot about your show and I thought I was watching a Power Rangers Show in Denver Last Night after Madison did the unveiling of their guard. Congrats to Troopers. The whole package is there including the sunburst. Solid and very entertaining. FFF
  21. While I have followed Vanguard since 1978, the ending is really just Jacksonville State's Marching Southerners's 2006 drill at the end with the company front and then the continuation. But, Southerners ending is better with the continuation and wedge. It is classic corps style and brought down the house. You can hear it on the Southerners web page under media. I am sure SCV will add onto that and for the SCV/Cadet battle on here I experienced most all the Copland stuff and to each his own. SCV had an impact point at the end that was quite nice. Why don't you argue who had better Children of Sanchez's in 1979? Just enjoy what is presented this year. Old Timer
  22. This would be an interesting change to the demise of DCI. Most corps would go to DCA and DCI would slowly merge in with BOA for an off season educational voyage. Hate to think of what would happen with the video vault of the junior corps moving out of DCI and how to obtain old video and audio. Legal stuff takes years. But, you add woodwinds I am gone. They haven't been needed in the 31 years I have followed the activity. We just need to get back to some lower placed top 12 corps that have an identity again and not all play music that you could switch uniforms on them and not know who they are. Out.
