DO NOT PLAY LIST.

Recommended Posts

We played Williams in 88, 89, 90 and 91.

Yeah, sure, but did John have permission for any of those arrangements? I could believe either way, actually.

I totally met Jethro Tull yesterday. He's really cool! :soapbox:

That's amazing, seeing as how Jethro Tull died in 1740.....

  • 1 year later...
Getting permission from composers is a VERY recent thing. Some still don't do it.

BOA has great resources on their site. Here is something I lifted...

Some composers or publishers do not allow band arrangements of the material they own. This is sometimes due to contractual agreements or the prerogative of the composer. The list below is an accumulative list of material to date that has been denied in the past or that the publisher has indicated will be denied in the future. Always check with publishers before selecting your program.

1. "The Easter Symphony - Mvt. 2 (Death Tree)" by David Holsinger

(publisher instructed to deny requests to arrange 2nd Movement only)

2. Music and film scores by John Williams

3. Music by Joaquin Rodrigo ("Concierto de Aranjuez")

4. Music by Charles Ives

5. "God Bless America"

6. "Riverdance"

7. Music by Vincent Persichetti

8. The use of Literary Characters (i.e. from "Where the Wild Things Are")

9. Music and stories of Dr. Seuss

10. "Symphony #3" by James Barnes

11. Works by David Maslanka (Mr. Maslanka will consider personally creating a new commissioned work or arrangements for your band.)

12. "Ritual Fire Dance" by Manuel de Falla

13. Music from any Disney Film less than six (6) months after the film's release.

14. "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff

15. Music composed or performed by the rock group Van Halen.

16. "Barbarian Horde" from the Motion Picture "Gladiator"

17. "The Battle" from the Motion Picture "Gladiator"

18. "Progeny" from the Motion Picture "Gladiator"

19. Music composed or performed by the rock group U2.

20. "She Loves You" by John Lennon and Paul McCartney

21. "Space Oddity" by David Bowie

22. "Welcome to the Black Parade" performed by My Chemical Romance

23. Music and Film scores by Thomas Newman

24. All works by Bruce Springsteen

The following will not necessarily be denied. However, our experience has been that permission may take longer than average to be granted. You should allow a minimum of 6-8 weeks or longer to license these works.

1. Hal Leonard requires that all requests be submitted via their website. You should allow approximately 6 weeks to complete the licensing process. However, the following exceptions should be noted:

* Walt Disney Music: Music from movies released within the past 6 months may not be approved.

* Any music controlled by PolyGram UK (primarily music by Björk)

* Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber requires the approval of his UK office. You will be required to submit your score for approval. Allow a MINIMUM of 3 months from the time to submit your score.

* Music composed/performed by Queen. Hal Leonard is required to obtain permission from the copyright owner in the UK. Please allow a MINIMUM of 3 months from the time you submit your request.

* Music composed/performed by Sting and/or The Police

2. Operas intended for a complete show (mos. to approve)

3. "Boléro" by Maurice Ravel

4. "Turandot" by Giacomo Puccini

Apparently I'm late for the thread. Excuse the excessive quotes.

Williams will let you do it, but the fees are excessively high....most other composers who charge at least lube up first before they rape your bank account.

I had to lol at this.

Yeah....Maslanka is a serious no-no. I was on the premier recording of "A Child's Garden Of Dreams" with the UMass Wind Ensemble back in 88-89. I got to meet the cat....really eccentric. Lives up in a cabin in Montana.

We have a Unibomber composer? :P

I wish more corps would play Hans Zimmer.

Agreed.

Alfred Reed came to a Regiment rehearsal in 84 when they were performing "Armenian Dances". After peeling his face off in the horn arc, they took him up to the box and marched it for him, too. My lovely bride, who marched that summer in the Regiment guard, says he was thrilled and shook hands with every single corps member.

What a great story.

I can't begin to count the amount of music I would never have heard if it weren't for drum corps or marching band.

Agreed.

and the only "fee" we were charged was a request that the actual composer's name be listed as "William Russo" and not "Bill Russo"

Another great "story"

PR's version of Nessun Dorma irritates me (mellophone does not equal tenor!!!), but their Fire of Eternal Glory is incredible...

Any time that I have ever heard of Nessun Dorma, a baritone/euphonium has been playing it. lol

Regiment just have to be the oddballs.

I'd never even HEARD of Chuck Mangione until BD captured the World Open title back in 75'. They gave that guy a boost and a half.

Frankly, I 'd say it was the other way around. By 1980 for every person in the world that had heard of the Blue Devils Drum Corps, there were 2,000 that had heard of Chuck Mangione. It was the music composition of Chuck Mangione, and his praise of the Drum Corps activity and the Corps that he enthusistically supported in their use of his musical compositions that gave a boost to the Drum Corps movement at a time when the Drum Corps movement was in it's ascendancy (1970's ). Mangione was a TV analyst in the booth at one the DCI Chamionships when the Finals back then was broadcast live, and was very complimentary in his commentary of the DCI musical amateurs he saw performing on the field below. It was music composer and multi time Music Grammy winner Chuck Mangione that gave Drum Corps... " a boost and a half ".

Whatever their motivation is, I believe they should be respected for however they see fit to make their music public.

There's lots of other music out there to choose.

If any corps wants to play my music, they've got it!

Maybe a Jade update?

Take a look at the list that thirdcoast has recopied above. Imagine you've got a chance to talk for fifteen minutes to one of the composers listed there, and play him or her a CD and/or DVD, and try to make the case that his/her music would be presented really effectively by a drum corps.

What would you say? Which corps would you be arguing for? What CDs or DVDs would you play for the composer? (Remember, you only have fifteen minutes.)
