Should judging be flat?

VERY cool, especially with that drum finish! Curious to a) see what costumes they're wearing, and b) so this in context of the full show.

Thanks for sharing!

They might be hanging on the fence behind them.

Not hard enough, too early to be clean

It goes back to the Balancing the Equation, you know take something from here and it has to go there?

It’s two half baked idea preformed just so-so and neither wow me…as a pure drum moment, weak, more so considering the number of people and drums on stand….as a jungle gym moment…weak..It wouldn’t even make the cut for an audition with a broke ### circus

I don’t understand getting extra credit for doing 2 things poorly at the same time

If you are so bored by mastering the fundamentals move on to something else

Much of this dual demand looks like cheats to cover sloppy execution

Looks like they're on the fence just to left of the drums. So maybe some sort of circus show? Would make sense with the drum finish. I think that's some really cool stuff, Pulse always has some really cool tricks in their shows.

it's true, visual demands have encroached upon musical design. The things required to do visually to get the # do come into play when putting beats on the paper.

But...and I think this is a seriously underlying theme is.....everybody does the same sets of moves body wise. Every drum break looks the same. the same twists, turns, ankle moves, leg moves, etc etc......

Which is exactly my point - the visual part of SD prompts commonality and similarity, not diversity. And it runs throughout the corps, not just the drumline.

Tuba's gotta dance to get SD credit, and there's only so many ways to dance (or build pyramids, or play tenors upside down).

Where does it end before it becomes ridiculous movement only for SD points-sake?

You are only kidding yourself however if you believe that a Guard could stand at attention along the back sideline, with their backs to the audience, for approx. a quarter of the show, not move a muscle, and still win a DCI Title.

your analogy is flawed.

the guard does not spin rifle from the start to finish of the show. it would not fit the music and visual design.

the battery does not ram notes from the start to finish of the show. it would not fit the music and visual design.

the guard contribution varies greatly of the course of a program. dance, equipment, drill, role playing -- many different types of contributions. the reason they don't need to go tacit is simple -- their contribution can be modified to fit during the entire program. the battery is not quite as versatile (at least with their instruments on). OTOH ive seen many battery members contribute to the show instead of going tacit. i kind of agree with your objection -- if the battery instrumentation is not appropriate musically find some other way for those performer to contribute.

Kudos to you for a conciliatory post.

Your reply is flawed. Most of the Guard sections utilize Guard equipment other than rifles as their majority Guard equipment utilized in their shows ..... not rifles.

More pertinent however, is that we are referring to an entire section ( sans the pit ) remaining " MOTIONLESS ".... not " moving a muscle" for a quarter of the show. No movement.. not even a step, left, right, nor forward, nor back. Yet such motionless, non playing in a section of Corps for a quarter of the show can STILL lead to a DCI Title ( as pointed out, it has been done )... but that section can not be Guard. This is because it is the Guard and the Visual that drive home the theme more than any other, and what principally drives the most points that can be had on the current judging sheets. It was a VISUAL change that drove home the extra few tenths needed for Phantom Regiment to secure the DCI title for themselves the last week of the summer season in 2008, lest we forget ( not principally a Brass, Percussion, etc last week of season change. ).

That may have etched them into the audience's hearts, but it did not win them the title. As can be seen by the score recap. They were 3rd in Vis Performance, 4th in Guard, tied for 2nd in GE Vis almost half a point down. But 1st by a huge margin in overall music and GE Music. That is why they won. Numbers don't lie.
