No, I want to go back to non-amplified acoustic performances...effectively eliminating voiceovers and vocalists.

The only way that happens is if you can eliminate it in the marching band and WGI arenas as well. All of the marching arts activities feed off each other, creatively and financially. It driven by business as well as creativity, and companies like Remo, Yamaha and others push their influence. It's the evolution of the activity to a place where many of us saw it moving years ago and it will never go back to what it once was.

Those were good times.  But there is no way to put the toothpaste back in the tube.  This is what it is now...either we embrace or we don't.  I don't mean this in a negative way.  It's just a realization I came to a few years back.

And we do have our memories and old videos.  :8_laughing:

I don't see that.  DCI should be different and unique. That's why we love it -- and that's why some of us did it.

We're not going back to the 1980s; I'm not saying that.  I don't care how weird BOA and WGI get but I like my drum corps pure.

I did think Doc Brown's DeLorean DMC-12 souped up with his creative Flux Capacitor was just perfect in every way. I wish I was in that film so I could've taken a spin in it with ol Doc Brown back to " non amplified acoustic performances ".  But I think I missed that Casting Call, and now I'm stuck here, good, bad or indifferent in the DCI year of 2017.

DCI also has to pay the bills, which means finding corporate sponsorships to help keep it alive.

I absolutely respect your opinion; I've read your posts and your perspectives are excellent.

But extended vocals?

Let's think this through.  There's definitely a place for voice overs using electronics.  I'm okay with that in limited circumstances -- but vocals are like sung narration.  If I want to hear vocals I'll watch American Idol or something.  I'm not bashing singers in general or even Crown in particular.  Singers are great in their particular venue but, respectfully, I find extended vocals detract from the performance in drum corps.

Brass, drums, and limited electronics should be the order of the day; I cannot see the usefulness of woodwinds, strings, or vocals.  This isn't band.

This 100%. I also don't see the use of using synth to double the brass. It was just the brass players for so many years, why cover them up?

Exactly! Ultimately, when everything is said and done, I go to a drum corps show to hear killer brass and drums and that's it.

To be fair to him, the only reason he's really defending vocals is because everyone else is so against it. It's a bit of a "dissenting opinion for the sake of a dissenting opinion" to prevent this place from being an echo chamber.

Not to mention attract kids (I'm using that term loosely here) who want to participate, without which there would also be no activity.

MMs these days like the changes.

I'm sure not all of them do. It's not fair to generalize.
