  6. That deserves to win. That show is amazing. And the sound effects are nullified live by their face melting brass.

  8. Ed, the sheets are for the one time viewing, not for replay after replay after replay. I'm sure you'd find issues in every corps if you went that route.

  11. Dude, I love BD's show. It's great, solid drum corps. What BD does is unique among drum corps . . . but nonetheless it's pretty safe and formulaic. They've been doing this stuff for years. Which is fine, why change what works? Most fans understand it as well. It's just not what they come to a show to see. There's no reason to put anyone down just because they don't like it . . . it's pretty easy to understand why they don't.

  17. Hey guys, I usually don't chime in on threads like this, but here goes... 1) Kids get hurt at rehearsals when they don't follow instructions and either stop early or go on in the drill, so many (if not all corps) have ways of getting the whole group to start and stop together and drill that into the members early and often. So, stopping the show might actually hurt more kids, then help. 2) I have seen some posts about 2010 on here, so I feel the need to respond. In 2010, when Ryan got hurt, there was tremendous speculation about his injury here on DCP as it happened. The experts insisted that Ryan was a girl, there was blood on his uniform, and other ugly descriptions etc etc. I ran to the sidelines immediately when it happened, Jim Coates was already there taking him off the field, the field percussion judge stopped and helped him, and one of our drivers got hurt trying to run across the turf, I looked down at Ryan and asked him how he was doing. We all knew he was hurt and bad, but not like it was described online. The worst of it was that people here on DCP were "experts" on the issue. Even printed his name here online, before we even notified his family in Spokane, WA. I was fighting it here online, because I did not want inaccuracies to be stated. Foolish me. I stayed with Ryan for 5 days. Crown paid for a hotel room for his best friend to stay behind to help him get home. We contacted his family, who are the nicest people on the face of the planet (his Mom still thanks me all the time for what we did to take care of him). We raised money for him. We flew him to DCI last year to be with his corps family... and we all cheered for him to make the corps, but after the number of surgeries that he had, it was not meant to be. We needed another DM for the summer... and there was no better person than Ryan for the job. Please let this play out. The PC administration is doing their best to care for their member, working with their family, and treating the student with great respect and care. We all do that. As a matter of fact, Crown (like many other corps) now travels with a certified athletic trainer. No, not the part-time type, but the kind that this is her major in college and she is highly trained. Heck. Even our doctors and professional nurses that come around are highly impressed by her. I am sure that PC is doing their best. And when students need to go to hospitals, they go. So, with that said... Please... Don't jump ugly on the situation. = ) Happy Murfreesboro and Atlanta Regional weekend. If you are watching online or at the show and see or hear something that moves you... GET UP AND LET THESE KIDS KNOW IT! Stand.. Cheer.. Throw the proverbial babies! That's the difference between drum corps and... well, just about anything else. (going back to my lurking... have fun)

  18. Saw a tube video from a few days ago, they're slowing down and milking music of the night a little more. I like it.

  19. Saw the new ending at rehearsal today. INCREDIBLE! Should be in the show tonight! Expect a classic PR move.

  20. Really? Really? You are really missing out then. Have you never heard a drum corps hornline in person or a drumline in person or stood in just feet away from a color guard doing their thing? If you have, you certainly have lost that memory and feeling. If you haven't, then you ought to. You've either lost it or never had it. Sure you can see lots from a video, but it's not the same, will never be the same, would never generate the same strong opinions of those that are viewing it live. You can't garner the effect of the sound, intensity, emotion of drum corps in a recording. It's one thing that can't be bottled up in a recording (audio or A/V). Drum corps live. There is no substitute. There just isn't. Go to a drum corps show.

  21. Exactly right...and this is why drum corps must return to recruiting local members, & the activity must return to local & regional circuits & shows.

  24. I dunno about that. I think they are closer than the scores indicate. What I find far more interesting is the distance that Devils and Crown are putting on the rest of the field. They really are both that much better than everyone else.

  25. But that's exactly what you started out doing! If fans aren't "getting" the show (or aren't enjoying it despite "getting" it), that's a design failure on BD's part, in my opinion.

  27. I cant believe i just saw someone get a negative for saying Congrats BD. If you can tell me what was offensive maybe ill understand but they were congratulating the group that won the show. There is NOTHING wrong with that. Great Job tonight BD see you all tomorrow

  30. Really? Vanguard has my favorite show this year, but they've GOT to get the speakers under control, same thing happened in San Antonio. They'd be playing something very tasteful then CRACKLEPOPSSHSHSH.

  32. why would you say" sign of the times...people now are more sympathetic then bitd...many were told if someone fainted step on them and move on..in my day.i also dont think anyone said winning is more important BUT ask the kid who was hurt if they wanted to not see their group move on maybe to a victory.....get the person help with minimal disturbance....staff should have been watching and assisted if necessary........also when did winning become a dirty word

  33. SCV '99: the first time I heard it, I couldn't even listen to the show all the way through...I listened to the opener repeatedly. I love how the opener just starts from nothing and gradually builds up. Sets the mood perfectly Phantom '91: love the hornline, love the music. Especially the Mello solo Bluecoats 2010: I know this one is recent, but I have a feeling this will be a show that I will never stop listening too. I loved the hornline that year, and the opener just did it for me. I can loop that thing for hours and not get tired of it.

  34. Penguin - Though it is not the original owners, it is still pretty good. Go off hours or expect a 60 min wait for a table. Mac's Speed Shop - My favorite Q in the Charlotte area. Old gas station converted into a BBQ joint. More micro brews than you can shake a stick at, great q, staff with enough tats and spunk to make your experience that much more. Heck, any place with the motto "Where bikers stare at cowboys Who are laughing at the hippies Who are praying they'll get outta here alive.."is alright with me. Price's Fried Chicken - No explanation needed.... period. Landmark. Prohibition. Cabo Fish Taco. Or other options - http://www.tvfoodmaps.com/loc_NC_Charlotte.html

  35. However much I think we ought to be (obviously) really concerned about the health of the performers, is stopping the show really the right solution? People on this thread have already brought it up - the actual act of stopping the show could injure even more people. And as it is, the player was down for two minutes. For a leg/knee injury, those two minutes don't translate to any (significant) additional damage/injury. Should the judge have stopped to help him? ABSOLUTELY. Yes. He/she should definitely should have stopped to make sure the performer was okay. But, that being said, stopping the show and making the corp restart doesn't seem like the right solution to me. How do you imagine the player who went down would feel? That his injury made the corp restart their show? I think if we asked that player, he would agree that there are better options. Namely, I think, having a medic on the side of the field, much like they do for high school football games. Have a medical professional ready to take action (so that we don't have those two minute delays) and get the injured performer off the field safely and quickly, so that he/she can be treated. Judges, too, should make it a policy of stopping to help injured performers if they are in a position to do so. But trying to stop a show mid-performance and start over poses a number of risks in itself, not to mention that it is a very difficult call to make - when does one stop the show, and when does one try to let the performer get him/herself off the field? Was yesterday a shining example of what we should be aiming for if someone is hurt? Of course not. The judge should have helped him off the field and a medical professional should have been on the sidelines ready to treat BEFORE the show started. But if I were injured on the field, even if I couldn't move myself out of the way, I wouldn't want the show stopped unless my presence on the field posed a significant danger to my colleagues (i.e. - being down in the middle of the field, where lots of other movement is going on).

  36. Thank you, Thank you and THANK YOU!!! (by the way...did I say THANK YOU???) These frreaking armchair quarterbacks, who sit back and watch videos and JUDGE others, who make rediculous predictions, march 1 year in a corps that barely makes finals, who knows everything, telling the people that have been doing this on the field for 30+ years, that we are wrong....still freakin amazes me!!!

  39. True; but.... a) if some of the corps members failed to pay their dues by the first day of tour it is the duty of the director to state that those performers will not get on the bus, and if many or most have not paid their dues the corps should not go out on tour at all; b) if money from a grant or a major donor which is required to pay for tour costs is delayed, or an event such as somebody committing fraud emptying out the bank account occurs prior to going out on the road, it is the responsibility of the director to also delay or cancel going out on tour; c) if a tragic event such as a death or monetary theft occurs while the corps is on tour the director has the responsibility and duty to make a general public statement concerning that tragic event as to why the tour is being cut short. Point being if the director knew that there was not enough actual money in the bank after the DCI evaluation but "prior" to going out on tour the corps should have never boarded the buses in the first place. Perfection is not a human trait, and yes mistakes will happen. However, in most cases the demise of a drum corps does not occur from human error but from human stupidity. Going out on the road hoping the majority members will pay their dues during the tour is flat stupid; going out on the road without first securing money in the bank, hoping to collect some funds during the tour to cover the costs for buses, food, fuel, is flat stupid.

  40. Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree on that one. Some of my favorite shows since 2002, visually, are: 2003 Cavaliers: Spin Cycle (should have won, imo) 2004 Santa Clara Vanguard Okay, so I don't have many favorite shows since 2002, but there are two for you, at least...

  42. A perfect example of the opposite is Alliance 2011. Had they not moved quite so much and would have given the members some time to catch their breath... they could have placed much better. Not saying MBI "cheats" but they design it right and get that balance between doable and too demanding.

  45. So did BD in 2009, oh wait, they won that year, sitting down. It's about staging as much as movement when it comes to visual design and adjudication. It's not about how many sets, or how many notes. If that was the case, everyone would be playing runs, moving every count, and running endzone to endzone.

  46. I love this show!!! And I believe someone else already mentioned that this is strategically a great move by the corps management. More kids may want to go to Surf in the future and I suspect some of us dinos will be willing to drop some cash on the corps for completely entertaining us. We were talking with Surf people at their suvie booth in San Antonio - apparently the kids had just learned new drill the day before. I can't wait to see what else they add. And - the souvie booth appeared to have had quite a good sale day. Hmmm - blue pimp hat or pimp bear ???

  47. I find the pure joy and thrill of Surf's show to be utterly intoxicating. I so wish I could see them perform this thing live. I got more chills and thrills from watching their show on the San Antonio stream than I did from seeing any of this year's top ten shows live! That is a really fantastic accomplishment for a corps like Surf. This show is really something special.
