  1. I especially dislike the open wound with the large intestine hanging out.

  2. I was just checking the DCA schedule. (which is still not complete) The Cabs show in July looks like the most for your money. They have 13 corps listed as appearing. Hmmm must be starting that show about noon time

  3. After reading a few posts I have this to say.... This years show announcement has me as excited as the 2008 show announcement. 2008 is one of my favorite shows and I really do think this years show has the potential to match that type of excitement and energy. I think visually and musically this can be one of the best shows we have seen from this corps in awhile. I am actually mostly looking forward to seeing further development in all visual aspects... It had been a steady improvement since 2012. All I know is that I have a lot of faith in this years staff compared to what the 2012 staff put on the field.

  6. I loved the pitch bend. It was a great idea, and a novel use of electronics. I felt it was slightly overdone come Finals - too much of a good thing - but it was still awesomely done. And of course it let them add "tilt" to the music. BK... I'm one of the few who didn't fall for the show at all. I thought the music was great, but the script didn't match the emotion. Mike

  7. I like it. Like BK, it makes me think of snowy mountains, water, etc. Not bad for a corps named after a mountain range. I really, *really* disliked their previous jackets - the fade didn't work and the design stretched the look of the MM's horizontally, so this to me looks like a massive upgrade for their on-field presence. I don't like the hats (thanks, FJM), but I haven't liked them on any corps I've seen them on yet. Overall, I think it's an upgrade, and ... hooray for more white pants! We're brightening up the field, one corps at a time. Cesario has said, and I wholeheartedly agree, that one of the major visual differences between marching band and DCI is that corps, by virtue of being independent ensembles, have a vested interest in a "color" identity. Witness the pushback to the 2010 Cavaliers jackets when the corps felt that the new design had too much black, corrected in 2014. So, good for Cascades not going with the camoflaged look on the field (black / green) and picking some bold, bright colors to represent them. Mike

  8. If this was the same corps as 2013 I'd agree with you in this aspect. I think all the things you mentioned were put into place last year and it showed with their show design which was superb in 2014. I have a lot of faith in what staff last years revamp brought in. New corps, new look is fine by me. And they didn't just pick blue for the hell of it, they explained that they wanted to go back to their original colors. BUT I will agree that it's not my favorite uniform. We'll see what it actually looks like, but after their last look which I loved, this is a miss. Not the worst uniform I've ever seen, but definitely not my favorite. Not so bad that I cringe.

  9. Great show! Many individual, duets, small ensembles, Cadre percussion Ensemble, a mini corps COMPETITION, several great alumni acts all performing at better then April levels. Thanks for supporting this event. Very well attended. DA

  12. The story with spring training is half-true. The prior year (2011) we had done half of spring training in Casper, and then drove and did the second half in Indy (that was the year one of our busses crashed outside of Omaha, on our way to the new rehearsal site). For 2012, Troop got offered not one but two gigs in Indy for spring training (the Indy 500 parade and the opening of a new civil war exhibit for a museum). The corps admin also really loved the facilities and great deal we got with the 4H fairgrounds we housed at. Throw in the fact that the weather in Indy can be more forgiving than Wyoming, and the deal was sealed. The corps has done all days in Indy ever since.

  14. Congratulations to Rhythm X Winds on capturing the first ever championship for winds. Your show was tremendous and set the gold standard for the inaugural season. We were treated by some very talented performers today! Fantastic! In 1972, it was the Anaheim Kingsman who were crowned DCI's first ever champion. Today, Rhythm X made their own history in achieveing something that can never be repeated. Great job!

  16. Hey, I'm just going by Cavies' history. All their popular winning shows have taken this approach. In the end, I'm just speculating like everyone else. As for the logo, I don't think it looks "cheap" or any of that stuff that other people have mentioned. It looks pretty cool in fact. I just think it looks like the theme is about video games. That's all.

  17. Beer before a contest? In senior corps? How very shocking?

  18. Probably something to do with fit and uniform design as a whole. It keeps the number of uniform parts pretty low, and means you don't need a jacket design that goes all the way down to the waist. Helps make your marchers look taller and slimmer by artificially moving the waist higher, lengthens out the leg shape as well. Also creates much more form-fitting uniforms. Sorry, come from a family with fashion backgrounds. Hope that helps

  20. WGI recently began doing indoor brass as well. BK's been doing it for years... I think the first time I remember seeing them was around the first time I auditioned for the very first time, and that was way back in 05. They're expanding now. At any rate, I know a ton of horn players who have not only fallen in love with WGI, but have managed to get involved. Cymbal players can be pretty ######, and that's the way a lot of wind players find their way into WGI. Or they do guard. Hell, I know next to nothing about guard, but during WGI finals even I get hyped to see the world class groups perform. It's theatrical and beautiful. Drumlines have much more theme-centric shows than DCI. Anyone who says that DCI is trying to move towards WGI is probably right, but it's a cheap punchline, because DCI will never be able to come close to what WGI has managed to do in terms of theatrics and thematics. Tarps, props, drill, and music are all very meticulously integrated into shows. There have been very few DCI shows where I've thought the props were little more than, "hey, this is what our show is about!" and then they just kind of serve no purpose aside from that. It's not a knock on DCI (or DCA for that matter) at all. They're simply different activities. But as someone who had experience in both, I can honestly say that WGI caters to anyone who cares to give it a shot.

  21. I noticed in the show announcement it said music "inspired by" the MGM Gene Kelly musicals. Maybe there are a few Boerma originals in there that have a similar feel, but are not the actual MGM pieces. Kind of like LaDanza Pasillo in 1995...it was reminiscent of "Conga" by Miami Sound Machine, but was written by Scott Boerma and Taras Nahirniak...to great effect by the way!!!

  22. I'm guessing Singin' in the Rain is going make an appearance in the show, since that has to be the most well-known Gene Kelly MGM musical. Like the concept - looking forward to seeing the show!

  23. It was for sure. Probably didn't list it to avoid copyright issues. Sort of like when BD conveniently left off Welby's Paganini Variations from 2001. The funny thing on that is I contacted designers about the 2001 ballad and was told it was original. Guess that's a way around usage laws. Anyway, go Scouts!

  24. Most corps now require hats and sunglasses during rehearsals. Does keep the eyes from getting messed up by the sun exposure, and the hats also keep the facial muscles from getting tightened up, making it harder for the kids to play. Does lead to some funny tan lines by the end of summer, but it's better than getting your face and eyes messed up. Guard is the one section of the corps that doesn't require stuff like this, because a hat would really limit their upward vision during equipment work.

  27. Agreed. Also an endurance athlete, having more than 30 marathons & 20 ultra-marathons completed. Observe the clothing of athletes who compete in the Badwater Ultramarathon-135 miles run in the summer from Death Valley to Whitney Portals [elv. 8360]. Most elect to be covered head to toe in white. I heard Bart Yasso speak at an expo and he had photos of his "burnt" skin from the 1989 event, before it was customary to completely cover oneself. It was not sunburn, but literally the extreme heat coming off the pavement cooking his legs. That's why they run on the white stripe: so their shoes do not melt!!! http://wicked.is/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2011-Badwater-Ultramarathon-23.jpg

  28. I never thought I'd see the day when the Bluecoats, Spirit, Glassman, Troopers etc.... would even beat the Scouts, but they did. I've been friends with Gregg Auby for over 20 years and I've messaged him numerous times about numerous things. Getting the Scouts back to being not just competitive, but highly competitive is the goal 100%, and I'm happy about that. It'd never be as quick as everyone would like, but I feel much better about this staff change than the previous one. Hopefully we'll get some consistency, and continuity in the staff.

  29. I agree 100%. They've been searching for an identity since Scott left. One of the unique things under Scott Stewart was that the staff was pretty much 99% former Scouts. They didn't need to explain it to anyone because everyone already knew. In '96, I think the only staff member who was not an alum was either Taras Nahirniak (sp?) or Jeff Moore. Can't remember which. Don't get me wrong, I think Scott had rubbed too many people the wrong way with his attitude and it was time for him to go. I appreciated that attitude at the time, but it's easy to say "screw the judges, we play for the fans" when you're still drawing top-end talent and placing well. This is now the 6th complete staff turnover (give or take a few guys) in 13 years (averaging every 2 years at this point) and still no identity in sight. That once powerful brand has now been turned into a cookie-cutter DCI "also ran" corps. I never thought I'd see the day when I could say with begrudging confidence that the freakin Bluecoats are more likely to win a championship before the Scouts will.

  30. It certainly is the reality of the situation. I remember calling my brother in '01 when they finished 11th. We were utter shock. The thought of the Scouts not being in the top 6 was inconceivable. Then we chose to go to quarter finals in 2002 to make sure we saw the Scouts. 2003-06 were trying to find a brand in my opinion. Keep the Scouts history but place higher. Below par in my opinion in design expect for 05 in my opinion. The bottom dropped out in 07, and it's been a struggle to fight their way back since 05. I never ever ever thought that it would be this hard of a struggle. I never thought I'd see the day when the Scouts would be offering a reduced rate for someone that could throw down some double G's, but I guess it is what it is. I'm happy with the staff changes this year. I hope we don't have to hear Malaga or Malequena again to tell us that they're still the Scouts. I'd like a show announcement soon. I'd love a great show design. I thought a Kenton/Ellis show would be great. I want my favorite corps back. I want some cool grooves from the drum line, and a powerful horn line and some screaming soloists, and a return to the top six. Too much to ask?? Who knows. I was part of the hype in 07-09 here, and I'm ever hopefull now. Sorry for the length.... Rant over

  31. I think the important point is that I quite clearly care about the state of the corps within the activity. I'm just done sugar-coating and am to the point of speaking frankly and being honest about the reality of the situation. If this year doesn't live up to even reasonable expectations, they are looking at once again dropping out of finals. That's unacceptable. You don't have to like the messenger...but this is the reality of the situation.

  32. This is caring? Anyway, if our corps is mediocre, and you don't want to belong, take 1996 off your signature, get rid of your jacket and #### off. You probably don't stay in touch with any of your brothers, that won't be an issue. Why don't you just move on. There's a great 2015 Colts thread going on, hand out there.

  34. Get over yourself. You wrote comments criticizing something that is an opinion and started a nasty war of words with everyone since not a single person remotely agreed with you.You didn't take anyone to task, you said "should be good enough for 11th place." It was simply a weak comment by someone that clearly doesn't care about their former corps.

  35. Scouts have hardly fallen to a shameful state. Many corps have fallen from past heights and its a cyclical process for many corps. (SCV and PR were consistently top 3 corps at one point). Not to mention great corps that are no longer in existence. Give them credit and let's see what they come up with this season first.
