  1. "See, here's another reason to move drum corps indoors. How can we do effective design if we can't roll around on the ground and kick up a bunch of dust?" -George Hopkins (a parody)

  2. Yes, it was an unfortunate decision. Like the breast cancer show, I'm sure GH is likely regretting his decision. Or maybe not! Move on! Change! Life is short! Yet, in context, would it have changed their placement had demand and execution been judged equally, as Brasso contends? And would the decision to go all black have been justified had GH pulled the MM's together and voted democratically? (As if that would even be possible.) "Return the power to the performers?" I still contend they have all of it all along. Design does not stand alone.

  4. "May???????" IIRC, in defense of C2, this is not a retreaded Cadets program from the past that I'm aware of.... but the Cabs "may" have an edge? Umm... the proper term there is that they "do".

  6. Different opinions I guess. To me, the drill and music isn't really on the level of either the Cabs or Bucs. And when I say that I mean the difficulty. As for the Cabs, sure they have a lot of drill between the 30s, but that doesn't mean it's easy, if that's what you meant. Close interval drill, which seems to be a Cabs thing this year, is pretty difficult. And the Cabs brass and persussion book is very complex. Their brass book might even be a little too complex, since it seems they're having a hard time cleaning it. Overall, Hawthorne and Reading have more demanding shows, in my opinion.I'm not talking about their program in regards to the staff and the the kids out there. Capability isn't a question here. I just don't think Cadets2 have a 1st or 2nd place show this year. But it's still their best year by far. I wouldn't be surprised if they take 1st within the next 5 years. But not this year.

  7. For those that are making the treak to Rochester and those watching the live feed the biggest disappointment in Minnesota Brass's show is that you'll only get to see it two more times live. Regardless of placement it's one of those shows that you'll love to watch over and over. It's a tantelizing seamless production from beginning to end with maddening melody and captivating harmonic. It has all of the right ingredients to give you goose bumps and the chill's.

  8. we don't know that too loud by accident wasn't penalized without a judge saying yes or no. for all we know Bucs could have had a higher score but the volume created an issue. pretty much, little isn't allowed. based on what we've seen and heard in both circuits, they let it go. i'm sure DCA's rules mirror DCI's on usage. in most cases, I don't think they use it to add volume. They use it to add depth and range, sounds or pitches not able to be achieved by brass instruments such a low end patches to give the sound more bottom.

  10. and this was shown in the corps' blackest hour by imposing a uniform which diluted the effect of some of the corps' strengths and highlighted some weaknesses.

  13. I am wholly amused that not only did someone pick up on this, but also that another person alerted me to it so that I would come look. Haha. Carry on kids. That roof will stay closed during DCI always. They do open and close it occasionally during games. I bet they won't anymore though.

  14. Yep. Also the curtains will keep that from ever happening. Once they are up- it's not opening.

  15. Also goes to show that they can open and close the roof very quickly. The thunderstorms in central Indiana (and Ohio!) have been more severe now than in August. I admit I would have missed the A/C, but it is possible to open and close the roof on relatively short demand apparently.

  17. As it has ALWAYS been...which as much as this is brought up . it's like pointing out the obvious about most things taught by adults to any youth. Even other judged activities. what;'s the point.

  18. Yes you can and should. Everyone knows the design is created by adults, so please save some key stokes by reminding us just about every time you make another post. Were you ever a priest in a previous life who keeps on repeating the same comments several times during an extremely long homily? Time to get back to my suggestion during our time together at the Crusaders Spring Fling that you initially used.

  19. And yet, as I mentioned several pages ago, the years that the Devils were ranked lowest, 1991-93, were years that the percussion line was scoring lower than the other sections of the corps. Markedly lower. And their GE score suffered because of percussion. Show design was not the issue. In 1994, when they returned to the top, it was percussion, a PERFORMANCE caption, which markedly improved, bringing GE up with it. I am sorry, but these are the numbers.

  20. YES!!!! Absolutely, 100%, with no hesitations YES! This three night average thing is ludicrous. If your caption is good enough to win 99% of your shows, then they should be good enough to win on the night that matters most. If they can't, then they don't deserve the caption award. It's absurd to me that a corps who doesn't win their caption on finals night could somehow be given a trophy for it. At least with the Jim Ott Award this year, Crown won by a tenth and Cadets won by a tenth, so they were essentially even for finals night and it truly was a winner take all occasion. The way it should be.

  26. The term "thunderous goo" was coined on DCP early in 2010, the second year that electronics were allowed in DCI, to describe the horrible use of bass synthesizer which every corps seemed to be doing, and doing excessively, to make themselves sound louder. It was so prevalent that some people here wondered whether corps would soon drop their tuba sections. (There's a good post from around that time by Bruckner8 on the science of acoustics and the number of tubas that a corps needs for proper balance.) Personally, I find it hard to listen to quite a few DCI recordings from 2009-2012, because the great brass chords kept being overrun by that awful noise. No reason you should know that, of course. Corps have since become more judicious in their electronic use, so the term has been used less frequently in these parts of late.
