  2. Hey all, I just got contracted for Madison on Lead Sop today, and I think the alumni and fans will all love this year’s show. Arguably one of the most demanding Lead books I’ve ever seen from any corps too, quite a chop buster!

  3. I didn't miss your point at all Stu. I simply don't agree with you're opinion on this matter and chose to take the higher ground. Let's take this offline as it will only lead to a disagreement. The choices of others, especially in a time of war are not ours to judge, certainly not yours or mine as we weren't present. Thanks though.

  5. I sometimes forget that a lot of folks from the NE and Mid-West post here and have a lot of Germanic roots (because I live in the deep south where very few Germans live.) I love it here but it's not exactly common for people to speak German unless it's at the VW plant. In fact, my two German friends at work and I will Skype each other in German when we want to talk trash about someone and don't want them to know what we're actually saying.

  6. You do realize that Joe Roach leaving was announced at the beginning of October? This bit of news is more then four months old (publicly) and known longer then that to those who follow the corps. You can find the article mentioning his departure (and thanking him) on Cavaliers.org. Dont worry Hook’em you can remain standing.

  9. Except if the instructors / staff say anything negative about another corps, they will be disciplined by DCI.

  11. Let's drop this in the name of peace and try to agree on the following: George Hopkins was likely an orgre while director of the Cadets!!

  12. I was surprised to learn that the Amish and Mennonites have historically made up a relatively small percentage of the overall PA Dutch population. All sorts of groups, like the Moravians and so forth. Brenda and I went to a service last summer at the Moravian church in Bethlehem, PA. Wonderful. A very relaxed, friendly vibe. The Moravians are known for their emphasis on music, and in particular their trombone choirs. This service featured two excellent trombone players.

  13. Did that multiple times. Orange Line from Landover in. Drove round-trip lots of times, depending on my schedule. An adventure. LOL. The last year or so, I started catching the MARC train at the BWI stop, into Union Station, then two different Metro lines to Rosslyn where I worked. Often would catch the 5:40 AM train from BWI. Next stop down...Odenton... the train would fill up to standing-room capacity. At not even 6 AM. Absolutely nuts. Between that commute, and the several years afterward when I had a driving gig taking clients to and from the DC area (airports, meetings, wherever).... I probably know 10-12 ways, at least, to get to and from. None of them a picnic.

  14. There's a lot of that kind of background unfortunately. My grandfather was a Jewish scientist from Austria. It was only in the last few years of my fathers life that I was finally told that he was working in Oakridge from 1942 to 1947 and that our last name had been changed in order to get out of Germany. Though the atrocities of war are terrible, the history they sometimes speak to give us a robust personal journey.

  15. We were going to drive into DC and hit up the Smithsonian but alas, it closed the day we got in and reopened the day we left. Considering that Britt is 20 years younger than I am, she was pretty gung-ho about just heading up to DC anyways and seeing whatever we could see. I'm far more practical and middle age has brought out my road rage.

  16. Visited Germany in 2006 when my nephew was in the U.S. Army there. The upper part of Bavaria... Nurnberg, Wurzburg, thereabouts. I would love to get back someday. Andrew is now the band director at Downingtown East H.S. in PA!!! As an aside... Johns Hopkins is the famed medical institution in Baltimore. Since the word "Hopkins" is in there, this should keep the thread on track.

  17. In 2013, if Heartliner from Germany had made DCA Class A finals, or was allowed to do an exhibition at that show, I was planning to announce them in German and English. Channeling my inner Wes Hobby.... LOL... he used to announce the various French-Canadian corps in English and French. Unfortunately, Heartliner was not in the night show. I would have needed help from a Heartliner staffer on the German. LOL. My dad's side of the family is German.... but I gotta admit, I have pretty much forgotten most of the German language I learned in high school.

  18. If you get a chance and have never been there, try and swing by Munich (especially at night.) It's pretty stunning. My favorite place as a very young man was actually Cornwall, UK. Even almost 37 years later, my memories of living there for a few months are quite vivid. Oh, and GH hired a gentleman named Andrew German for brass staff one year. Now we're on topic because I tied in German and GH. It's like the 6 degrees of George Hopkins!

  19. We are going to the Black Forest area in southern Germany this spring, flying in to Stuttgart, while visiting our daughter in London. Our daughter's partner is a Greek gal, but her family moved to Germany when she was small, so she was brought up there.

  20. In a very watered down way, High German is mostly spoken in central and southern Germany. I know Yiddish is a sub-dialect. Low German is basically northern and coastal. I'm from Hamm which is northwest close to Munster so my dialect is low German. It's basically a consonant thing. My father was from Berlin and seemed to be more of a mix of standard and high German. OH!! George Hopkins (for topic sake)

  21. We got PA German here which is different from German German 😉. But then you have the high and low German which never was explained to me very well. Supposedly PA German hasn’t changed as much over the centuries but not sure. Took German in HS and college thinking that was my heritage. Took DNA test last year and found out I’m over 3/4 UK.... oops

  22. I remember when I lost interest in who wins boxing world title belts. It was just after the Marvin Hagler v Sugar Ray Leonard fight. Hagler pounded Sugar Ray, pummled him, beat the ever loving snot out of him throughout the entire 12 round match. When the final bell rang it was so obvious that even Sugar Ray himself hugged Hagler, and the TV close up of that hug showed Sugar Ray mouthing the words, "You've won; man you beat me." Yet.... When the scoring from the judges was tallied it was Sugar Ray announced as the winner. Subjective scoring, not objective pounding hits, but subjective scoring put Sugar Ray on top. After that I still enjoyed the competitiveness and the sport itself, but no longer really cared who was The Boxing Champion Of The World! So why do I mention this? Well, that same change of interest in who wins the world title in another 'subjectivly judged' contest also occured for me with DCI after the '88 season and was solidified after '89. From then on I came to truely accept that the Champion Of The World in DCI was based shearly on the collective opinions of subjective observation. And while I still enjoy the competitiveness within the activity, from '90 on I quite frankly no longer cared who won the DCI title each season.

  23. I am going to add 2006 BD. Probaly won't be the most popular choice in this thread. I remember BD firing on all cylinders to start the season going unbeaten until San Antonio when the Cavs finally caught them. Think BD beat the Cavs the first 3-4 head to head match ups. Though i could be wrong.

  25. Earlier this week we announced that an anonymous donor would put in a $10,000 match if we could raise $10,000 by Saturday, February 9th. Troopernation showed up and did twice that! With a late breaking donation from the Tate Foundation, we are excited to announce that our tally now sits at $30,765!! Read the rest […] View the full article

  26. I think Cadets everything is maturing. Regardless of placement I love the team they have right now and I'm super excited to see what they put out with some actual time to develop their product. They really made some lemonade with lemons that could have been very bitter otherwise.

  27. Today, Arsenal BoD has notified its 2019 members that DCI has reversed its position and has accepted Arsenal for participation in the San Antonio Regional. The communication from Arsenal speaks of them as a drum and bugle corps but does not specify whether they will appear as a competitor or exhibitor, whether they will be included in the Open Class or in SoundSport aspects of the Alamodome show. There is not a specific mention of the disruption of the "assessment" review by DCI to welcome the corps to touring although the Arsenal administration admits that changes have been made to the corps' structure while maintaining the aims of their original founder who resigned in the communication uproar in their outreach to Oregon Crusaders mms. The actual notice to Arsenal mms can be found on Arsenal's fb page. As of this hour and posting, DCI website's show information has yet to mention Arsenal as now appearing at San Antonio but that section of the DCI website has been consistently erratic and quite slow in making adjustments for many shows and corps. Corps news and announcements have ceased to be a usual Friday morning 11 am Eastern time regular on the DCI site as well for this off-season.

  29. 2019: I just want the Scouts to be the Scouts again...give the fans a visual and musical roundhouse kick to the face. The goal should be for every fan to walk out of a stadium saying, "they might not've won, but that was frickin' AWESOME!"

  30. Every year, without fail, the Madison Scouts thread turns into an out-of-control dumpster fire. Can't you wait until the previous years dumpster fire is reduced to ashes? It's only compounded by the fact that the chickens have come home to roost, competitively speaking.
