  2. Without being a blatherskite, I used From the Press box. file:///C:/Users/Owner/Downloads/1972recaps (2).htm Believe it or not, 72 was the first year I looked at, found a "contest" that had a large prelims, and found the Appleknockers.

  3. Not to mention there was no consistency between the VFW and AL rules, and then add in different sheets for shows like the World Open and it got to be very confusing. The World Open in 71, for example, had 30 points for GE, while VFW had 10. Plus the VFW had the 10-point Inspection and 10-point Cadence captions. On the plus side, we were tied for 1st in both Inspection and Cadence! šŸ˜€

  4. I don't know how *he* knew that, but it turns out the recaps for that event are on FromThePressbox.

  5. I think in 1983 or so, the Bridgemen were 11th or 12th overall, but first or second in drums.

  6. I saw that drum line a few times that year. Maybe the cleanest snareline I've ever seen and heard.

  7. Apparently discrepancies like this are fairly common in BOA. On the Horn Rank forums, someone pointed out that in this very same event, another Ohio band, Kettering Fairmont, finished 23rd in Music Performance but 43rd overall: a gap one bigger than the 19-placement difference I had noticed. Also in the same event, an Indiana band, Beech Grove, was 31st in Visual Performance but 49th overall, a difference of 18 placements, or just one shy of Grove City's disparity. Maybe the reason is that there are so many more competitors at the typical BOA event than at the typical DCI event.

  8. So I updated the fundraiser thread. Donate to "Team Old School" to initiate Free Drink Challenge. It will probably be Yuengling bottles and Coke or Pepsi, I'll have plenty I'm sure. Maybe wine as well, possibly burgers. Surf will be on early, so you won't miss your favorite corps or any of the show if you say hello. This drink challenge is not affiliated with any drumcorps, I am the sole sponsor of challenge, must be 21 or older, while supplies last. https://www.flipcause.com/secure/fundraiser/NjU1OTI=/38813

  9. I did. This is what is listed today on Cadets.org webpage. "FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Fees cover the cost of food, housing, world-class instruction, shuttles, uniforms, equipment, transportation and administrative needs. These can be paid online, through the mail or over the phone. The one-time audition/clinic fee is $200. Each full-weekend audition/clinic event and winter camp is FREE."

  11. So how many corps were ā€œpainfulā€ to watch at DCA? Asking for number and not names.

  12. Yep and Juniors broke with VFW to form DCI just as Seniors broke with AL to form DCA few years earlier. Seniors problem was judging and rules, not sure about the $$$$

  13. Yes true and the rules , especially given the times were something corps were done with. Corps felt they were for sure being held back.

  14. Exactly ! If your striving to have a competitive circuit which DCA is attempting to have . At some point you can not appreciate effort and it becomes painful to watch.

  18. If you only can watch the best of the best more power to you. Some of us enjoy the effort all the corps bring.

  19. First marched in drum corps in 1981...and times have changed. Participating in DCI did two things for me -- made me a better musician and resulted in new friendships and relationships. Those two valuable things still occur today for members so I am still "in" and enthusiastic. And supportive. That being said, my opinion is that WGI is rat poison to true drum corps; the overuse, emphasis, and discussion of props is silly : use of amplification for anything other than mallet instruments in the pit and a minor dose of vocal overlay now and again is distracting and artificial, and that the true art of marching and maneuvering has disappeared. Oh -- and general effect scores are a bunch of BS, and way - overweighted. But... I ain't leavin the activity as a fan or as an alumni. Still a good expreience for the marching members -- oh yeah -- cell phones should be banned on tour. šŸ™‚

  20. Deadspin had actually a pretty good review of this proposal. MLB is coming from the stance that because of advanced training and technology they donā€™t need as many players going through the minors as before, and kind of ignores the whole baseball-as-entertainment aspect. For DCI, no matter what ā€œpopular perceptionā€ is Open Class isnā€™t a formal feeder system for World Class. OC has a tremendous number of retained members and age outs too. Kids may move on to other bigger corps, but if nothing else, competitive results show there is considerable overlap between the divisions. Mike

  21. I actually think The Cavaliers will have an extremely good turnout. I was walking in the park this afternoon and I was listening to the hornlines warm up before Indy (I believe) and the structure is incredible. However, if they want to go further and beyond... they need to bolster up on their visual aspect. They are improving, but they need to work on the fundamentals of marching technique and guiding. Not saying they aren't, but it was lacking compared to the music aspect. *Note* they did an amazing job at cleaning up the drill as the season went on. If they put a little focus on that... BAM! The future turnout at each camp will be immeasurable. That being said.... I firmly believe the corps is going to attract a lot of amazing talent for this season. Heck, I love the direction the corps is moving towards.

  22. I donā€™t expect that the top 6 will have any recruitment problems. If anything, it will be quite competitive. SCV is not a shoe in for the top three, and Crown, BAC, and Cavies will be hoping for a medal. Regarding Cavies and the death of Don Warren, Iā€™m not sure it would have all that much of an impact on recruitment. Regarding Cavies being the only remaining all male corps and gaining young men who would have auditioned for Madison, thatā€™s hard to tell. In Indy I sit with some seasoned Madison folks, mostly alumni, and there are some concerns regarding talent going elsewhere, but Cavies was not mentioned specifically. My hope for Cadets is that by making it affordable to audition (travel expenses only), they will attract talent. In our world of arm chair quarterbacking, itā€™s easy to say last year was an off year, but kids deciding where to march may need more convincing. For a long shot prediction, I am thinking Pacific Crest could have a good audition season. This past yearā€™s show was enjoyable which is nothing new for the corps, but it had a certain sophistication to it and an upward trend is a possibility.
