it could be innovative...by bringing MUSIC back to the forefront of the activity.

remember first they zigged, then they zagged

For a split second I had hope based on your comment above......TTPS is one of my favourite shows. Thing is, I agree with George about not redoing a show like that. I was disappointed when they brought back Rocky Point Holiday in 2003. The 2003 version paled in comparison to 2002/2003. Redoing TTPS just leaves the door open for the same thing to happen. Then again, Phantom proved me wrong with Spartacus so who knows.

I am not excited about Cadets for 2011 based on the musical selections listed. I can't listen to Sing Sing Sing without thinking of all the other corps that have done it and how it always ended up being the musical piece where brass members heads start bopping up and down and the audience starts clapping along. I know a lot of people like to clap along but this after all is the Cadets. They WERE the innovators in DCI for a very long time.

Lately I find them to be more and more like an over decorated cake. The concept starts out well but they just can't stop adding "icing."

I think it sucks.

In my view, since 2005 the Cadets have gone through 3 different design philosophies. 2005 and 2006 was super-innovative, take every risk possible, total Gesamtkunstwerk. The reception was competitively very successful and popularly mixed in 2005, generally negative in 2006. But at least these shows TRIED to stand for something.

2007 and 2008, to me, was "back to basics" (new-old style uniforms, late 90s drill) with a thin veneer on top (narration) that allowed Hopkins et al. to claim that they were being incredibly innovative, when in fact they were selling the same stuff as a decade before.

2009, 2010, and from the looks of it, 2011 are what I would classify as "pure pandering": misguidedly groping for what will make people clap, disregarding competitive success, and often failing to either garner applause or challenge for a title. 80s pop and "Sing, Sing, Sing"? That is bush league in terms of show design, in my opinion. Why hasn't the Cadets design team been able to make a cohesive, well designed, and entertaining vehicle in 5 years?

Reaching for "competitive success" on sheets that value little else has resulted in many fans being alienated by current show design. The pendulum swings too far in both directions, but this "pandering" could be it swinging closer to the middle.

A sizable group of Legacy fans won't mind a little pandering. It's about time, in my dino opinion.

They had Power Point back in 1992???

Yes.

But G7 Power Point presentations weren't invented yet.

1993 Phantom Regiment .... gotta check that out. I said in my other post that it's not been long enough, then I realized it's been 17 years. Even with that many years passing by, it still seems too soon. PR was just that good, just that powerful and just nuts in their arranging. I can't see any corps topping it, but more power to the Cadets if they actually do.
Yeah, Regiment blew the doors off with that one. Staked a nigh-insurmountable claim to Death Hunt while they were at it.

Actually, the title is a "working" title ... more of an idea around a theme ... from what I heard on the call.

Honestly, when Hop went to a Powerpoint slide titled "To Tame the Perilous Skies" during Sunday's (September 19, 2010 -- cough cough) conference call , my heart rate went up ... 1992 is one of my all time favorite Cadets’ shows  …

The reason Hop gave for not doing it was "too many DCI folks (fans, staff, etc) say a Corps shouldn’t re-do a show like that." Guess I’m in the minority when it comes to revisiting musical selections …

It is tough to believe it’s been 18 years …

Fixed  ...

Note to self, no posting at working
