From 2014:
"Changes are being made to the General Effect (GE) judging sheets for Drum Corps International (DCI) this summer. Now both GE judges have the same sheet, which allows them to comment on visual and musical effects."

So this goes to show that visual judges are still divas. :)

Part of the problem is there are truly only 4-5 judges good enough and experienced enough to judge a total GE sheet. Everyone else plays to their strengths and comfort zone, hence the wide gap in visual and music, The reality is some of the folks who could really do it justice are teaching and designing these days. Its a good idea moving forward, but when the best and brightest are on the other side of the fence, its not a reality at this point. IMHO.. DCI needs time to train the judges to use this sheet and give the corps their fair due in the judging process.Until then, be prepared for more scores like you saw tonight.

it appears I was wrong and the GE captions are indeed blended into 1...

here is the thread on it from June 2014: http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/index.php/topic/159757-general-effect-1-2/

IMO..this has now taken an already vague caption of GE in the first place and now convoluted it even further...

Blending both GE captions is a terrible idea. This recap is proof that this system is broken & needs to be fixed. Let drum guys judge drums, horn guys horns, & visual guys visual.

Some of this can be traced back to the halfazz panels that DCI utilizes for half their summer competition season now, imo. Some of these judges are getting their first look or 2nd look and assignment to judge these Corps this week ( with half the season gone ) Remember, we've had early season shows with no Brass judge at all... no Percussion judge, at all.... no Guard judge, at all... in many of these shows in the first half of the summer competition season. Now DCI brings in bigger panels, with new judging sheets, completely new judging caption allotments from just a few days ago, newer judges, and now we have caption scores that have judges all over the lot with one another in what they are seeing and hearing.

Well, with halfazz panels early in the season, perhaps we should have seen it all coming regarding the head scratching caption scores we are getting now with the expanded, full panels, and with different, expanded captions now being utilized less than a month before the end of the competition season.

If fans craved " volatility " in the scores from nite to nite..... Well, they got it now. ( haha!)

The should be . Finally . You cant tell me corps A does everything better than corps B .

Its just not possible ,Some have better design ,Some are cleaner , SOme are more exciting .

CALL THE SHOW... NOT THE UNIFORM.

Good JOB !

Whatever the case here is some truth- Phantom does have some design flaws... The narration and overall theme seems forced on the audience instead of allowing one to enjoy an idea transitioning to another motif. They've made some positive changes and this is a much better offering, but BStars, Scouts, BAC, Crossmen, BK all do have shows that are well constructed. I can see with the caliber of corps tonight having trouble deciding which corps has better GE elements, but in the end- it's one show and 1 judge!!! Just saying... On another note- Strong statement BK, keep it up

I disagree that this means they should be judging more similarly to each other. They even mentioned with the change that they will still choose a Visual judge and a Music judge to judge the caption together. Even Cesario said the judges chosen would bring their backgrounds and experience to inform their observations and weighting of that background in judging GE. So they are still expecting them to judge the group totally different from each other but allowing them the opportunity to now comment on the other caption and critique that other caption even though they don't have their background in that caption.
