San Antonio Showdown

Good show yesterday and IMO probably the right winner. Surprised that Crown were ahead of BD though? Don't get that one but there it is.

Looks like BAC might have a problem making finals, Ooops!

Are the population and demographics of the Northeast what they were 30-60 years ago? Absolutely not,

While its true the northeast is not growing in population, ... the northeast is still the largest population section of the country. Its why the midwest based Big10 recently expanded into NJ, and the southern based ACC recently expanded into New England, New York. Its why the NFL, MLB, NBA, etc have multiple teams in NY/NJ,and why TV advertisers pay more for advertising air time minutes on TV than anywhere else in the country, etc. Look, I'm not saying that Corps should make Finals based upon their home base of fundraising. I'm just pointing out that DCI can not long survive without strong DCI presence in the heavily populated N.E., NY, NJ corridor..... especially if DCI's goal is to someday ever get their Championships back on national TV, that for decades it had on national TV, when they had such strong competitive Corps from this region. DCI can not compress, and become more of a regional activity, and think this is a model for future growth of Corps, fans. It isn't. Real, substantive, growth only comes about to where there is emphasis. As such, there is far more DCI concentration in Texas now, ( and throughout the southwest ) than in the still heavily populated northeast, that once was a hotbed of Drum Corps. I'm surprised that this apparently seems like some sort of new revelation to some DCP'ers today.

Sure... and we could have 3 Super Bowl Champions, 3 World Series Champions, 3 Stanley Cup Champions, 3 NCAA Women's Basketball Champions, 3 NCAA Men's Basketball Champions, 3 Heavyweight Div. Boxing Champions, All Olympic event competitions will have 3 Champions, World Cup Soccer each year will have 3 Champions, etc. If we can dumb down the top insofar as selecting the ultimate ChampionS , lets consider going all the way with this, have full blown DCI socialism, and give every Corps a " participation " medal of equal value, equal worth.o have

HA!

I'm about as far from a Socialist as one can get. Very competitive individual who believes in survival of the fittest. If I recall, our local high school band competitions used to have just 3 awards. Something like -

Divine

Majestic

Superior

(Everyone went home happy)

It's pretty easy... Pennsylvania is not in New England... neither is New York for that matter.

Let's settle this New England flap....

New England is an area which comprises six states of the northeastern United States: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.[a] It is bordered by the state of New York to the west and south, and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec to the northeast and north, respectively. The Atlantic Ocean is to the east and southeast, and Long Island Sound is to the south.

Probably a good discussion for next "off-season," but I've been pondering this condition for some time. A logical, next progression in judging MIGHT be, awarding more than one top medal. It's almost blasphemous to many, but under such a change we could eventually read this headline:

Three corps received GOLD Medals at this year's DCI World Class Championships in Indianapolis. They are Carolina Crown, Bluecoats, and Blue Devils (all just used for illustration).

The suggestion of that headline is ridiculous, Fred...... this is America---the headline for last night should be "TWENTY-FOUR corps received GOLD Medals at this year's San Antonio Regional. Fourteen Thousand fans roared in approval."

I have to add that I STILL think that the finest moment at San Antonio came last season when Pioneer had disastrous transportation troubles and struggled to pull into the stadium in time to take a 2-point penalty, perform after the Blue Devils (and warmly received by the crowd), and came out in dead last. That shouldn't be called Alamo bravery by far, but it shows the leadership and gumption that I look for in the leaders and performers of one of our corps.

Your "almost blasphemous" comment rattled my thought stream back to that fine moment.

Thank you, Fred.

I don't necessarily disagree with that. I think the Northeast needs a more focused tour, for one thing. Despite the easier driving distances, the three shows in and around Boston near July 4 are the only real concentration of shows in the NE. The later CYO show in Boston seems to be problematic logistically from a tour perspective.

There are no shows in southeastern NY (incl. Long Island), none in CT, VT or Maine, a single Open Class show in New Hampshire, and only 1 show in New Jersey. Admittedly, there are both a regular and a regional show in Allentown, and a TOC show in Chester, Pa. But as you say - presence is important, and often a result of appearance, and the northeast could be assisted by a better organized tour through the area.

And note, I'm not saying this because I personally want more shows to attend myself - I'm in central NJ, and I can get to Allentown & Chester as easy as anywhere else. But as long as there are ~30 million people in the NYC to Boston corridor, I agree with you Brasso that "presence" ... in one form or another ... should be a focus of DCI

Edit: I also think this is one area where YEA! does a good job, providing the primary competition organization in NJ (US Bands). Centralized organization of high school competitions, tied to DCI, is a great way to maintain that presence. I know US Bands extends beyond NJ, but I don't know if there are similar levels of penetration and coverage through the NE.

Its quite shocking really that more than one person on here did not know that Pennsylvania... and New York.... are not New England states.
