I'm here all day.

:)

Btw, loved Pacific Crest yesterday. Hoping they can shift up one more spot. They had completely stalled at this point last year, it's great to see them getting the credit they deserve! Think they can definitely build off of this into next year.

Well if Jeff Prospiere has BDB 12th in drums. They were 12th in drums.

And I am not even remotely surprised. My jaw was on the floor during their drum feature. That was top 10 quality.

Hmm. But you just said if Jeff P had them in 12th, they were 12th! If they were top 10 wouldn't he not have had them in 10th or better. Don't get upset, I'm just bustin your chops a bit. I saw your earlier support for BAC. Thanks for that. I know it is much appreciated.

Yep. We were a little worried. But, then the scores came out and WOW! I'm hoping they can do it again today.

Lol I know. Just saying their chops and writing are so impressive.

And best of luck to Boston. Semis can be magical and really interesting. I'm pulling for them.

Some other stuff from the Cinecast

1. Will Pitts is really coming into his own as a commentator. I thought this was the most comfortable he's looked on camera, and he had clearly done his homework in terms of what he wanted to say about each group. I sort of think he's leaving Rondo and Dennis behind in terms of what he brings to the broadcast.

2. The sideline reporter, sorry forgot her name, also did a good job this year. She has obviously sincere responses to a lot of the performances and did a nice job of making the performer interviews not seem awkward. Kudos to her for picking 11th place Academy as her favorite moment of the night.

3. DCI badly needs to find 2-3 more Will Pitts to add to the broadcast. Younger former participants who've started on a relevant career and can bring better insights and commentary into what each group is doing. Someone from the color guard world would be particularly appreciated.

4. The weakest part of the broadcast is always the reactions to the performances. Rondo: "wow, brass gave me goosebumps. Dennis how about the drums?" Dennis: "Drums were great". Pitts: "And what a guard". It gets old after the 15th repetition. I think they need to be less afraid to say negative things. Tell the audience which section you didn't think was up to par. If you think the drums were so strong, tell us which part of the show really sold you. Etc.

5. Michael Klesch hands down won Best Interview. Both for his substantive comments about why Crown went with a merciful ending, and his stand-up comedy about how Crown could have done the campfire farting scene from Blazing Saddles, but Roxanne won out.

Pete Weber from SCV took a clear second place. It's pretty awesome hearing the writer of the year's best drill talking about how important it is for him that they get the music right.

6. Bluecoats' soloist's wink won the night. I wanted to see a sideline interview with that guy.

The sideline interviewer's first name is Trish. I feel like she was a guard member several years back, but I'm not sure.

Agreed about Pitts. Maybe should write material for the other two. And while I wouldn't object to negative comments, what I really want is specifics. For instance, on more than one occasion in the past, DeLucia has described Crown's percussion as a weakness, but no effort was made to explain to the audience why that is.

See, this is what is absolutely awful with the "no full recaps" garbage from DCI. We have no clue: there is zero accountability to judges, the system, etc. It's horrible and doesn't seem to stop any sort of real perceived "slotting" as was a major argument for passage. All it's done has caused mild confusion at best, and maybe annoyance and bitter disappointment at worst.

I've followed DCI less this season than I have since I first got into the activity in 90, and while I have my hands full a little bit with family stuff I attribute most of this to no real recaps. I used to follow scores & analyze recaps every evening after every show; I'd watch every live stream and do my own comparison to what I saw vs what some of the judges saw. This year I have little interest: living in San Diego there are very few opportunities for live shows, and it's hard to get into things with so little information out there from DCI. I'm sure I'm in the minority, and I suspected conversation might turn a little bit this week to the "hidden recaps" decision. I've seen some full recaps from people I know on drum corps staffs, but the whole disappearance of transparency in the system feels a lot more shady than perceived slotting (which didn't seem to go away, at least not in the Top 6) ever has.

I think you are assuming the judges don't see the recaps, and/or talk about them amongst each other. I mean, really, do you not think that every corps director is pouring over every detailed recap and voicing their disapprovals at every turn?

I really don't have enough experience in judging to know how everything works, or even is supposed to work, but the fact that there IS a lot of variance between judges and shows (at least to me) says that judges ARE judging what they see that night. We may or may not agree with their conclusions, but in my mind, that's really what they are paid to do.
