Out of everyone currently in the top 7, Mandarins are the only one that wasn't supposed to be here. They had their highest regional finish ever last night, they are four points higher than at this point last season, and their highest score ever in world class 90.013 (2022 finals night) is about to be obliterated. Phantom and/or Cadets passing them for 5th is not a diss or a bad thing. The simple fact that we are TALKING about those corps possibly passing Mandarins for 5th is a major accomplishment. Of everyone in the top 7, Mandarins have nothing to lose as again no one thought they would be here. They need to just let loose, throw everything and the kitchen sink at this show, and whatever happens, it's all good. Cause at the end of the of the day, anything higher than 10th at finals, is another record breaker in their corps history. Mandarins dominated Open class for years! It was only a matter of time before they rose, and with Freelancers and SCV gone from CCal, they're a natural replacement. Never in a million years did I think I would be a DCI Dad, but seeing my boy out there tonight, giving it his very best and bringing 14,000 to their feet, I wouldn't trade this feeling I have right now for anything. I hope all of you are just as proud as I am. I’m so glad to have seen your kids perform live. I was in the third row and two seats from the 50 yard line, and absolutely loved every moment of it. Cavies and Mandies melted my face off. Just absolute in your face, air pushing, sonic slicing madness. It was amazing. All of the parents of kids in the activity deserve to be extremely proud of the hard work their kids have put in. 5

Then they literally went dark with those black uniforms. I should look at the recaps from the last couple weeks of the season and see if their visual scores were affected by that change. I remember they were killing it in the performance captions while GE had hit a ceiling

In that it’s very different for its time. I don’t see Crown magically becoming as fierce and energetic as Inferno. The show doesn’t call for it. And I don’t see the GE judges rewarding this show any by the end of the season.

It’s not strange for Bloo right now, but who else is doing what they’re doing? I get wanting them to change things up, but I’ve noticed that we only really seem to demand this of the corps that have already proven themselves to be forward thinking and are now comfortable in their style. I totally get asking corps like Bloo and BD to think even further outside of the box and abandon their formulas, but honestly, why is it always on them? 3

I respectfully await your views and commentary 🙂 @MandarinMom I can understand your bias as a DCI mom of a marching Mandi. I’d love to hear more of your detailed critique, especially coming from such a profound and experienced adjudicator like yourself 🙄 Okay I’ll bite! First of all, again, I think the “you’re not a judge” pot shot is always an easy one to make. I’m a young part of the music education world and designing some. Am I an expert? HELL NO! Do I have some personal observations and opinions about the peak of the activity I am going to spend the rest of my life working in? Yes. I think I can. Just like you or anyone else. It’s so boring if we just silence ourselves from expressing what we see and hear Can Cadets finish 5th? Absolutely. They’re close. If they do it, it will be on the strength of their music performance captions and eeking out some more Music GE points. They’re playing amazingly well in brass and drums and move pretty well. The opener is amazing and the first ballad soloist is one of the best of the year. I like the show a lot. Do I think Mandarins and Phantom Regiment have better products? Yes. Can Cadets make changes to be more competitive with those two shows? Yes. But the foundation is weaker than those two. The theme and overall through thought is not very apparent besides “look how athletic we are” and the Atlas thing in the second ballad (I’ve read and watched all the videos before I get linked those). The pacing movement to movement is really jerky, especially into Corynorhinus. The drill makes them look small. The props are just there and look very much props for props sake, the transition of them into the Zimmer ballad and lack of interaction with them is not very well conceived. Versus PR and Mandarins who IMO have the best prop usage and integration of the season. They have a ton of variety, orientations, effective staging within the drill, and effect. Those two shows also flow VERY well musically and visually and feel like a complete and total thought from conception through what you see on the field. The intent is always incredibly clear. I like Cadets show a lot, but I have the personal opinion that it’s a 7th place show this season. I’ll also take it over anything since 2014. There you go 🫡 9

In small part because we at Vanguard lost our way at the moment. 😞
