The ‘smart’ is in limited quantity and there in lies the critical flaw.

not in SCV's case

You have touched a nerve.   Rant incoming, not aimed at you but on the idea that it is ok to field an incomplete show early in the season.

<<Rant on>>

Point is that participants in “Marching Music’s Major League” should be able, after 3+ weeks of spring training, put a full-length show on the field.  The fans are paying money to see them.   If one went to the Broadway premiere of Phantom of the Opera & they stopped midway through the second act, what would the reaction be?

The paying audience deserves a full length show from day one of season.  Yes it will be cleaned and stuff added throughout the summer, but the bones need to be present from the get-go.   Timing penalties should be enforced from the beginning of the season.

<<Rant off>>

the key IMO and we see it every year.....have the skeleton out there. add, fill in, tweak....but don't waste weeks of rehearsing the super dooper secret special ending that gets performed for 2 weeks tops. this method works.....BD proves it every #### year. in 18 SCV had the ending, they hold off on putting it out there for a while. and yeah Phantom 08, but how many other times did the super secret special ending actually pay off? you lose so much time you would be cleaning other stuff

Wonder what percentage of people only go to Championships week and don’t FLO. IOW percentage who wouldn’t know the show was changed. Or those who saw the “old” show don’t remember that it was different… or really give a rats hindquarter anyway. “Oh that’s different 🥱

How much does it really add to a show… or score 😈

Bloo in ‘16 worked with the blind flag tosses coming over the slides … Bloo ‘19 didn’t with the Hey Jude ending (IMO).

even then it wasn't a massive change. it was just added to what was there.

again that was an addition, not a totally new ending.

and in 19 yes they kept changing the ending for weeks

There is a difference between changing or adding a bit of drill/music, and completely dumping the last 2 minutes for something different.

BITD when you dumped it wasn’t something that was planned all season, it was because show as written wasn’t working.  Ultimate example is 1976 Madison.

I still believe and I know i'm not alone, that the Bloo's first ending in 2019 was classy, complete and made more sense than the bombastic HEY JUDE ending that changed to compete with BD's surge as the season wore on..in this case, sometimes less is better..imo....peace
