  5. that's the problem...it's business, not entertainment. Win at all costs, even if the fan's don't appreciate it. I'd love to see BD go undefeated...with a show that has melodies and is more fan oriented. There are leaders and followers. If the leader is doing "bando" shows, the followers will also (wide brush, but it's true to a certain extent). If the leader was doing fan favorite shows, the followers would tend to shift in that direction.

  6. Or GH, unlike many in drum corps has this thing called a "sense of humor."

  7. I am not a big fan of the Blue Devils, but last year their brass was phenomenal. They were so in tune, it was just sick. Even at the Atlanta regional, I remember the one guy sitting next to me muttered, while the Blue Devils were finishing their closer, "These guys are just on a totally different level." And that about summed it up for me. Not a fan of their visual program last year by a LONG shot...the mirrors really didn't impress me much...but their sound...man...they are good, and that's why they won the title. Phantom had a lot of tuning problems, but still gave me shivers at times. I would rather a corps sacrifice a little bit of volume to produce a cleaner, more in-tune sound. Overblowing it and all is exciting, yeah, drum corps can never be to loud, but if it's out of tune, I'll cringe.

  8. I need more information on this. I am not sure what the following means: Does this mean you will send email blasts to your lists for other corps? That you will help other corps make their own lists out of the goodness of your heart? That you will charge other corps to make a list for them? That you will charge other corps to use your email list? That you are trying to create a list for all of DCI, so you want supporters of all corps? When multiple corps are competing for the same money, how can fans of other corps that gave you their info be sure they will get accurate information? Also, I don't see how you can depict this solution as solving the problem you presented. The problem is that people are getting hit over the head from multiple angles. The solution you provided says that all communication from Crown will only come one time. You have no control over emails/texts/facebook posts from other entities. If we sign up, will YEA stop emailing us? Also, I don't really believe that Carolina Crown would not update their facebook page requesting votes, as this idea claims, if it was in the running for money. No one would give up that marketing opportunity. I also bet the new email list would be used to advertise shows and other Crown-sponsored events, thus increasing the email traffic you receive from a service that is supposed to do the opposite. There has already been a push to push individual services to the corps level, thus benefiting only 1 corps instead of DCI: the above slide is from the G7 presentation. My worry is that Carolina Crown will attempt to become the official social network marketing arm of DCI, and will have control over which corps is promoted and which corps are not promoted. Perhaps some of my concerns could be addressed.

  9. Hi all, Normally we post in the DCA forums, but after a recent survey we conducted, we are hoping to get the support of DCI Open class corps and fans to help us. We are attempting to start an Open class corps in Austin, TX. Our application to the Pepsi Refresh grant program has been accepted, and all we need are your votes to help us get the startup funds for this group. Please Vote to Start an Open-Class Drum Corps in Austin http://www.pepsirefresh.com/AustinStarsPAA Thank you for your consideration!

  10. What would make my year? If, at Championships week, the Blue Devils ditch the Bacharach ("Just kidding!") and unleash a fully prepared second show that's an homage to GWAR (complete with costumes).

  12. No one? Jammed? Everyone? Such finality, such definitive totality. It's a conspiracy I tell ya, pure trickery! We'll get those wascals this year! And BTW...there was no concept to get last year....just pure musical and visual immersion, if you let it happen. You were just trying too hard!

  13. I couldn't agree more. I don't care who ends up winning, I want genuine unpredictability. I don't want to be able to guess with any degree of accuracy looking at a graph of the season which corps will be battling it out in which 2-4 corps groups...I want those groupings utterly demolished, every night. Wondering if any particular corps will end up either 10th or 11th (or 4/5/6, or even 1/2/3) doesn't exactly make for excitement the way it used to.

  16. yup gotta give Hopkins some credit for that. For god sakes this is drum corps not MBL or the NFL, getting booed by thousands of people in the Rose Bowl isn't something we could all say we would know how to handle.

  17. This is true, but alumni approval is a vastly over rated thing to an extent, and is more of a self-entitlement thing than anything else. If an alumni is going to stop supporting their organization because of a uniform color/design change, then their priorities are way out of whack anyway. I would guess that with an organization like The Cadets, one that's been around for 3/4's of a century, the ratio between alumni who support the corps because of the great experience it provided them/provides other generations vs the alumni who support the corps only because everything is done exactly how they approve, likely favor alumni A. The self entitlement many people display in drum corps is sad: the experience is NOT about the style of music, or the drill design, or instrumentation, or rules. The experience is about the ideals instilled in you, the friends/family you made, etc. Too many people lose sight of what's really important in this activity, and focus too much on the wrong things.

  18. I know from a fan prospective last years show didn't make much sense. Yes it was a very complex musical and visual experience. But tell me, how is drum corps going to pull people in to watch and donate to the program when your average fan, who isn't attuned to music at all, can understand the complexities of a atonal show. You can't make it so complicated people can't understand it. If you were at finals watching the crowd, the only reason they clapped at the end was because the BD staff was waving their arms and jumping around, which made us assume that the show was ending.

  20. Fusion finished it's show this past weekend and ended Sunday night with TWO full show runs at the end of the day!! Speaking from a Director's standpoint I have to say I'm very proud of the efforts of the entire organization and I'm extremely happy with the production the team has put together this year. I'm also very happy with the staff members who have joined the Fusion family this year as well as the new marching members. Speaking from a member's standpoint I have to say the show is AWESOME. It's really an experience to perform this show. I honestly can say that it's more than just playing and marching.......it's an adventure but you better know your stuff or you better jump out like someone had to do ...... This weekend coming up we have practice at Walmart in Rockaway on Saturday, practice on sunday followed by a night of fun at the lot......bbqing, games, bsing, whatever........just good times.........Monday we have two parades in Jersey, please check the schedule for full details. We currently have the following positions still open: ONE TRUMPET ONE BARI ONE TUBA AND THREE GUARD SPOTS So, here's the deal. Come down this weekend if you're getting that spring fever to do this crazy thing that we all love to do. March for the day...if you like it STAY........if not, no worries....we won't be mad .......really. Just come see for yourself what we're all excited about and "JOIN THE ADVENTURE"!!! Love my Fusion!!!!! See you all in Wildwood!!!

  21. You mean the "Bando nonsense" that left them undefeated for the last 2 seasons.......I bet you'd like to see them put that aside! And....pray tell, when did BD depart from the Business of Drum Corps???. Having said that..... I would also like to see the Scouts do well this year, but I think SCV be the Bluecoats of 2011.

  22. well....yes...and no. We pay good money to be entertained, not educated. yes, I'll eventually stand as each corps leaves the field, but more often than not lately it's to stretch since stadiums pack you in like sardines.

  24. all of those terms tend to be manifestations of one another when talking about recreational activities, imo. in other words, hate or negativity towards what you see and hear on any type of field for any recreational activity is always immature and petty.

  29. As Lois mentioned, you were a hit at Spring Preview and we were SO glad to have you with us! The music had me from start to finish, and I can't wait to see what it looks like on the field. Best wishes for a great season, Fusion! See you in just a few weeks!

  30. A lot of kids get cut from WC, not because of talent or lack thereof, but because the corps simply doesn't have enough room for them. What happens? They wind up sitting home all summer polishing a couch with their backside instead of being on the feild where they belong. What a waste of talent.

  32. I swear, there is so much ironic bull____ going on in this thread that it's a shame. You have some people talking about why some corps deserve some of the negativity they've deserve, but many of those corps consistently put out shows that keep them in finals, regardless of how entertaining they are. Now how many people actually "hate" or dislike corps that don't get into finals; so much that they sit on their hands and don't give them the applause they deserve for performing the show they were given? In my opinion, many of the comments on this thread are ONLY directed at some of the corps in the top 6, 7 or 8. I could be wrong, but that's what it seems like to me on this site.

  35. BK. Blue Knights have consistently put out some of the fullest sounding hornlines over the past half decade or so. I couldn't care less where the judges put them, they are really the only corps my ears actually ring from on a consistent basis.

  36. I wish they'd brought back the full rendition when they finally made finals....these 2 bar snips just don't do it for me. When I went to 85 prelims and they hit the full chart, the entire stadium became the BAC cheering section....it was amazing!

  37. I was lucky enough to spend most of the long weekend with the corps, and it occurred to me that this is their 7th year at New Hampton for move-in. Over the weekend, they worked hard, ate well, and went through tons of sunscreen. It was in the upper 80's both Sunday and Monday, which is pretty warm for the end of May in the mountains of New Hampshire. Morale is VERY high, which you could reasonably expect early on, but it didn't hurt that they had grilled steak for dinner on the second night... Oh, and one other thing....I didn't hear a single member even mention G8, TOC, etc etc etc.....apparently, they are alot less concerned with this aspect of the season than many of us here in DCP Land. In fact, I'm quite sure that many if not most don't even know about it. They do seem pretty determined, though.

  38. Um, may I please have the floor for a quick second? First before I begin, I don't post on here often if at all anymore. Occasionally I'll check in to see what's new in the drum corps community (like now), but overall I have grown distant from the activity. I did march, and when I marched I took a lot of pride in it and felt a very strong connection with my corps. But since leaving drum corps to pursue other goals in life I haven't put too much thought or concern into what my alma mater has been up to. Why? Because it's none of my **** business. I had my time on the field and I'll never forget it or the corps that I marched with, but the reality is that no matter what that corps does in the present or the future it will have absolutely no effect on me, my emotions, my sanity, etc. I'll still wake up every morning and do my daily routine, and maybe I'll see a movie with my girlfriend or play a pick-up soccer game with my friends afterwards if I'm in a good mood. A corps changing their uniform has never interrupted this cycle for me, and unless you're so pathetic that your fond memories of marching are the only things keeping your unstable mind intact I doubt it will interrupt your daily cycle either. The only people that should be this concerned about a uniform are the people wearing it and the people designing it, and that is no longer you. As for tradition, call me progressive but that's more or less just a concept. The fact of the matter is that in this sport, no corps is ever the same year after year. If this was the same corps as the one you marched in you'd still be in it. The big point I'm trying to make in all of this is that this is no longer "your" corps, and the only people that should be concerned about it are the people still involved with the corps on the field and in the offices. If it matters so much to you, find your way into a staff position.

  42. I hate a very select few corps. I won't apologize for it so save your breath. As far as giving every single corps a standing ovation, no way. It's for the birds. It's like tipping for poor service. This isn't little league. Not everybody wins and gets a trophy and an ice cream cone. It's a competitive activity participated in by kids who know exactly what they are getting in to. If a corps wants me to stand and clap, they better bring it. They better look at me and say "I dare you to sit. I dare you."

  43. This early speculation/prediction stuff still beats the old days... when we often wouldn't know for sure until the pre-contest meeting on Labor Day weekend exactly how many corps would be showing up. We had to wait to see if the rumors of "this corps from Canada or that corps from the Midwest" or whatever would prove to be true or not. I gotta admit, though.... that setup made for some great surprise "wake-up calls" at Prelims... when a virtually unknown corps would drop in seemingly out of nowhere and blow the place away early in the day.

  47. Sorry i should've been more specific. Im sure there are corps that have players from good music schools, but how many do you know that actually come from conservatories? they had atleast 7 during the 2002-2005 era, and only a handful during 2008. Although, im sure every corps thinks they have the most talented players, so no point in arguing anymore
    1 point
  48. i keep seeing people talk about 2005-2009 were off years first off, the 2005 hornline was probably one of the best hornlines thats been on a football field. I'm sure most of you don't want to hear that but its the truth. Go back and listen to the recording and hopefully you'll notice. Yes they had a crappy show that year, and they knew it too. But some of the best players in drum corps come from that organization. How many drum corps kids do you know come from IU, New England Conservatory or any other big name music schools? Same thing goes for 2008. AMAZING players, but due to the brass staff, they werent able to play the way all of you want them to. As far as 2010, i could understand why you'd think they were over placed. But that hornline was somewhat young as well. So give them a break
