  3. By that, you mean breaking whole musical phrases into bite-sized chunks, then throwing them into a musical Cuisinart, so in the end, they're barely recognizable as coming from the same composition? Something like that?

  4. Dude....Its so on now. Didn't I send you those Coats' recordings? Guess you weren't diggin em. Oh well. I got your ### this summer. And yeah, bentley knows who I am but for those who don't, I teach Bluecoats.

  5. I predict DCP will bash Blue Devils all season long no matter what they play or how well they perform.

  6. My FWIW. This is for the 90's: Favorite horn show--90 Star. Favorite hornline--92 Star. Favorite entire show--93 Star. AND--I'm a diehard Blue Devils fan! Since 1974!

  7. The Whitney Houston version was an over-produced monstrosity, for my $.02. Sorry, but the notion of our National Anthem as a pop music power ballad leaves me cold. I'll take the Marine Band playing the Sousa-Damrosch arrangement any day of the week - and twice on Super Bowl Sunday. Peace, Fred O.

  8. I don't see anything wrong with posting about this in the DCP forum. I've been out of touch for a while, but if there is controversy (inside the drum corps community) surrounding this, well people just better get over it. This is going to do more for our activity than any other single event ever has or possibly ever could.

  9. The drummers during halftime were high school students from Avon, Center Grove, Fishers, and Franklin Central.

  10. It was excellent, but all performances of the National Anthem will be fighting for 2nd place behind Whitney Houston.

  11. IMO standing on the front sideline is pretty much a joke (and it probably impedes performers as much as being on the field --seen many "sideline" judges getting in the way of equipment changes). If you're gonna have field level judges, they need to be on the field. Otherwise you might as well evaluate from the box. Maybe we should mount field judges on Skycams !

  12. This is all I know... Edge Performance Ensemble (The Brainchild of David Bruni and his Empire Statesmen organization) has had several performances in Charlotte area today and has been a great hit with the community. Due to rules of the show (America's Got Talent), there can be no official or un-official statements at this time related to their audition. You should hear something in a few weeks.

  13. I have to say 04 Vanguard. The combination of musicality, sound quality and finesse was unbelievable, and that front ensemble was amazing.

  14. I figured I would get flamed and negged. Its kind of disheartening that DCP realists are often asked to put on the kid gloves when talking about who's better and why. Imagine this for a second. A panel of college football experts are talking about the Heisman trophy race. One expert singles out a leading candidate for having problems with being sloppy with the ball and being prone to fumble and for this reason states that he should NOT be the frontrunner. Can you imagine any of the other panelists not disagreeing with him but simply calling him rude and his comments un called for? Of course not. And of course this type of discussion and more heated ones that the example are par for the course in all college sports. Now, college football players and world class drum corps members are roughly the same age. Why do we treat drum corps kids differently? Cause they are musicians? Well, that would imply that musicians are weaker and more sensitive to criticism than athletes. This is not a stereotype that I want to encourage. Or is it because drum corps is not as popular as football and therefore we should protect it more by always being nice? Well, trying to protect drum corps by hyping all groups equally and not ever being critical makes us look ingenuine and makes us look like we are trying too hard to be accepted. All in all, its not a big deal that someone gets critical on here. We're all adults. All the folks that marched 95 madison are in there 30's by now. They can take it. And for myself I can dish it and take it. When people make fun of how we (The mid-90 Cadets) bounced on the back up technique, I smile and laugh. (Partly because its so true. ) I know I just hijacked the post. Does anyone think I should start a thread on this subject?

  15. Belshazzar was a tour de force in brass. 1990 for me. Looks like Star has accumulated 56% of the votes. Pretty impressive.

  16. I agree with what you're saying in principle: a great design team who loses just one piece can still be a great design team. In fact I don't think the Cavies are going to drop out of finals or anything else dramatic. I expect them to still be highly competitive. But -- in my opinion -- some talents are unique and just can't be replaced.
    2 points
  17. Just don't see this happening. Maybe it's just a lack of imagination on my part (as in 'I can't imagine the Cavies without Michael Gaines'). He was personally responsible for so much of the effect (both drill AND guard ) that it's hard to believe it won't affect placement. I could definitely be wrong (and Mr. Hinshaw's resume is not lacking) but I'll personally be surprised to see the Cavies unaffected by this staff change.

  20. You did indeed pay less for those 3 years (3600 in your example) , but before you're allowed to march elsewhere you need to pay the "discount" (3 * 800 = $2400) back. While lowering the barrier to entry is nice, you're still asking a kid to pay money to march elsewhere. From his point of view that's a penalty for terminating the contract. In fact you're asking him to pay MORE than a full year of tuition. If a kid can envision going elsewhere during his marching career, he's never going to sign that contract. Better to pay as you go than receive a "discount" which only applies if you march 5 years. There's also a lot of hand-waving in your proposal. How do you know your "5 year auditionee" won't crash and burn in spring training? Even if he lasts the entire tour, how do you know you want him back? Does retaining vets help a corps who's lack of competitiveness is (a) design or (b) instruction ? Where will you make up the lost dues from 5-year discount contracts? Reducing your tuition revenue by 40% is NOT gonna help the bottom line.
    2 points
  21. And exactly *how* does this help retention? Corps already offer discounts to returning vets. So offering financial incentives to members who WANT to return already exists. It appears your idea creates a penalty for vets who want to leave. Why would a corps want to retain members who don't want to be there?

  23. whether you feel this deserves coverage on DCP or not... the fact is about 35 of the finest drum corps people I know are performing today in Charlotte for America's Got Talent... and frankly, while not being "exactly" what we like to call drum corps, they are performing exactly the same kind of moves we taught them to perform on the football field... Not only do we wish them well... let's hope they kick butt... the activity could use the shot in the arm... Anyone who has any first hand info on how things are going... please share...

  25. Thanks for this. It takes some integrity to admit mistakes. And 93 BD is the shizz. The trade off bari/sop duet with the staccato comps from the hornline is one of the best moments ever. 92 Star still the best though.

  27. Has to be percussion. WIth your standard drumline size of 8/4/5, they have the smallest sections in the corps. And with so much talent going for so few spots, it's always the most competitive. And probably the reason that even towards the bottom of World Class, the percussion can be a much stronger section in comparison, just because of the size of the talent pool versus size of available spots

  28. That's not the show. I'll say that right now.

  29. I think the Super Bowl is the perfect time to have one of our top drum corps perform a couple of songs for everybody to give exposure to the activity. p.s. I'm sorry. I couldn't help adding this to this thread. It's just my 2 cents lol

  33. What a jumbled, rambling mess smothered in nostalgic goo unrelated, and unrelatable, to current day reality. There was more reality and real potential solutions in the Restructuring the BOD thread, and that one had to be put to sleep by the mods. Ironically, your solution of "scholastic music" was exactly the solution premise of GH and the G7, even while you blame him for the activity's demise. But, at least, their solution started in the high school ranks to feed the university-aged membership so prized by the corps. Further, as budget cuts reduce the demand for arts and music majors, the number of colleges offering such degrees will decline and, along with it, the number of students to fill your imagined UDCI ranks. Relying on public budgets to demand and fund arts education is a quicker death to the activity than you imagine is real. The activity needs to be funded by business, not by college tuition, public grants, private donations, or bingo. The sooner the support base realizes that the better chance it has to save and grow drum corps.

  34. The front sideline is always an option. DCI could (and should) adopt a policy prohibiting judges from going inside forms and becoming part of the show. You don't need to be three feet from the snare line to effectively judge what they are doing.

  38. Thanks for responding without flaming. And I've thought about my post about since its been commented on. I will give you that they were extremely exciting and went for it every night. I just happen to hear them warm up many a night in the lot. When I did, I heard a lot of cracks and things not together. My general impression was exciting but dirty. Now, in total disclosure, my opinion is based on warming up next to them. I was a member of the Cadets soprano line that year, and so I might be a bit biased. And I personally don't think they should have beat us Quarters night. BD I think were as good or better than us but not Madison. And I don't think they beat us or BD all year in brass. I could be wrong. Another good excuse to geek out on "from the press box." Could I possible still be bitter? Well, I didn't think so until I saw them getting voted 1st in this little poll! I guess I'm still passionate about the competition. But I do enjoy having these frank conversations. Its all in fun.

  39. I personally thought Cavaliers should have won outright that year. One of the best shows ever put on the field. It also ties SCV 99 as my favorite show ever. Cadets show was great that year, but I would have had Cavaliers about .4-.7 ahead of Cadets during finals week.

  44. A. Some people like BD because they frequently win. B. Some people always like BD regardless of their program. C. Some people like BD but sometimes don't enjoy their program. D. Some people don't like BD regardless of their program. E. Some people don't like BD because they frequently win. This list is not exhaustive or complete. I think what most people find objectionable about Plan's argument is that he seems to want to shove nearly everyone who doesn't agree with his assessment of a BD production into bin (E). Personally I'm in bin ©. See how that works. *I* get to decide how I feel. It's pretty cool. You can decide how you feel too! It's a wonderful world.
