  1. It was just something I saw hanging in a window and I couldn’t resist.

  2. And I, in solidarity with the OP, am boycotting all drum corps contests until June, 20th!

  4. I did a quick Google search to help you. PETA and “Grab your Wallet” list lots of boycotts. If you want to boycott all boycotts, you can drive a Caterpillar tractor to Chick-fil-A for a chicken sandwich, have a pint of Ben and Jerry’s for desert, go home and place an order on Amazon, book a flight on Air France, make a craft or two with items purchased at Hobby Lobby, and pay for it all with a loan from Lending Tree.

  5. Spandex pants and boots. Really? I believe the spandex pants, but spandex boots is sort of a stretch!

  6. When did you attend your last downhill event DrumCorpsLover ? Just curious as to whether you decided on the bugles or the boycott gig recently, or maybe 35-40 years ago ?

  8. It’s too bad we do not have the old issues of “Drum Corps News” available on line. I believe DCX is working on it. I’d love people to read what must have been a July 1978 issue. Some people were infuriated after DCI East and CYO Nationals in 1978. The shows were too modern, corps no longer played “songs,” no respect for the American flag, color guards were dancing. Shows were not “clean.” A few of the culprits: Phantom, 27th, Bridgemen, Blue Stars, Garfield, North Star, Blue Devils, SCV. Some of these shows today are classic “Old School.” When I watch DVD’s, I’m most at home with the 70’s and 80’s, but I’m still using my vacation time for Indy and Allentown, and as is the case most years, I’ll be impressed.

  9. These are not original, but merely original 'flavor'!!! While they do not have valves, they are in fact mere copies and thus not pure enough to be considered real bugles!!!

  10. Before people threaten boycotting, I say produce ticket stubs, cancelled checks, credit card receipts, proof of mileage and plane trips, that show you actually support drum corps. Support your claim with back issues of “Drum Corps World,” or the now defunct“Drum Corps News,” prove you have the knowledge of folks such as Michael Boo, Jeff Ream, George Dixon, Fran Harding, Terri Scheher, and others, the positivity of HookEmCavies or DrumManTX, then say you are boycotting.

  12. Since Hopkins would not bring back G bugles, I guess that's that.

  13. So let’s recap: if Cadets don’t bring back Hopkins, AND if they don’t bring back G bugles, DrumCorpsLover is boycotting. I don’t know. Don’t you have some fresher takes? These aren’t very original. I was thinking about boycotting DCI unless I get ice cream for supper tonight.

  17. If you slog through this (flo sub required) it becomes real apparent (to me at least) that Hannum/Klesch fell in love with their clever ideas and left Subel with music that didn't represent his initial concept in any visually realizable way. Additionally, "META" shows (ie a drum corps shows about drum corps) almost always sound like wonderful ideas in the design room (where everyone is really pleased with how clever it all is) but fall flat on their face when put on the field/floor. Beast's final idea was that "Crown is the beast"; that's really hard to pull off. Better if they had been a bit more literal with the concept and stayed with a more concrete idea. Oh well ... live and learn. 2019 (so far at least) sounds WAY more coherent and contains far more "visual relatability".

  21. Done before: Malden Ambassadors 1976. They also played “Make All Our Dreams Come True” (Laverne and Shirley theme) that year.

  22. How fitting! Those alive today who actually played the bugles in which the original poster speaks are saturated with fat. Just sayin'!

  23. Interesting note here that might intrigue the Bruckster-ate poster. While the ABBA tour will use live people on stage with instruments, Agnetha, Björn, Benny, and Anni-Frid will actually appear on stage as holograms.

  26. So what years are the “original drum corps you knew and loved”? I’ve had someone accuse me of not being in a “real” drum corps like he was but will let you guess on their era and mine.

  28. Blue Knights really let their arrangement of First Circle breath. IMO Come to think of it, they did the same with Rite last year.

  29. Dream on. Being true to the source, or even respecting the source in terms of allowing the music to live and breath via phrasing and development, they are all fantasy in modern DCI arranging. The attention span of people involved in DCI today seems to not be patient enough to appreciate those types of musical aspects.

  35. Maybe explain to the 'young uns who lurk that the ELP on a drum corps thread isn't the same thing as the EPL used currently in DCI lingo for most corps in THIS century. ELP= Emerson, Lake, (&) Palmer. EPL= Eat, Pack, Load (the buses)

  38. I just want them to have competent design that’s performed well & a music book that does not rely on any piece used in the past. Am I asking too much?

  39. While they still have a great horn line, they haven't been quite the same I think since Wayne stepped away. I'm afraid that Carolina Crown now rules the roost of horn lines. Through all the Downey years I always felt like the BD horn line just commanded your attention more than any other in the activity. They were always just a notch cleaner and more powerful than the others. And I think Wayne knew how to write in a way that accentuated their abilities. They are still awesome, but now Crown has the same impact on me that BD used to have.
