Instauration in Indy: 6/18

what i got out of this

New drum corps sucks we need to go back to the 80s.

yes?

I think I noticed a broader horizon of preference in his posting,. For example, when pressed ,I believe he likes many of the 70's Corps better than the top 4 of tonite as well ( and for sure DCI ' 75 Titleist, Madison Scouts. I would naturally presume as well. )

Just got home from the show in Indy. I wasn't going to say anything because there is really no point...but...the Cadet's show kind of laid a bomb. Not that it was performed badly, on the contrary - that was some of the best brass sound heard in a couple of years and the drum was fantastic! It is the show. - plain and simple. I am fairly patriotic - I fly the flag on Flag day on July 4th etc..so I thought it was kind of neat that a corp was doing a patriotic show. The crowd politely applauded a couple of times but there was not any real excitement in the show except for a couple of loud power chords. Some difficult music performed well for the most part (there was one part that almost got away from them). But the big ramps and stage with an annoying narrator going up down the ramps with some nice music going on in the background is not really an exciting show.

Carolina Crown's show did have the excitement and almost the same intensity of the Cadet's sound. They need to tweak the ending - it was a little anti-climatic and at the beginning when the countdown goes to liftoff I don't think I would out the dead beat in there before the sound of the liftoff.

Phantom had a decent show with Swan Lake with some nice visuals in uniform changes and the music was good. There is one odd bit with the pit near the beginning that I wasn;t sure how that fit in with the show though! Cavvies look to be stronger this year with a better show than last year and it was entertaining! Troopers are quite the same Troopers from years ago but hopefully they get it back! Oh well it is late - time for bed.

I kind of agree with a lot of this, but I do have a question since you were in the stadium.

I thought that Cadets' narration on the FN sounded pretty muddy as as both the way it was eq'ed and the volume it was in relation to the rest of the corps (I honestly think it was a little low in the mix). I had some problems understanding what was said at times.

Was that how it sounded in the stadium? Did you have problems understanding narration or is just the FN feed; or maybe it was just my speaker set-up at home tonight. I agree Cadets perform great for this early, and as a percussionist I LOVE their percussion book and high level of achievement already!

Can someone explain to me why there was no brass judge tonight? I dont understand this at all.

I watched the Indy show tonight on the Fan Network. First off, let me say that the live streams on the FN are low rent, terrible productions. Terrible sound, have to listen to the echo of the stadium announcer, & way too much dead air with no one talking. Just terrible. DCI should be ashamed of the FN streams. Very disapointing. Then again, $69 is a good deal for 12 webcasts & I only had a few hiccups tonight.

As far as the corps go, here is my short take:

Troopers: Probably my favorite show of the night. Enjoyable music & a much better corps than I expected. I actually had them in 4th beating the Cavies.

Cavies: There wasnt anything that I liked, & the horn line is terrible, especially the Sopranos. Troopers sounded better & were more prepared. I dont think this show places much hiogher than 9th place at finals.

Phantom: Put me to sleep. Just too boring. I like the opening uniforms, hate the change unis. Ye gads! I thought PR was at least 5 points better than Cavies.

Cadets: I love the uniforms & the traditional military approach...well, except for the narration, which there is just waaaay too much of. This show didnt grab me liked I hoped it would, & their arrangement of one of my favorite drum corps classics of all time, Appalachian Spring, missed the mark for me. I was hoping they would play it like the original. Drum line is unreal as uaual. I could watch & listen to Garfields Snare line all day.

Carolina Crown: The uniforms look ridiculous. Why oversized Shakos? Who thinks they actually look good? They look like little kids. The Trampolines arent worth the trouble for what little use they actually get. Waaaay too much crap on the field for my tastes. This show will need changes to compete in August. I had Garfield beating Crown tonight & I'm glad they did.

5 shows & the Troopers was the only one that I really liked.

Lastly, they showed a shot of the crowd after Crown performed while the guy from the National Guard was singing God Bless America, & the crowd was filing out of the stadium like I have never seen...before scores were announced. Do fans not even stick around for scores anymore? I realize there is less to stay for since DCI took all the excitement out of retreat & the announcing of the scores, but geez.

At least we werent subjected to listening to Brandt Crocker tonight!

Thanks for the review. It was a bit harsh perhaps n delivery, but your opinions are no better nor no worse than anyone else's here. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to " opinions ", so any attempt to grade an opinion , which was done with yours( but nobody elses ) is sort of silly, imo. Those who jumped all over you ( needlessly , imo ) seemed to miss your positive critique of the Troopers it appears. Also, you are a fan as you clearly took the time to pony up the money to subscribe to Fan Network, and then took the time to post us a review afterwards, and for that I thank you.

Let's be clear, I graded the delivery, not the opinion, BRASSO. Thanks! I'm the only one to have done that, so you can freely call me out.

I never berated an opinion on shows, but if someone isn't classy, sure why not critique that?

The grammar was good enough. I appreciate getting a review, but I don't appreciate some of the other stuff and it's not necessary other than to be negative.

Seriously? No one else was bothered by the fact that there was no encore?

And you have come to this conclusion.. how exactly ?

Ok , fair enough. I know a few submarine pitchers in baseball that had a poor delivery too. I'd give them a C- in delivery too ( or worse ). But if they can keep runners off the base baths, they can deliver the pitch to home plate any way they want to as far as I'm concerned.

The poster seems frustrated by todays shows. Ok, so he's entitled to that opinion.. just as much as someone that loves everything about the show tonite too.

I was a little late watching the FN stream, so I'm just catching up with all the comments.

My impressions:

- Troopers: Nice music, but it didn't obviously look like a finalist's show. I think they've got their work cut out for them.

- Cavies. I thought they had a better-designed show than Phantom in almost every respect. Their brass line didn't do them any favors tonight, but it's hard to believe this show will stay under PR. The marimba stuff was fun..

- Phantom. I didn't really like what Phantom did with the actual Swan Lake music, and didn't find the change to black uniforms to be very effective. I'll have to watch it again, but my first impression was pretty meh.

- Crown. I felt it held together much better than Sunday's stream, and definitely started to communicate some emotions in places but there's a way to go before the technical proficiency really speaks as music. While they stayed pretty close to the 2013 formula in many respects, there is a lot more featured percussion - there's no hiding the drums this year. I'd be shocked if they don't medal.

- Cadets. Obviously cleaner than Crown, and some good improvements to the flow and narration since Johnstown. The musicality of the brass and percussion is already impressive, and the guard colors are very well chosen for the program. I think the barrier here is a boring theme, and a long stretch of the show that's kind of stuck in a middle tempo and not very exciting. The narrator is quite good (although his costume is goofy) and I find the attempts to cut between him and recorded material really awkward. Like Crown did last year, I think they should trust their performer and let him tell us what Lincoln, Roosevelt and Kennedy said.

I appreciate all of that as well, but I also know that this cat can be classy too. He's just frustrated in the changes in design. I am too, but it is what it is. It just gets a little frustrating is all. I know I can be a bit snarky too from time to time, but I at least try to keep it less negative and possibly offensive to other people. Maybe not the designers, but most everyone else...
