  1. Shows in the Boston area have unique qualities, and one was Paul Cain and his famous "(Insert corps name), YOU" with an emphasis on you and often with the audience joining in and after a slight pause "may enter the field for competition." He loved drum corps, the kids involved, and his enthusiastic style was an audience favorite. Rest In Peace.

  2. BD's soloists did improvise this year. They were given a framework for the solos and then allowed to improvise within that. I don't think they deviated tremendously from what they had come up with as the season progressed, mainly because the versions they had "set" worked so well.

  3. and on and on and on and on and on and on. Sheesh let it go. Your pit bull repeat of the same low lying scoundrel like incredulously inaccurate statements Jeff has made (how dare he), are now reaching the stomping-of-feet, arms-crossed-on-the-chest harumph level. It is reading now of "but you said, Jeff" - and "Mom....no one is listening to me" and arguing for arguing sake. It seems most everyone here gets exactly what Jeff and Brasso & others (except maybe GD) have been saying. The G7 very self serving coup didn't work. Someone tried a to pull a fast one and got caught.

  4. Not enough, IMO!! but I think you would guess that to be my stance given my profile..... DCI Corps program history is packed FULL of charts from the great Big Band genre. Let's bring that back......somehow..........I beg.

  5. Without you taking the time, expense, and effort to provide us all documented proof on this, Fran, its just your OPINION, not a fact however on this alleged" nice, sunny day there in Baltimore " (... lol!)

  6. Paul traveled with several New England corps plus the Cadets in the early 90's and several WGI guards. He annually announced the Bristol, R. I. Fourth of July parade,. Contagious was his love for the activity and its mms, his honor for military veterans and their service, and his gregarious, humorous and inclusive hospitality for so many he met and soon made his friends. YOU, Paul, have touched so many lives. May you be blessed for your goodness.

  7. Stu is technically correct about there being no automatic loss of AAA status for missing top 7 any number of times. However... And the proposal provided the mechanism for the G7 to control who stays in, or who gets thrown out. "The board of DCI can by 2/3 vote relocate a corps to a different class for performance or other reasons. Participation within the organization can be granted or withdrawn by the board by a vote of 2/3." Bear in mind that "the board", as defined on the preceding slide, was the G7 corps directors and three "outside" directors, no one else. So if Stu became the director of a G7 corps, the board could vote to move his fiscally responsible corps out of AAA status simply out of annoyance.

  8. But that is not a contradiction. Here, follow the sequence of events: 1. They see the proposal. 2. Then GH sneaks something else into it. 3. GH presents the modified proposal at the DCI meeting, this being the first time anyone else sees the changes.

  11. So sorry to hear about Paul. I worked with him at a number of DCI shows.... he was always helpful, and always had a kind word for me. Made it fun!!! A great man.

  12. This is DCP; a blog; a chat room for corps idiots like us to bloviate, rant, rave, irritate, annoy, exchange niceties, click on the like button, .... If that nothing really more than a glorified sandbox to exchange opinions is 'Business' to you, well that does explaine a lot.

  13. Paul Cain marched Drum Corps in the pre DCI years ( St. Mary's Majestic Knights, Charlestown, Ma. ) was later an instructor, show promoter, show announcer, many Corps volunteer, etc. that gave over a half a century of involvement in many capacities to the Drum Corps community. He was a Massachusetts Drum Corps Hall of Famer Inductee. He was a good Man and will be missed. Condolences to his family and friends. Rest in Peace, Paul.

  15. BD was finals on video, but semis on the tapes and later cd

  16. I want to say replacements are a fairly recent thing. BD's frack was on the tapes. I know in 2010 they put in the semis performance for Crown rather than show someone breaking their leg (I have to admit, thanks DCI on that one) and then after that it's been pretty constant. So I guess starting with the Blu Rays in 2009? I just don't remember any "hidden" edits being made prior to then. Mike

  17. Between that news and the design team adjustments, I think Spirit is on very solid ground for 2018. The possibility of them making the Prelims cinecast is definitely within reach.

  18. I have read this thread pretty thoroughly and found it enlightening, even if overstated in many cases. But there is something that I don’t think I’ve seen addressed in the whole G7 issue. I, and others I know who are drum corps fans, aren’t that hung up on the top 12 corps, much less the top 8. We just like drum corps, and the more corps with that many more shows to take in, the merrier. I recently reconnected with a former student from my music teaching days and found out she’s a big drum corps fan. Immediately we became animated as we talked about our favorite shows from this season and our personal favorite corps through the ages – Phantom Regiment, Scouts, etc. I taught school in Delaware and Arizona and my student was born and raised in Delaware. She went on and on about some local Delaware corps that aren’t around anymore. What got her excited about a show – was getting her hair blown back with the great, big sound. Over in Open Class, quite a few of us who were watching the 2017 prelims and finals on Flo got very excited about Southwind – and their scores weren’t that impressive. But their sound was. It was awesome and they had some great solos and ensembles that rivaled the top 12 corps. But there they were, in Open Class, not even in the top 6 of OC, and yet they won our hearts and interest and future support with their music. So I have to say that the arrogance of a group of people in positions of power to pretty much disregard, spurn, stamp as of no value or little value – Southwind, Academy, Troopers, Vanguard Cadets, Music City – MERELY because they are not in the top 8 placing corps – is puzzling to me. I think they must hang out with people who have lost their pure love of music to think like that. I just don’t get it.

  19. Wow. Great pickup for Spirit! (I know, I know, they already had him, but good that they could get him worked into more daily operations!) Mike

  20. MMD's pricing is not geared to the digital collector. $15 for one corps = $180 for the top 12. For a product that literally has no added per unit cost, as it's built from the same file they use for the Blu Rays. MMD has never run a video "bundle," though they have done audio ones, and this price has been consistent for three years now, since the site opened. Now with that said, digital licensing costs different than physical licensing. I'm not entirely sure, though, that it's truly responsible for a 75% (compared to BR disc) or 100% (compared to DVD) markup? Mike

  21. I'm a computer/ internet savvy millennial but I would prefer to have a Blu-ray disc rather than only digital. I have every DCI finals on DVD/Blu and it would be pretty disappointing to no longer have that option. I guess maybe it's a new version of preferring vinyl over cassette or CD.

  22. Bingo - DCP isn't the place for an organization to provide current updates and information to their MM's or fans, or recruiting and performance info either (No relevant audience). Discussions are mostly remember when (Lowest form of Conversation <1$> Tony Soprano), and speculation arguments about current rules and processes. So with the exception of death notices, HOF inductees and alumni events, the DCA forum is irrelevant in this new era of the activity.
