  1. IMO the shows that you have to watch more than once to get and understand are the most special. 2010 BD and 2010 SCV are actually my favorite shows from that year because of how unique and non cookie cutter show program they possess. many people have different tastes and thats why theres so many different programs each year to enjoy. theres always "WHOOOO" moments in each show, you just gotta be look for them. they can range from being loud, impact moments that we love or the most executed, perfect technique moments that are so good it makes us giggle at how good it is.

  2. If you check out the overall thread, you'll find that a lot of the discussion has not been "shooting down" ideas, but rather, offering advice/opinions on specific aspects of the overall concepts, or just asking questions. Some of the resulting discussion has resulted in refinement of ideas, and increasing support for these ideas among the participants in this thread (and perhaps elsewhere, too). That's how discussion works. And in contrast, at times, merely asking a question gets a snarky retort from the OP or someone else, insinuating that the questioner is just too stupid or closed-minded to understand. That's not how discussion works. In fact, when proponents of an agenda react to questions by attacking the questioners, that usually indicates that they have something to hide. I'm sure those of you who have "made it in the world" have learned better ways to respond to questions. Now, prove it. Lead by example.

  3. In 71 I played triple tenor in Garfield, and we used three snare slings...one over each shoulder plus a third around our waist to keep them from bouncing around as we marched.

  5. Music is a language; rhythm is part of that language; and naming rhythms within that language is certainly a logical construct. To counter here: by your reasoning, (and for you to be consistent), the concept of *naming* a combination of pitches (ie naming chords) would therefore also seem a little silly to you; the concept of naming styles (ie straight v swing) would also seem a little silly to you; etc...

  6. Yes, I marched my rook-out year with the Colts. I'm definitely glad I didn't pass up the opportunity to at least march corps once. It's very bitter sweet though, being a rook-out. I wish I could go back and experience being with my family again, but at least I got to participate and make memories while I could.

  7. I highly suggest getting used to going shirtless. It's really not a big deal, no one will seriously give you any #### for it. A few jokes? Probably, but nothing terrible. And going shirtless makes really hot rehearsal days not quite so hot. Plus, then you're really tan. Tan + ripped = babes.

  9. Call me in the minority if you want but even though their drill is not the same as 2004 or even 2005, difficulty is still there. Some stuff in BD 2011 looks painful to rep over and over again. So I don't doubt BD has some tough visual resposibilities but they make it look easy (which I am sure it's not). Just my opinion, that's all.

  10. Can someone bring back the upside down spinning drummers like Les Etoiles in 1997?

  11. When I marched 2002 Madison Scouts, we had some of the most talented veteran members, most of whom started marching in the 20th century ('97-'99, lol)! In 2003, we hired a new visual and design team, as well as management and colorguard staff. Another change this year, the musical talent dropped definitely, with the loss of an incredible group of ageouts the year before, and the incoming group of kids weren't exactly as talented as the average talent pool that came to Madison. The average member age in '03 was 17 1/2. 2002 - Semifinals placement of 14th. Did not make Finals. 2003 - 8th place Finals. Something to think about when it comes to the power behind the design of a show.

  13. ok i'll bite..um...no. It was an interesting individual performance, perhaps better suited for I&E imo. The big effects start with the music! Get with the program :-)

  16. My first love is Crossmen. (That's where my kid was!) After that it is a tie between the Madison Scouts and Cavies. The Scouts show brought me to tears every time I saw the tower fall. Then they had me on my feet celebrating during ESOM. I love the Cavies because of how masculine the show was! They were so inventive. On another note, I was on the plane flying home from finals with my son when I got to watch an interesting dynamic... In front of us was a young man in his Cavies jacket. Another young man in a Scouts jacket walked up and realized he was sharing the row with the Cavies member. They both regarded each other for a moment, trying to decide if it was ok to sit with someone from another corps. Then, at the same time, they smiled and introduced themselves to each other. It was an absolutely precious moment to watch. It turns out the Cavie was a rookie and the Scout had just aged out. I had a blast listening to them share their stories.

  20. None. More often than not they retread-type shows don't come close to living up to expectations or past glory. If I wanted to see a classic show from a favorite corps I'd take the ten minutes to watch the show performed on Fan Network. For every Phantom 2008 show that does a great job modernizing and re-imagining a classic, there are several others that fall short of past greatness (SCV 2005 & 1992, Cadets 2009, Cavaliers 1997, etc); I'd MUCH rather corps do fresh show designs than try to recapture past triumphs

  21. Well, I went to school with a horrible football program. Perhaps bad football = good personality? Whatever, this tool from NIU is partly responsible for the huskies' defense giving up 60 points. He won't be going anywhere in football or life.

  24. Yep. Like these: Puerx 3-in-1 Don't take nearly as much stuff as you think you'll need. You should be able to hit a Walmart every week or two, and if you can, ask you parents to mail you some socks halfway through tour. You throw away the old ones. Maybe do the same with underwear. ;) Avoid cotton shorts if you can since the others are easily washed in the shower, dry quicker, and tend to hold the stink less than cotton. Get two pairs of great shoes - don't go cheap or you'll regret it. Go to a running store where they analyze your step pattern to find out the best kind. You can shop around after that for the specific brand/model, but go with their recommendations. Best thing you can do for yourself on tour is to have great shoes. My daughter had two different brands and said it helped to switch them every day to reduce blisters.

  28. Capital is a barrier to establishing a new revenue stream only for the unconfident, unskilled and unimaginative. If your ultimate idea needs significant capital in order to execute, start with a different, smaller idea... one that generates smaller revenues and work up to it... create the ability to self-finance. If you're lost in the wilderness, freezing your ### off... you don't wait for someone to come along with a zippo and a bag of charcoal briquettes. You get creative, find things around you, things either easily available or that you already possess, to create a small spark... catch that spark to light a tiny bit of tinder... and work your way up, step by step to a bonfire. Using lack of capital as an excuse to starting a business is the same as a guy using the lack of a gym membership as the excuse for his fat ###.

  30. I don't know of any way a really good snare line could be judged without someone risking life and limb putting his/her face as close to the drum heads as possible. Can stick height be judged from the press box? I, personally, would like to see pit and drums split in the scoring. Over the years there has been some great drums but not pit and vice versa. A good drumline needs its own credit as does the pit. I think the pit often gets the short end of the scoring. It must be hard for one judge to completely and accurately come up with a valid score for both during a short 11 minute show. Only during the first few shows of a season do I ever see a judge 'linger' around the pit and actually watch and listen to the pit members. Perhaps a brass judge could get a good idea of foot placement and marching style standing just outside a formation, rather than going thru it, but judging from above would allow for a lot of 'shortcuts' in form to be taken. IMO.

  32. ANYTHING would be better than the lame format they have had for the last few years, which I think is little more than a DCI recruiting gimmick (get the bandos in, and get them hooked). I haven't gone because the closest theater from my house is a good hour's drive and I already have the last 10 years on DVD...why would I want to drive an hour to see something I can watch in the comfort of my home? Show us some of the older shows we CAN'T see on Fan Network-like '94 Velvet Knights, for example. Didn't score well, but was one of the funniest shows I can remember. Maybe have folks vote for the top shows to NOT make Finals, and limit it to pre-2000; again, the stuff you CAN'T get on FN. Just MHO, but I know that format would get me back in the theater.

  33. well, I think it's safe to say YEA is not represented at TOB and CBA shows, so no issues there. Look...you guys make it out to be a sin that YEA is doing what they are doing at YEA run shows. Not that I'm YEA's biggest booster, but come on, think like business people here. What's the one thing many of us cry about on here? That corps aren't run like a business. Well, YEA is doing what a business would...making a smart decision about how to run their business. Like I said a few posts up, do you think Coke let's Pepsi into their events? DO you think Miller Lite invites Bud to their events? The problem I see is too many people are thinking it's 1975 in how you need to handle things. If another DCA corps wants to get more involved in the band world...they can start their own circuit. They can form strategic partnerships with other band circuits. Go look at the sponsors and partners for the TOB All StarBand....Surf and Cabs. Being on the ASB staff, I see no other corps knocking on the doors to get involved. So when we send out press releases, or ads, or the upcoming interview with Halftime magazine, they get their names mentioned. Why? Cause they offered to get involved. You can't just throw out your name and have people come to your corps anymore. God knows my old corps tried that after they won DCA, and coupled with other problems, they were inactive 2 years later, did get back out, but never recovered. I NEVER saw them at band shows recruiting. I can tell you being present at band shows in the 80s and 90s helped us a lot! There are opportunities for corps to get their names out there to help recruit without having to go to YEA sponsored shows. The smart ones are doing just that.

  40. Up to this posting I have viewed your opinions with a keen sense of interest; I was even attempting to think outside the box and follow your reasoning. Now, with this post, you are just flat nuts! A successful business person, whether an employee or a CEO, who (see bold above because this is your suggestion) works for 25 min., then plays a video game for an hour, then works for another 25 min,. then takes a 1 hour nap, then works for 25 min, then goes and plays Frisbee catch with a dog for an hour, is going to generate enough revenue to run a multi-faceted million dollar corporation? Really? And what successful CEO helped you have this epiphany? Oh yeah, I forgot;, you got this brilliant idea from a Professor not a CEO of a highly successful corporation!!! So tell us, what corporation have you ran as a CEO with this method? How much revenue have you actually generated for a corporation as a Manager or an Employee with this method?

  41. Fire, for better or worse, is not allowed on the field. There's too much of a chance of something going wrong...perhaps a dry natural grass conflagration, flaming woodblocks, or a bird flying by and spreading the fire on its wings in panic, setting aflame the percussion field judge or the Alamodome fabric roof. (This year I had not one, but two pigeons roosting on the sill of the window of my press box perch in San Antonio, either watching me live blog or sizing me up for a potential meal.)
