  1. "Cancel culture" is a term adopted by people who refuse to hold those accountable who have done things wrong in the past and continue to do things wrong. We're not perfect at all, but people SHOULD be held accountable for their actions. In terms of Crossmen changing their logo, who cares? It's their prerogative and I'm not bothered by it at all. Cadets have changed their logo many times and while there were people who went nuts about it, we moved on.

  2. Doesn't bother me any. Every corps seems to update their logo periodically. Mike

  3. I have no dog in this hunt, but the Crossmen's logo is in fact a Maltese cross, used by the German (and other European) military for centuries well before the Nazis decade of terror and genocide. This cross was also used by the 20th Maine Regiment during the Civil War, and used by countless other organizations throughout history. The Crossmen can certainly brand themselves however they like, but I hope they don't allow some clueless college kid to dictate what they do. I have recently wondered how long it will be until the cancel culture goes after the Boston "CRUSADERS"....probably a matter of time.

  4. I'd like to cancel the term "Cancel Culture" as people are using it willy nilly.

  5. The US drafted 1.8 million teenagers & young 20 Somethings from 1964 to 1973, so it was a major factor in marcher loss in Drum Corps during that Vietnam Era. It effected my marching years, as well as about 2 dozen others I know that had full intention of marching for other than their Uncle and wearing his uniform. But Uncle Sam didn't really give you much options unless you were affluent and your parents had contacts. By the late 60's, the draftees had not much interest once they returned to hang out at the VFW and AL posts, and even they had soured on how the ruling elites had basically screwed them over. So its true, the Drum Corps lost marchers, sponsors, favor, and by 1972 Drum Corps needed to find a new way forward if it was to survive much longer.

  9. I get it, and don’t personally have a problem with it. Some might see cancel culture, but I really don’t think it’s a big deal.

  12. Also heard from Vietnam vets that some of them we’re not really welcomed at Posts. Combo of generation gap and “didn’t win your war”. My dad was a Korea vet and told me a few times he was accepted only because he was local so known that way (grew up few blocks from the small town Post). Posts shot themselves in the foot IMO

  13. Already been done with a college north of me. School is Lutheran based and don’t think anyone knows why they picked the Crusaders name in the first place. Now the River Hawks which actually makes sense. FYI Crossmen name comes from one of the sponsors, John(?) Cross AL Post. And that ain’t in Texas PS why is it people grump about a good group not using a name or symbol anymore because idiots are using it. Why don’t they grump about the idiots?

  16. My understanding is that the Crossmen are going to the C as a logo and doing away with the Cross. I know my son said when he wore the Cross on campus several people asked him if he was a Nazi (😣). I understand the history of the symbol, but how do others feel about changing this iconic symbol? Not looking to pick any side, just want to understand.

  17. Just saw on YT that Eric Carr the guy behind all of the fantastic youtube videos is leaving the Marine Corps and going full time into Youtube -- If there were a way for streamed drum corps shows to have some sort of in studio or on site commentary it would be a hoot if Eric could get that gig - his is so funny and informative - Good luck in whatever you do in music next Eric!

  18. My Dad was a Korean vet and he wouldn’t join the VFW because of how they treated the Vietnam vets. He was a member of the American Legion post in town and my mom was in the Ladies Auxiliary.

  19. My grandpa served in the US Army in France during WWI and he pulled the iron cross necklace off a German soldier. It always looked like that to me. My sis still has it. Quite a collector’s item.

  20. Phantom '92 - Early Season. Note that Phantom started the season with these pieces of fabric that went over both shoulders instead of the blue baldric you see at the end of the season. These were apparently ditched mid-season because they were hard to control in the wind.

  21. The only thing different with the Crossmen change is I believe they feel they have to change. Quite different than Cadets and others. Those who know the history of the logo know it's not offensive. They should be able to put out a statement concerning the history of the logo and keep it. I'm sure they feel it's not worth the fight.

  24. The cross used by the Crossmen appears to be a variation of the Malta Cross. The Knights of Malta opposed totalitarianism during WWII and Malta itself voluntarily became part of the British Empire during the war and played a significant role in restocking Allied supplies during the war. It’s pretty safe to say there is no connection with the Malta Cross and Nazi Germany. To the best of my knowledge there is no historic connection with Crossmen and any religious group. That being said, any kind of religious symbolism can start a fire these days, so some with the corps may feel it is too religious and needs to be changed. To me, Crossmen has had identity issues for years. Some may trace it back to the move to Texas, I would date it back to YEA. However some corps do update logos, others bring logos out of retirement, so maybe they are trying to establish a new identity, maybe they think it’s time for a change and no big deal.

  25. Whether someone has a problem with the logo change or not, doesn't change the fact that it is cancel culture. Does anyone know if the alumni were asked about this ? Also, what happens to Bone's uniform ? Guess the Scouts are next. New name and uniform to remove any taint from the BSA.

  26. over the last 2 years, I have seen some corps consign stuff to a company to sell for them...their deal is i think they get 70% of whats made. and trust me, they dropped a lot of stuff off on MULTIPLE occasions. ( this happens when you go through a few sets of flags and uniforms over a summer). the corps has made some decent change on it.

  27. sure there is, ask Congress 🙂 Considering a lot of the stuff is bought at cost, and later sold, the loss isn't that great. and i dont try to minimize it at all. sure, there is expense yes. But i have seen the other side and how it can generate revenue, and with a little bit of background in the financial world, i know how the smart ones can minimize the impact on the book compared to the big 5...food, fuel, housing, insurance and spring training. i have said this several times, which you've always ignored, but 4-6 weeks of sitting stationary on some college campus that doesn't come cheap is one of the biggest budget killers.

  28. USBands has a focus on bands of all sizes. in their original footprint up here, few if any bands are Texas sized. Still some #### good bands, taught by many people with ties in the DCI world. BOA is BOA. with BD taking over USBands, itll be interesting to see how things go for them

  30. yeah...even though he had the support of his immediate chain of command, higher ups ordered that he remove a ton of videos and not use govt facilities. given that he had 2 months on his enlistment and was making more money on yt than from the marines, it makes financial sense for him to leave.

  34. Recently posted on YouTube. Phantom '91 semis. Love seeing the drill from different perspectives. Note at the 10:00 mark in the video the guard does half-frontal with the hornline which would change with what happened in finals. Phantom being "cheeky" later in finals.
