  1. Not being BD in a avante-gardish way, per se, but taking a fresh idea and running with it. Hopefully we're done with the killings and the "female centric" themes and onto something more generally entertaining. I'm really excited about this announcement!

  2. forgive me for going off track for a moment for bringing up the vet audition comment about another corps. But in respect and fairness to the members of Regiment '15, why don't we agree to keep the comments to Phantom and use the other threads about those corps. oui or non? D'accord!

  7. Why? The simple, pointed, perplexing question was on the minds and lips of thousands filing out of stadiums in Lowell, Lynn and Lawrence after last week's elongated series of championship tilts. Why did the Midwest and, to some extent, the Far West, lower the status and stature of [the] drum corps activity with inane hijinks, impish shenanigans and infantile efforts under the guise of General Effect? The query, perhaps more than anything else, plagued fans and officials who shook their heads in disbelief over what was being dished up on the field. . . . Any degree of success achieved in final standings is a tribute to the musical and marching talent of the teen-age participants. Questionable is how much these young men and girls actually enjoyed being pawns for the warped imagination of instructors and managers. <snip> -- Herb Cole, writing in the Boston Globe, 1971. Whew. He seems inconsolable, though he expresses his anguish with an impressive display of alliteration. Also noted: The corps are composed of "young men and girls."

  8. I love Paris in the springtime. I love Paris in the fall. I love Paris in the winter when it drizzles, I love Paris in the summer when it sizzles.

  9. I like the show title and what the concept could be. At the moment, it doesn't reference a fixed storyline that boxes them in from a design standpoint. I hope they choose a "theme" and not a storyline. There are so many great things they could use to convey what Paris is about. They have already done 3 of 6 musical selections before and I wish they would refrain from repeating music from their own history (as well as the history of the activity). Yet I haven't heard the arrangements and if my own history is about to repeat, I may be wrong. When I heard their choices in '05 I was so disappointed only to end up loving that show.

  10. Agreed it'll depend completely on the arrangements. I have no issue with them repeating source music though, especially when they've been done so long ago.

  11. Maybe not as blatant, but yes, I'm glad it's not another story line show. Agree with you there. I actually liked Hill's last show for the Glassmen, personally of course not trying to convince anyone otherwise, I listen to it quite a bit, especially the Organ Symphony closer, though I want it to be different, don't get me wrong. I just hope he can spice it up quite a bit this year. I like this one on the surface more than the last three concerning announcements, we'll see where it goes.

  12. I try. Now to be hateful for real... glad this isn't looking like another ###### story. +1 for that. i know it's been 20 years since Claire de Lune and 10 since An American in Paris, but is there a need for both throwbacks? Could've used plenty more from Debussy. i see Hill is rehashing his Glassmen stuff. i think whether i like this show or not will hinge on the arrangements. if they're too similar (wind band-ish) to the last two years stuff, it's not going to work for me.

  14. Of course. It may be those same culprits on here who live in a world of perpetual angst........................no, not the new percussion instructor for Crown (who probably had all his vets audition this season even though they may have marched there previously.) Paul I am lucky to know from his time in Cadets and then on staff of Boston and then 7th Regiment. Dan marched with someone I sponsored in Regiment and who has kept a good friendship with that person. My experiences have been nicely humorous. That being said, Dan was the public face of the Regiment for awhile in their public relations vids and posts. Both guys are a plus and good picks.

  15. With last year's Jim Jones winner returning to conduct, an honest question: Can one win Jim Jones twice or more? Has anyone?

  19. ...here's a link to some historical material... http://www.high-velocity-media.com/DCW/?page_id=367 Drum Corps World (AKA Steve Vickers) is a mine of information, if you can get your hands on "The History of Drum and Bugle Corps" (I think Mr.Vickers is re-publishing it...or has recently...or will...heh...) you will be way ahead...

  20. Sounds like a fun show-- I'm really looking forward to seeing it. (And Claire de Line certainly brings back fond memories.)

  22. One thing danced around on this topic but never really hit on is this- An individual might be "good enough", but the staff may feel they're not 'as good a fit' with that corps as someone else is. It may not be attitude, talent, just a perception the staff gets that's not really the fault of that individual applicant. The plethora of applicants allows the staffs to be that choosy. Which goes a long way to explain how someone might get cut at BD and offered a spot at Crown and vice versa. Dan's post awhile ago is close- go somewhere you're wanted, feel comfortable, and happy as a member, chasing a ring is secondary.

  24. I don't feel as much sadness at Al's passing as I do awe - he lived as full a life as a person could hope to live. Condolences to Al's family, but just a celebration of a man living full out for 9 decades. Pretty much the best a person can hope to achieve. Another Sunriser great passed on.

  26. Pepe's progression of interrogation when meeting someone new was: 1) Didja ever march in the Dream? ... if yes, 2) Didja ever win the Dream? ... if yes, 3) Didja ever win it twice in a row? ... if yes, then he'd talk to you ... Shelton's three-peat in 67-68-69 was a remarkable accomplishment given all the changes that occurred in judging and instrumentation those years ... :-)

  27. I've been attending the show in Murfreesboro for years and hope DCI returns there in 2015. Vanderbilt was a mess last summer. Terrible parking, long concession lines and tiny main entrance. The only worse stadium was Lebanon, IL.

  28. I, for one, am getting very tired of arguments ad hominem about whether someone has marched D&BC as a guideline for whether their opinions deserve a hearing or not. I'm sure that there are a number of posters here on DCP who never stepped on the competitive field with a corps but who, nonetheless, have some relationship ( such as a volunteer or mom or tour manager or…?) with DC and who live and breath drum corps as a musical performance art and/or love drum corps because a particular corps has touched their heart and soul. Their opinions deserve credit in this community. I am 72 and marched 1956-1960 with the Regiment when it was born and was in its infancy and the fact that it became a respected world class corps does not entitle my opinion to any more weight on this forum than someone who is 19 and has not marched. Listen to what our posters say and, if you do not agree, tell us why without attacking the character or experience or…? of the contributor. This forum should not be a game of "gotcha". Now, as others have said, back to Regiment "15 and (I hope) the Summer of City of Light (kdaddy's suggestion on Dec 5: Occam's Razor reigns again).

  29. Does SCV having some of PR's design staff throw a wrench into this discussion? I know there are more to a design team than the music arrangers, but same arrangers who wrote for PR's 1-9 years are also writing at SCV, aren't they? The odd thing about SCV recently: I think they've been doing really safe (to an extent) shows the last two years - shows that IMO could not medal because of the design, and placed as high because of achievement. I think for SCV to be Top 3 again they will need to do a more innovative show design, and with that also comes the risk of dropping again. Doing something new risks failing/missing the mark 2012 is a good example, IMO, of mixing "safe," tried-and-true literature (Planets, music from Phantom of the Opera) while bringing a fresh visual theme & some newer literature (the Mackey and Whitacre pieces that were relatively new to drum corps when SCV did them in 2012). I would love to see SCV go back in a similar direction - something not too esoteric (like Devil's Staircase of 3Hree) but also not something that thematically and rep-wise has been done before (like Les Mis or 2014). Of course, I really liked SCV the last few years, and while concept-wise I rolled my eyes and groaned a bit when I heard Les Mis and Scheherazade but ended up really liking Les Mis and appreciating 2014.
