  1. Flo doesn't carry DCA any longer, because the venues they stream from can't meet Flo's bandwidth demands...and even then there's issues when a band mom wants to plug in a coffee pot

  4. Well other corps are getting their top 12.... so why not create a page for the greatest corps in DCI!!! My list.... it is a tie between all of their shows. To be fair, it is extremely hard for me to pick just 12 shows. Go Cavies!

  7. I’m convinced DCI is made healthier by presenting itself to the widest possible audience. Increasing viewership well beyond the audience who chooses to attend events in person. Thus, the success and continued growth of Flo is essential. Hopefully, The DCI/Flo relationship will grow to permit the inclusion of enthusiasts around the world creating a customer base greater than could ever attend live inside a venue. Helps to attract sponsors, too! This is no time to abandon Flo. I plan to subscribe and encourage others to do the same!

  8. The Scouts are, without a doubt to me, where it begins and ends for most entertaining shows. That said, it’s hard to fit 12 shows throughout the 30 years I have been a fan into one post. But here goes.... 12. 1990- It doesn’t get a lot of love. It took 9th, as the bar stools as well as visual in the opener are a bit of a head scratcher. But this is the first appearance of the piece “Remembrance” , which is always a great listen. The closer “You Can Cook” is very entertaining, 11. 1998- An anniversary show that was a lot of fun and entertaining. Lupon the Third was a different choice for an opener- but a great one . (Now, if we could just get another anime theme song, Cowboy Bebop, on the field). The closer of this show, Rememberance, is a classic. The groove provided by the percussion in this piece is perfect. 10. 1991 - The first City of Angels show. Very entertaining arrangements. The company front at the end, with the rifle toss and files going into the company front- great drill. 9. 1986- Great hornline. The Duke Ellington piece in this show has some terrific brass moments, to go along with great arranging. The closer from Starlight Express is also memorable. 8. 1975 - Almost put this higher, (But must leave room for the rest I really enjoy too).. MacArthur Park, of course, is a classic Scouts piece. So many other pieces in this show are also classic. I am rather new school in drum corps, but this show deserves to stand the test of time. 7. 1994- This show lit up Foxboro on Finals night, as it did all other shows that season. The closer gives me chills every time. The soloist doing his thing, and that push by the corps forward to the end. Pure drum corps joy. 6. 1996- Soprano soloist in the beginning. Mis Abuelos as the opener. The ending push in Malagueña. All deserving to be called the Drum Corps Dream, Part Dos. 5. 1992 - The Second City of Angels. Beefed up book in percussion and brass. Entertainment value turned up. Classic brass sound. 91 was good, but this one is the more entertaining of the two. 4. 2014- Not on everyone’s list to be ranked this high. But I was impressed with it, from the first time I saw it. From the first time st the movie theater event in June, through August and Finals, ot chsnged dramticslly, Particularly the closing piece and the soloist in the end zone- which was a perfect way to end it. I would like another take from the Scouts of Ellis music, or a show with an entirely Kenton book anytime. 3. 1995 - I was in Allentown to see this show live. From that experience, I don’t think there will ever be a louder crowd response I will hear in my lifetime. (2008 Phantom was close). . When your corps is selling signed drum heads at the souvie booth from the snareline, it speaks volumes to how popular this show was at the time. 2. 1984- One of my favorite Scout books ever. I have waited entirely to long for the Waltz of the Mushroom Hunters to be brought back by the Scouts, (or another corps on the field). That piece alone, makes this one of my favorite Scouts shows ever. 1. 1993 - Strawberry Soup.. Crowd response to the sopranos in the stratosphere.- Epic. The rain.. Drums solo kicking ### in Strawberry Soup, as well as laying down the groove throughout the show. This show was on fire throughout the season, and it seemed to hit its peak that night in Jackson.

  11. I posted the final playing of the Corps Song/Rainbow in the LOS parking lot after the 2018 season on Facebook 6 days ago. It's been shared over 400 times, and is running up on 30,000 views. These were Dayton's last notes as a Cavalier. I love that that MM's, staff, and administrations compete so ferociously, but know how to take care of their "own" regardless of corps when the time comes for it.

  13. The litmus test of of whether income is UBTI, as I understand it, is based on the use of the revenue towards the org's mission. Making revenue from outside drum corps will not attract scrutiny from the IRS unless the income is used for non-mission purposes. "...beg for those dollars or move into the world of for profit." I think that's a false choice. There's a whole bunch of revenue to be made between maxing non-profit income and becoming a tax-paying C-corp.

  14. Great point, given the tone of the videos - one of the designers (choreographer) and one caption head (guard) are women.

  17. well Stu....doesn't matter if DCI had the person or not in this case...VF/Z made their mind up for them. But to get in any door, you need someone with skills and a track record. Given the doors DCI is knocking on and getting inside.....they don't have that person. it's really not rocket science, no matter how many times you ask the question and changing words periodically to make it seem like you're Bob Woodward tooling around the West Wing for a scoop. Ergo, to continue to not waste DCP's time. I've answered this question and all variants of it for the last time.

  19. Can't say I agree with you. Since their win in 2013, Crown's placements have been: 2014-5th 2015--2nd 2016-3rd 2017-3rd 2018-4th In the same stretch of time, with BD getting 2nd in 2013, BD has been: 2014-1st 2015-1st 2016-2nd 2017-1st 2018-2nd I don't see a new era, at least in regards to BD, personally.

  20. The corps was also a top corps in the 1960's. The corps was formed in late 1964 as a merger between the Blue Stars Color Guard and a small parade corps forming the Blue Stars Drum Corps. The corps was a parade corps in 1965. 1966 was the 1st competition season for the corps. It finished 18th at the American Legion Nationals. Starting in 1967 it became one of the top corps in the country never finishing lower than 10th at the national championship contest of that era. The Corps folded in 1983 due to financial issues. A small group of very dedicated Alumni kept the spirit of the corps alive via a small C Class parade corps, Blue Star Cadets, while working to bring back the competitive corps which they accomplished in 1986. They gradually over time rebuilt the corps. Again the early 2000’s a group of alumni again gathered and put together a long term plan to move the corps forward and bring it back to being one of the top Drum Corps in the country.

  21. Very true and all of the cymbal making giants really seem to lean towards individual artists / groups rather than large overarching relationships. I think it probably gives them a little more control over advertising revenue. There are quite a few fish in the ocean (Zildjian, Sabian, Paiste, Meinl and even Bosphorus,) and they all seem on the surface at least to lean in the direction of individual artists or groups. Someone with a background in marketing (or at least someone smarter than me,) would have to explain the advantages. Stick and Mallet manufacturers have always been a little bit "flaky" so that's no real surprise. Percussion and Brass are so expensive to fill out a corps that the movement is at least seemingly a little slower. I really did like the idea of the Sysco or Aramark angle for food services, footwear manufacturers and clothing manufacturers. Under Armour isn't the only one after all (Nike, Adidas, Puma, Fila, New Balance, etc.)

  23. 1. 1988- the opener might keep this from being my overall favorite DCI show of all time...but Malaguena...wow. That's the best 5:15 in drum corps right there 2. 1975- classic. Guts and glory. 3. 2001- Hot Jazz Madison style. It got 11th place and is a completely overlooked and underrated show 4. 1995- for the fans. Oh I wish I was there. 5. 1997- who doesn't love a pirate adventure? 6. 1996- part 2 not as good as part 1 but still a heck of a show.

  28. So, a quick update from brass camp: Horns worked the opener this past weekend. I honestly don't know what the music is, but it has a very cinematic feel to it, almost like Bernard Herman and the old Hitchcock movies. As is expected, there are a lot of notes. Anyone thinking the horn line has lost a step will be sadly disappointed. I've been going to their camps now for ten years and this line is on par with some of the top lines of the past 6-7 years. There is a sense with this group that they have some unfinished business after last season, and the work ethic has improved. Each line has a unique identity, and you can see the vibe start to form in camps. Last season you kinda felt they were a little less mature, but this season they feel more focused. Let's see how things sound when they get to the April camp.

  30. This is the inherent problem with DCI thinking as it comes to marketing. It is not about the kids nor DCI fitting in with the athletic image of UA. It is all about a sponsor marketing their product to people who will buy their product. For example, Chewy.com presents DCI would be great. Why? Because most out on the field and in the stands own pets and buy pet products. UA thinks marching band hurts their image, who cares, move on. I bet pet stores love marching band parents and kids who own pets!!!! Again, it is all about marketing the sponsor's product to potential buyers not the recipient's product to the sponsor.

  31. Q: Why does Honda sponsor the Battle of the Bands when it has nothing to do with marching band? A: Because pretty darn near everyone on the field and in the stands 16 years of age and older drives a vehicle; (and it was marketed to Honda in that manner). While securing sponsorship is downright difficult, and an avalanche of No's will be heard over and over, DCI appears to not yet grasp the mentality of marketing their organizations to corporations outside of music which appeal to the thousands of non musicians in the stadiums as opposed to only a few miusicians within their niche.

  32. well i wont jump on her, but the way she conveyed the message was if it had to do with DCI's problems...and it doesn't appear to be that at all, as BOA hasn't been in the news ( at least so far)
