year1buick
50 minutes ago, Rich Cline said: NY to start experimental treatments for COVID-19 Some experts say the side effects are risky, but Chloroquine has been used to treat malaria and was approved to treat malaria by the FDA in 1949. Adhering to strict dosage amounts, it is currently being tested in NY. Article: NY to start experimental treatments for COVID-19 https://www.cityandstateny.com/articles/politics/new-york-city/ny-start-experimental-treatments-covid-19.html On Monday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that New York’s Department of Health would begin testing an experimental drug therapy and plasma treatment as possible treatments for COVID-19. Cuomo said that the Federal Food and Drug Administration gave the department approval to move forward with a combination drug therapy of hydroxychloroquine and zithromax to treat extremely ill COVID-19 patients. On Sunday, the governor said that the state has purchased “70,000 doses of Hydroxychloroquine, 10,000 doses of Zithromax and 750,000 doses of Chloroquine,” in anticipation of drug trials that will begin on Tuesday. Chloroquine, a treatment for malaria, made it into the news last week, after President Donald Trump listed the drug as a possible treatment for COVID-19. However, there is only “anecdotal evidence” that chloroquine could be a viable treatment for the virus, according to director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci. And only drug trials will be able to prove the effectiveness of the malaria treatment on COVID-19 patients. The FDA has also given the state permission to begin testing a serum derived from patients that have recovered from the virus, to help sick patients build up their immunity to it. The state will begin asking recovered COVID-19 patients to donate their plasma, used to make the serum, within the next few days. Injecting plasma from recovered patients into sick patients is a technique that has been used to fight off disease since the 1890s and has helped curb numerous outbreaks of the measles, mumps and influenza. Most recently the technique was used to suppress the H1N influenza outbreak in 2013. Reference: Chloroquine: MedlinePlus Drug Information https://medlineplus.gov/druginfo/meds/a682318.html It’s good that trials are starting. The one in France only had six patients in the group that included hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin. The combo seemed to show good results but that’s a pretty small group. The other problem is that the combo can also have the potential for heart complications so they’ll need to work out the risk/benefit analysis for recommending who should take it and and when. 2

Flame on! Like we did in 1941? 1917? 9/11? ”America” has a funny fault. We have an optimism and can-do spirit other nations do not have. Maybe that makes us want to assume the best from others. And let our defenses down. But when we get kicked in the jewels, we pull together like no others. The invasion of Normandy was 2-1/2 years after Pearl Harbor. It didn’t happen in a week. 1

I want nothing more than this country to pull together. But I worry that we are too polarized right now to do it. We were united after 9/11, and it seems we are at each other’s throats today. And I don’t mean to say any particular side of the divide has the truth. But I think pulling together means mutual respect and compromise. I know I am willing to meet my ideological opposites in the middle. Is it possible for we as a nation?
