  1. Today
  2. My DCI rookie year with Sky Ryders. I loved so many of the shows that year. Speaking of Regiment— if you look closely at the end, you can see the glint of Tim throwing his euph after the last cutoff. (As I remember hearing the story, he had a bet with Nikk over a case of beer.)
  3. Yeah, quite a few vets and instructors didn't return in '91 when Float left after '90. The line that ended up marching was just kind of thrown together. Not bad considering how green that line was. Also ended up being Rennick's lone stint with BD. I actually really liked the book, but yeah they just lacked the chops. A lot of great shows in '91, watching a taping of the broadcast of it the following year is what got me to start marching in '93.
  4. I said in another thread that if I was an Audiologist back in 1991, I would have made money off of BD. After every one of their performances, I would have been standing at the stadium exit passing out my business card for audiograms.
  5. '91 is one of my favorite years. Star, Regiment, Vanguard, Crossmen all had stellar years. Cadets introduced me to John Adams and minimalist music, for which I am eternally grateful. But the show which I've gone back to more than any other is BD. I'm a brass guy and that hornline.... dear lord.
  6. I agree they could use a better visual design, as I thought that hurt their competitiveness in 2019 and 2022. I am not sure Babylon’s visual would have worked so well without those great props. 5th feels like it would be a great outcome for them. Firing on all cylinders, they can crack the top 4, but that would be very tough after a year off going up against last year’s top 4, unless one of them really misfires on show design. I do think they are in the 5-8 mix, higher than I thought 4-5 months ago because they have kept staff largely intact. Have a great season, Vanguard!
  7. I agree about throwing in a little color. As much as I like black and white, a little something a bit brighter would pop.
  8. Yesterday
  9. I count 14 tuba on Facebook post of low brass. One fan will be disappointed.
  10. Just started getting into Judee Sill. This would make for a hair-raising moment in a ballad, IMO. Simply gorgeous. The whole song would work, but this is the big wow to me.
  11. Thanks for the heads up. I went to From the Pressbox, just missed the recap button. Z
  12. Mr. camel lips - I am glad you recognize those years of DCA as a notable “crossroads moment” for the organization. As it is now, all we can do is speculate about the path taken. I regret I can’t provide anything further. I can’t even tell you if there even was a formal vote, who was eligible to vote, nor what the actual vote totals were. I just wasn’t a part of that discussion and have no idea what points were made, for or against. As you know, drum corps is full of subjects to reminisce over, particularly our colorful senior corps years. We can add this to the menu, for sure. I appreciate your participation in this unusual pastime we had a chance to enjoy. I had a good ride!
  13. From the Pressbox has them https://www.fromthepressbox.com/1991season Click the '1991 recaps' button to download the detailed recaps.
  14. Star did not outright win a single caption as announced at finals. Multiple ties in captions (including one 3-way tie), but no outright win. May be the last time that has happened. Bluecoats only won effect in 2016. I am having no luck finding a recap from finals online. A quick Google search is turning nothing up. Guess I should not have pitched out all of those Drumcorps Worlds years and years ago. Z
  15. I knew there was a reason I liked you two.
  16. I will be going to most of the shows after Texas. If Dre needs anything during that time (if any of you reading this are Mandarin parents, this applies to you too!), please let me know.
  17. Thank you! I don't know if I will make it out there for Family Day this year, so I might take you up on that.
  18. Yay, people arguing... Just the thing I love to see on DCP.... I'm really looking forward to SCV this year! I hope they make different costume choices, and maybe add more color the show... It's going to be really interesting to see where they place competitively. Great staff, combined with newer members. Could place 1st to 10th, imho. BD does well with new marchers to their corps every year, and Cavaliers underachieving with good vets proves that anything can happen with a good design, and bad things can happen with a bad design....
  19. Sounds like a Starsky and Hutch episode (but in a good way) 😀
  20. I mean, I know the theme and some of the plans, but they'd get mad at me if I shared, so.... Also, since they're not currently top 5, they don't get much attention. Plus, DCP has died off quite a bit, especially since Covid.
  21. Thanks for the history lesson. You mentioned Gil Silva in your comments above. He was very much a welcoming person towards expansion in DCA. at the Directors meeting in 2006 or 2007 he outlined in great detail the predictable path and accurate path of DCA on how it was going to lose perennial shows that had been thriving for years. How DCA was going to lose historic and thriving Units. And boy did it happen in such a short period of time. I think the DCA voting block in the NE just shrugged it off thinking it was just going to happen to some out of area NE Units and maybe some dying and decaying NE corps that they had been picking up from the boot straps for years that they figured were already out the door. But As He predicted year after year they start dropping like flies. You are correct. 2005-2006 was the LAST year to right the ship. Had there been real effort to expand DCA THEN DCA might still be DCA with Units thriving outside the NE with a REAL World Fan Base. NOT what they are stuck with today.
  22. Since most corps haven’t announced themes, there’s not much to talk about in general…except BDs dominance and SCVs issues. 😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️😶‍🌫️🤓
