  3. I'm going to go ahead and risk being annihilated by Scouts honks and say that was the worst show in the long history of the Madison Scouts. Top to bottom, left to right, I have no idea how a design staff thought that that show was suitable for performance in Division 1 drum corps. I am very happy the Scouts are in a much better place now and am looking forward to what the future holds for them.

  6. For the record I did not personally give you any negative reputation... The George Washington Bridge is located near the former Fort Washington and New Jersey’s Fort Lee, which were locations used by General George Washington in an attempt to deter the British from occupying New York City during the American Revolutionary War in 1776. "It should be an inspiration to us to recall that here, in Fort Washington, in 1776, our forebears made one of the most valiant stands against the insurmountable obstacles of the entire Revolutionary War. Here, at Jeffrey Hook, (George) Washington and his generals once struggled to block this channel against a hostile fleet with the sunken hulls of ships. Here, in a defense unmatched for heroism, 3,000 Americans sacrificed all for a great cause. We may rejoice that this great bridge was a site so sacred in patriotic memories." - Franklin D. Roosevelt. Dedication Ceremony for the George Washington Bridge.

  13. Whatever it was... I don't think I've ever heard anyone put as much sound through a brass instrument as Pepe did with that horn!!!

  14. My daughter marched trumpet with The Cadets for the past two years (and has three left) and here's my outside opinion of how the audition went for her. Get the book and practice what's in it. No need to memorize, just get familiar with what's in there so it's not a surprise. She never said much about the marching, but I believe they are more concerned with posture, coordination and how well you take and make corrections. You don't need to be spot-on right out of the gate. I think they're looking more for kids that are coachable and have great attitudes that will grow as the season progresses. Go in with the mindset that you'll be a sponge, listen carefully to everything, do your darndest to do what they say, remain humble, and be ready to work your ### off. The details will take care of themselves. Most of all, don't stress. If you can go in relaxed, but focused, keep your head down and do what the vets do, you should be fine. Good luck.

  16. Wow...Really great article. Is that field pass thingy always free? That was my first one actually. I know I'm behind. It really was interesting to try and read between lines in some of those answers. I always love Dean's approach to the activity. It was good to hear Glen get some love. He's going to not only rock the drumline there but totally rock the entire music ensemble. He's the best brass instructor that happens to specialize in drums that I know. Seriously, they are going to rock.

  18. That is a Parduba 5 Star Trumpet (he would call it Soprano) mouthpiece in that horn with an adapter made by none other than Johnny Grass. I could only call it a Pepaphone - couldn't think of it as a french horn. Gave me brain freeze to think of it that way. Try writing for it!

  19. Funniest human being I ever came in contact with - it is my absolute opinion that he could have held his own on a stage with Robin Williams, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby, George Carlin, you name it... just the funniest guy on the planet. Someday there should be a Pepe story festival held after the I&E show, or more appropriately at DCI after the Open Class Finals - there was no greater proponent of DIV II & III than Pepe. So hard to believe it's 23 years.

  21. All Madison needs is a horn line (almost there) a drum line a guard, a show and the ability to execute. There, thats easy..BTW...Crowns rise started subtlety in 04, it wasn't until 07 when people started to take them seriously. They got a ways to go. Still, loved the energy and buzz they brought this year.

  22. I agree with this 100%. I would say though that Gaines put the horns in plenty of tough spots to sounds great as well though.

  26. The brass are NOT staged well at SCV. They are not set up to SOUND GOOD. Some, not all, but some of the problems that the brass have been having in their performance is because of the staging. Everything from environmental concerns with brass/percussion timing to folks who have the melody not being in the forefront to loud moments not being close enough to instruments scattered throughout with no rhyme or reason (3 lead trumpets right next to each other and then no lead trumpets around for yards etc.) to people with the most difficult parts having the largest step sizes. Trust me. Its a problem. There's more to drill writing than cool moves. The best brass lines out there have drill writers that set them up for success. I know that some drill writers don't prioritize this that much but those drill writers eventually fall by the wayside because the brass and percussion staff start to raise hell. Just saying that I'm calling it. Not this year but in the future the move is going to happen.

  27. Honk, honk, honk! Here we go with the 'my corps is better than your corps'. I think Madison won that battle last year with their main corps thread reaching about 200 pages by season's end. They sure have the most loyal and vocal followers/supporters on DCP....and this thread starts the debate for season 2012! Old Madison, New Madison, Powerhouse Madison, let the stories and the buildup begin! It's always fun to see if the corps/tour/show lives up to the hype.

  31. Why do you have such a bee up your ### about this? Maybe he is, maybe he isn't. But what does it matter to you if he goes to Vanguard or some "lesser" group? This is not a good thread to embarrass your corps in.

  32. Best of luck to Gaines. Hands down, the most influential drill writer of this past decade. Looking forward to seeing "new blood" take the reigns and what they put on the field. Some rather large shoes to fill.

  34. Hands down one of the greatest ever who changed the game and pushed the activity. He is also one of the nicest people you could ever meet. His work is a big influence and inspiration to me. I hope to see him again on the DCI scene sometime.

  36. IMO, I think a better comparison would be the Blue Knights as they are more obscure (like Crown was) and have jumped in placement the past two seasons and quality in the past three. Crown: 2006 - 8th 2007 - 6th 2008 - 4th 2009 - 2nd Madison: 2008 - 12th 2009 - 15th 2010 - 10th 2011 - 10th Blue Knights: 2008 - 9th 2009 - 11th 2010 - 11th 2011 - 9th Something to keep in mind is that BK has had a complete staff upheaval since 2008 with their brass caption head now retired. BK was pretty close to 8th in 2011 as well to - they beat Boston the show before quarters in Massilon, OH. This is all just food for thought. Needless to say, good things are ahead for both corps. I think we could very well see both of them on disc 1 for this next year.

  40. Bridgemen may have been comical, they may have been ground breaking, they may have loved to break all the rules BUT even the most critical and traditional drum corps person had to admit they were of a very high quality in all areas. They marched well, played unbeliveable, connected to an audiance. They were not just about the antics , it was at the top level of DCI quality.

  41. That's what they said when VK picked up the mantle. And for what it's worth, the St. Andrews's Bridgemen were pretty serious before they lost their CYO sponsorship, became the Bayonne Bridgmen, and Bobby came on board. Personally, I don't see why a drum corps can't be fun and kick some tail at the same time. More power to Surf, and I hope this show produces a full corps that can knock some socks off and move up the competitive ladder. BTW, there was a list for VK, too. It was compiled by Jim Brokke, Dan Zeilinger, Mike McCool and me. We all flew down to Birmingham for championships week, went to rehearsals and watched all of pre-lims and finals, then would retire to the hotel to compare notes and add to the list. Some of those things were used years later, but having the list, no matter how far fetched, at least led to outside-the-box thinking. My favorite idea, that was never used: VK had a garage full of old Olds V/R bugles, since we were Zig's corps and could field test them. I wanted to do a fanfare with V/R's, toss them over the back sideline, and continue with the King 2V's. We probably had enough to last a season. Garry in Vegas

  43. I'm not sure I would want to base any staffing decisions on reviews from DCP. Sometimes they are written by "experienced/knowledgeable" folks and sometimes by a kid who plays 3rd trumpet (poorly) in the St. Rita's School for the Culturally Deprived and Ungifted Marching Toirtoises.

  44. This is poor taste. Obviously nothing came about on this situation. In fact I do believe the "individual" you are speaking of is working in a public school system. Tom, are you part of last years staff and not getting paid? If you are then you should contact DCI and give them your staff contract where you should be paid. But bashing people on a subject that people may not be aware of specifics is not a good idea. ALL I can say is wow...... So much for supporting, I'd also love to know why former admin was so quickly booted out, I am assuming they were not the purist" of souls. You've stooped to all all new LOW

  45. Be careful Tom! Wait for an official announcement first! If you are true to this activity, you need to wait and see. This kind of publicity can become a self-fulfilling prophecy!! Do you have any idea how dangerous it is to suggest the things you did?? I would immediately suggest you remove this post and listen to some of Phantom's ballads while you clear your head
