  2. Drum Corps kid's photo This is my kid. He's been watching DC since before his second birthday. He's 16. He filled spot #150 with Madison two weeks before the first show this year. He doesn't particularly care what the scores are (except that a classmate is marching in a competing corps!) He's been bitten by the bug that lives in the roar of the crowd. He's learned that hard work has rewards, that trust is earned and shared, and that his old man (a DC fossil from the 80's) is only half full of crap. He's learned that his limit is further out than he ever imagined. While the discussions we have here on DCP run the gamut, from thoughtful to _____________, lets remember the real value of this activity and why it is worthwhile. Pardon my bias, but drum corps kids have been and will continue to be something incredibly special. Of anything we may have "lost" along the way, this is the thing that is sacred.

  3. The Classic Countdown should revamp the format and do something of this nature. 1) Best percussion moments/features- Show segments of shows with classic drum features or moments, similar to the "Echoes in Artistry" CD series. You could show Madison 75-Dueling Banjos, Blue Devils 2009 Feature, Crossmen 96 Opener, etc. An hour or so of that plus... 2) Best Brass moments- Same concept as #1 but with the hornline. Madison 75 "Slaughter", Blue Devils 92 "When a Man Loves a Woman," Phantom 95 "Rhapsody on a Theme" I think a night of classic moments, and not just shows would be awesome. Thoughts? Or, thoughts on what moments you would include for #1 or #2.

  4. Over the weekend, the Person who runs the Drum Corps International Facebook page posted a picture of them showing a test Blu-ray disc of the 2011 World Championships. Someone asked if we could be told when the discs would ship and the Person who runs the Drum Corps International Facebook page replied that they should be shipping soon. So, I've started this topic for all of those who have pre-ordered the discs, whether Blu-ray, DVD or even just the CD's ... I thought it might be a good idea to let others know when the discs might be shipping by telling others when DCI drafts your account. Mine has not been drafted yet for the DVD/CD bundle i purchased, but I expect it anytime within the next two weeks since the DCI store said they are expected to ship by November 15. I also think that it might be interesting to see what people ordered and what the first thing they'll watch will be. I, myself, ordered two sets. I upgraded my Fan Network membership from the Live level to the Live+Blu after Finals Week when it dropped to $70 instead of $110 so it was an even better deal than normal. But, since I also watch these things with friends who don't have Blu-ray, and because the Blu-ray doesn't have everyone ... I got my normal bundle. Since 2004, I have gotten the bundle with both Volume 1 (Top 12) and Volume 2 (Everyone Else) along with the CD of everyone. Before that, it was the VHS version of that same exact Bundle. Then, once I do get my Blu-ray, of course the first thing I will watch is Crown 2011. Discuss!

  5. Madison Scouts - Always entertaining and had the best crowd response of any other corps... Again... Blue Knights Phantom SCV Bluecoats Boston

  6. unless Phantom can resurrect Luciano Pavarotti....i'd prefer there to be no singing. Thanks.

  7. Madison - because it was by far the most entertaining, and although they may have been a bit weak in some captions they got the best crowd response of any other corps.

  8. I think it is due time for Marty to be inducted into the DCI Hall of Fame. I still cannot believe he has never been inducted. Come on DCI and put a well deserving Marty Hurley in the Hall.

  9. I find that DCA (All-Age) is a family place more so than DCI. Just my opinion but I see more friendships in DCA between members of all corps than in the Junior circuit. We know the history, we've been around, we've hung around, we socialize. I guess I find DCA more like a family. Just wanted to say this and say THANK you DCA for being the way you are!!!

  10. Or just that whole show. I LOVE IT. And they march their ##### off for most of that show.

  11. I actually think they should show a last season's highlights to get us in the mood for the upcoming DCI season. And also to plug their first weekend broadcast. I think that makes the most sense. Also, maybe a plug for some sweet deals on the DVDs of 1974-1999. Once you own those DVDs then why would I bother going to the theater at all. I can pop my own popcorn.

  13. Harnesses were a Godsend, especially for snare drummers. With a sling my right shoulder would go numb at times because the weight wasn't equally distributed. Combine that with a leg rest (what a misnomer) and you have a recipe for physical soreness.

  14. No genius, it's because I'm old and forgetful - Bluecoats should have been in there second to last on my list. Thank you so much for pointing that out.

  18. I said it before on this topic, I'll say it again. We here on DCP ##### and moan that drum corps needs to run more like a business. Well.....YEA/USSBA/Cadets2 is doing something like a business would. And now people #####. No offense, but YEA has NO obligation to open up any of the shows they run...not shows at a school that the school is hosting, but one of the big USSBA run shows that they pay for....to let anyone in. And they aren't. Do you really think Coke invites Pepsi to display new products at the new Coke product launch? Hell no they don't. In the area of PA, NJ, DE, MD, WV, NY, VA there are multiple circuits out there to go get kids. In PA alone you have ands competing in TOB, Cavalcade, USSBA, PIMBA and LMBA...many bands in multiple associations. If you're a DCA corps and you want to recruit, contact one of them.If they say no, contact the next one. A smart corps will contact them all, and get out to as many of them as possible. It really isn't rocket science, it's not shady or unethical. It's common business logic.

  20. Weird answer on my part, but. . . in small stadiums I really enjoyed the Cavaliers. In large stadiums I enjoyed Carolina Crown. However, at the end of the year. . . in Finals. . . it was Phantom Regiment hands down. The reached way down and brought every ounce of emotion I've ever experienced in a show, including "Spartacus", 1996, 1979, etc, etc. Honorable Mention: Cadets, just because I love Sudoku.

  21. Or explaining to non-music people why this activity is so amazing!

  22. This is probably one of the best posts that has ever graced this forum. It made my morning! Now I remember why I spend so much time arguing with my non drum corps friends who are music majors about why it means so much to me.

  23. But you were the one suggesting DCI/BOA/WGI in your own proposal. You contradict yourself. My thoughts: 1. The market for event management is, IMO, less volatile in the marching arts than in the corporate world. Corporate events come and go with the slightest breeze, while we have essentially the same number of marching music events taking place in a near-depression vs. an economic boom. 2. DCI's aptitude is with drum corps contests. That aptitude translates easily to other marching arts events, but not as easily to most corporate events. I wouldn't dismiss the idea, though. If adding corporate events brings diversity and greater margins, and DCI's skills score points with corporate clients, then great. Do both, then.

  24. Exactly my point. Need to separate the two entities. AND there are quite a few USSBA bands that compete in TOB and Cavalcade. So you have a chance to see the kids anyway. Whats the difference if its USSBA, TOB, Cavalcade (I only use these three because they compete near me) or any other circuit. No need to get so testy about USSBA. Their ball. Their game. Their rules. Like them or not.

  25. 1. Don't listen to anything Tom Brace says. Yeah, that's worked for many hear on DCP. 2. Work hard. 3. Make friends. 4. Take time to enjoy. But, again. Trust me on this. Don't listen to Tom Brace. That guy is crazy.

  29. Oh, please. As I said earlier, perception and reality are very different. And besides, there's a modicum of truth to the old "beer swilling corps" whether you like it or not, diminished though it may be. The number of long-time DCA folks that are in denial on this and other important topics is simply astounding.

  30. Blue Devils: 1. Fabulous music, amazing guard, one of the best horn lines I've ever heard. 2. Because my kid had the best summer of his life marching this show, and being a dad is MY favorite show of any summer.

  32. For the first time in years I loved every one of the top ten shows. Each for a different reason. Can't remember a better year for a top ten. I'm obviously a PR homer, but I picked Cadets because they had a little bit of everything I liked this year.....drama, style, visual, style, intensity, style. Everyone of the top ten had at least one thing they did better than other corps (but perhaps not by much), but Cadets had the best 'package deal' -

  39. Since we have no idea, except past performance, I will use CI: 1-3: BD, Cadets, Cavies (in no particular order) 4-7: Bloo, Crown, PR, SCV 8-11: BK, Boston, BS, Madison 12: Crapshoot Remember: When you make a claim about who's going to make noise (Madison, Boston, etc), you have to also spell out who's most likely to stumble, making room for the noise-makers. For example, when Spirit was making noise last Winter, everyone pretty much agreed Glassmen were most vulnerable. Lo and behold, it worked out that way. Bloo and SCV certainly look vulnerable to me, but SCV has a clear history of turning things around; Bloo, not so much, except they haven't been lower than 7th since 2002. SCV HAS NEVER BEEN LOWER THAN 8th. (No other corps can say that.) Can PR get away with playing 3 ballads again? Lucky for them, SCV and Bloo were so "out there," no one "got it." Everyone "gets it" when PR plays ballads, so they did three of them, lol. Not sure that's going to fly again.

  40. I'll play... 1. Blue Devils (I just expect this, not necissarily want it) 2. The Cadets 3. Phantom Regiment 4. The Cavaliers 5. Bluecoats 6. Carolina Crown 7. Boston Crusaders 8. Blue Knights 9. Madison Scouts 10. Santa Clara Vanguard 11. Spirit of Atlanta 12. Crossmen - tough call between them and The Academy 13. The Academy 14. Blue Stars 15. Glassmen 16. Troopers 17. Colts 18. Teal Sound 19. Pacific Crest 20. Cascades (would really like to see this group move up!) 21. Mandarins 22. Jersey Surf 23. Pioneer I expect the same Open Class corps from this year to crack the Top 25 to perform Friday (Blue Devils B, Oregon Crusaders, Vanguard Cadets) but think Spartans will continue to improve and may knock off Jersey Surf. I also hear East Coast Jazz may return next year which could be interesting to watch over the next couple years.

  41. I have an nice story to tell... definitely was my favorite thing of DCI 2011... Saturday night, the DCI Event Staff went into 'rain plan' mode, and Cadets and Blue Devils pits were allowed to warm up indoors in the loading dock, which is sort of the 'pre-staging' area of the stadium. The two pits were really getting after it and doing a nice job going through a warmup routine. It was freaking loud in there. Then, the Cavaliers entire corps came in, as this is also the place where there is a water table and many corps circle up for final thoughts from the directors, and they also sing their corps songs. Blue Devils and Cadets pits BOTH stopped and listened as the Cavaliers sang "Over the Rainbow" and "We Are the Corps the Cavaliers." It was awesome, and one of those things that, as I say, "Drum Corps is all about." I was proud of the kids and staffs of all of those corps.

  44. Six years since a title for the Green Machine? That's my vote. They got a taste with the way this year kicked off and didn't quite make it. They'll be playing for keeps next year. Yeahyeahyeah, nobody knows. Just my gut feeling though.
