  1. Tarpon Springs - this past weekend. Amazing - surely the best guard ever to not go to WGI? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_rLGkfOFjg

  2. no corps is going to haul someone around all summer for free. And, for no money, no one is going to put up with the #### they will deal with if something goes wrong.

  3. I am gratified that my book, Spectacular Sound Mixing, http://xtremebrass.com/store/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=28 has been adopted by Drum Corps International as required reading and training manual for all music adjudicators. This will provide some degree of standardization for the evaluation of how sound systems may be best integrated into field shows. Some DCI corps have already been making use of this resource and it may soon be adopted by the BOA and DCA folks, as well.

  4. Are there any all age corps that limit their workout program to 12oz arm curls?

  5. Blue Knights: Hit: Unfortunately, I caught someone massively ticking (check the feet), but the 1992 uniform is one of the iconic looks in the history of DCI: 1984-1990 (the miss)... not so much. Next Up... Carolina Crown

  6. Don't be so quick to switch to a baritone. For me carrying a contra (tuba) was much easier on my back than a bari. Holding a baritone out in front of you will put a lot of stress on your upper back. I agree, cardio cardio cardio!! T25 is an excellent workout to build endurance.

  7. Agreed, my old high school got new uniforms a few years ago that have a cool digital print, but just look completely black past the first few rows of bleachers. Before that we had some that were maybe a little plain up close, had some blocks of black white and purple, but looked really great up top and gave the drill lots of clarity and variety with the backfield stuff. I think maybe having just some more color, and in the case of black, some lighter color to really contrast it helps a lot.

  9. That's almost as neurotic as my response: "Ah, that was a good year!' when the cashier tells me the bill of "17(.)57" or some such and I quote some historical fact such as "George Washington was just finishing junior college then" in order to see how the cashier reacts. Once, true story, the man behind me started crying when the cashier said "18.88" and I said... It turned out his mother had been born that year and today was the anniversary of her death. Strange little things like this is what makes the earth and life so interesting.

  10. I'm guessing both Phantom and BD will have new jackets. They've cut so many pieces off of the 2013 versions in the last few years that there's not a lot left to work with. Mike

  14. OP and Spotify Playlist updated. I went with Christian McBride's big band version of Science Fiction. It was originally a smaller combo piece but I figure the big band is more similar to the drum corps vibe. Obviously the original material is not Spotify. Also, on a selfish note, this music is my jam.

  20. DIBS ON TROOP! The hit: Tie between the classic 60's/70's uniforms and 2013/14. The classic uniform IS the Troopers. Plus, you know, the Black B#### color guard. With the latest version of the uniform, I thought it was a very good way to bring back some of the classic vibe while also keeping it very modern. Also, the Troopers drum major from any year. The miss: 2010. And I marched that year! The uniforms were just very bland and didn't show ANY color from the stands, which is why they added the yellow stripes and drop sashes for 2011. As a bonus, here is a photo of me in said uniform: Honorable mention: that time in the 90's that they wore white shirts and vests or something like that. I don't have a picture. If I did, that one might actually win the "miss" award, the more I think about it. Up next: The Crossmen

  21. People who are 'ragging' are probably just responding to this.... We're gonna continue to define who the Colts are, while we look at new ways to deliver a drum corps performance," said Program Coordinator Marc Sylvester. "It's film noir. It's fresh. It's something nobody's done. But in the end, our plan is just to be a really good drum corps." Interesting show choice...should be interesting to see come together. I hope the Colts are a strong corps in 2015 and I hope they don't use narration like they did in 2014. To me Colts are best when music is first....not narration (See 2009 Fathoms) :) Good luck 2015 Colts.... :)

  22. Many thanks to all those who braved the sun and warmth of a beautiful start to Spring and the fist DC event of 2015 (I think) ... Kudos to all the performers and the FANS through a day of festive fun ... a special shout-out to the young (8-10 yrs old) drummers from PS 130 and the Crimson Kings ... they really stole the show!!!! Now, onto Boston this weekend for more I&E fraternity at the Boston Crusaders Sr show ... maybe someone could start a thread to get the juices flowing for that event ... 23. Sorry, I just think it's completely unnecessary regulation to add pages of rules to cover a problem that simply does not exist.

  25. Though I thought Crown's 2013 semi performance was stronger than finals performance (only by a hair)' their finals performance was still electrifying and had that certain "it" quality that made it an amazing finals, but for me it was an encore performance I will never forget, in Foxboro, MA, pre Gillette days, in 1994. On that hot, murky night, ecstatic fans who had already enjoyed a great show were treated to 27th's "Once More in 94," perhaps my favorite drum corps moment ever.

  27. physically, cardio. be able to jog at least a 5K by the time show season comes along. for carrying a bari, its going to be finding one, and being able to stand tall and hold it correctly for 11 minutes at a time. that is stamina, your muscles are not going to be happy. make sure you support your upper body with a strong center. ab work. don't let the weight sink into your back. it will hurt and cause you issues. and then stretching. the more flexibility you have, the better your body will handle the activity. legs, back, and hamstrings especially. as far as playing, tone and flexibility are key. so lots of long tones and slurs. and then scales and arpeggios. make sure you can articulate consistently however the corps of your choice suggests you to. you'll want your sound to fit into theirs. I will say for baritone look for an arban book. hope this helps. good luck.

  31. Cardio, cardio and more cardio! Today's drills are much more demanding than they used to be. The older members that we have come back all say that this is the biggest challenge to them. Most can hang in the brass arc, but really have to pick it up when it comes to movement. The days of park and bark are long gone! Dan

  32. I marched New York Skyliners the summer of 2000 when I was 50 years old, four years after having knee surgery for a torn meniscus. The last time that I had marched with a competitive field corps was in the early 1990's. My only suggestion is to make sure that you are in decent overall shape, and be prepared to have some sore days after the first few field rehearsals. My weight in 2000 (and now) is actually less than what I weighed right after I got out of college, so that helped. I found that I had no trouble keeping up physically with the demands of the show. You may find the mental part tougher - being able to sustain a high level of effort and concentration for the entire season. I will say that I was ready for some extended rest that fall after the final weekend at DCA championships.
