  3. Wow. Twice in one day, you have claimed greater knowledge than myself regarding what I think.

  4. Can you make your point about not disrespecting people based on what group they belong to without disrespecting people based on what group they belong to?

  5. Got a little misty here.

  6. Every time I see 'BLM' I think of the Bureau of Land Management (government agency that manages federal lands, mostly in western US). In another life I had extensive interaction with these chaps.

  7. FINALLY SOMEONE GETS IT! (always believed in you Jeff) Seems that a bunch of Boomers and Millennials dont understand that a lot of alumni in recent years are now speaking out on their trash experiences in the activity. Some have felt bullied and even threatened because of what they want to be identified as, while others are calling out BS back of the bus hazing traditions. They want to change the activity to be 100% safe and inclusive. Cadets put this new release out after getting trashed on social media for putting a post out during pride month that some members felt was BS fluff. I've always thought drum corps was pretty good about being inclusive, but it seems that we need to do better.

  8. In honor of the 4th, and also friend Ironlips who arranged the music, here is the 1971 Garfield Cadets at Dallas VFW prelims. Show titled "America, the Brave" about the Revolutionary War. America, the Brave

  9. I so wish we could get Crown’s 2019 ballad from the official DCI finals video just for the week, but I’m guessing that may not be possible.

  10. Y'all can "do" better; Cadets 2019 drum line in the lot at Lisle, IL from one year ago. Horrible show with a great line! This, (pause for dramatic effect), is all that matters.* *And Jay Bocook's return.

  11. I marched in the Scouts in 1985. I will never forget the sound when we came out of the tunnel for finals. The crowd EXPLODED! It was so loud that we could not hear our drum major start the show. You can see this if you watch the video. The back of the horn block actually steps off about two counts after the front of the block! We did recover, but that was rough. The top 12 in 1985 was very strong. Great music and some wonderful performances. The top 4 corps had amazing shows. Truly one of the best years of my life!!

  12. Can you make your point about treating people better without engaging in personal attacks?

  13. I'm not a DCI insider and what you're saying is foreign to me: ("unwritten rule that is you were a person of color, you did not march with Corps X"). I've never heard this. Not saying it's not true, I'm just saying in over 50 years I've never heard it and I have dear friends that are former members, instructors, and executives in the activity. If it is true, the activity has devolved and needs to be fixed. When I marched (1969 - 1975) there were only three different types of people: horn players, drummers, and guard members. That was it.

  14. I wouldn't hold my breath. The same people that scream about limitations and leveling the playing field are the ones virtue signalling. HOW many times have we been over placement vs corps income....and its never addressed. People like their elite little clubs and say all the right things but never do the right things.

  15. Dilberts Buzzword Bingo anyone? Not sure what Virtue Signaling means but taking it to mean say the right words but is there substance behind them. Wait and see for me....,

  16. Virtue signaling isn’t partway towards addressing the problem. Virtue signaling encumbers addressing the problem and, as a result, contributes to the problem. I will leave it to others to decide whether the announcement is virtue signaling. I personally hope it isn’t, but there are aspects of its nature and rhetoric that I find concerning. And given the trends we have seen with organizations rushing out to embrace specific movements they don’t fully understand, with little regard to the harms that may be done to the very communities they claim to support, I can understand why thoughtful people might be skeptical.

  18. July 5, 2002, 10:13pm ET - Tour Day 43 Allentown, PA → Hanover, PA Well, it turned out that we got a free day after all. Instead of going to Hersheypark, we did a performance and then had free time at Dorney Park. I, for one, appreciated the time off. I got to spend a few hours with my family and Megan. The parades yesterday were pretty rough due to the extreme heat conditions, but the corps took care of us as best they could and we made it through pretty well. About 20 minutes into the ride from Bristol, Rhode Island to Wakefield, Massachusetts, our bus shut down because it was overheating. We dispersed onto the rest of the buses, but it was very crowded and uncomfortable. I was actually one of the lucky ones because I got a seat while others had to stand for over an hour. So all in all, we’re working towards erasing our last show in Bristol with a strong showing in Hershey tomorrow night. (Next post is July 7.)

  20. she certainly does, and gets paid pretty well for it compared to our friends/family, lol. good for her, and good for the people it brings joy to. i'll always agree that it does nothing but help dci and the marching arts.

  21. I’m reading it as the corps will not put up with exclusive or bullying behavior by any individual member. That’s not being “woke” that’s saying they’re not going to put up with anyone’s crap that could harm another member or the corps itself. Had the same thing where I worked and so do many other places. And in this overly legalese world you have to put down in writing what you wouldn’t put up with. Otherwise some clod will use it as a loophole “you didn’t tell me that...”

  22. But it’s “the biggest threat to this activity we love”.lol I guess a global pandemic with no vaccine that shut down the season means nothing.

  24. Seriously the article says that Cadets will try to make sure everyone feels a part of the corps (aka included) and only thing you get is sexual orientation. I read it as checking that no one is shunned, threatened, harassed, etc, etc for any reason.

  25. The only problem with this ( although it would be nice ) Many of the top corps do not have a local base, Many corps would not even be around today if it weren't for potential members from many states away. Many staff brought members from their areas ( HS students to fill spots in corps ) How many members are actually from the areas of corps. My experience with this , I would say very few. I would agree local membership would solve some of the problems although the days of sending members home after a day of rehearsal is gone. The days of heading off to Mc Donalds to grab something quick is gone. If we went back to any of that or shoving kids in death trap school busses the outrage of the public would be huge and even with liable situations. Creative thinking for sure is needed moving forward and being discussed for sure but we are in very hard times and handling it will be a very delicate situation for sure.

  26. We have existing friends/family or make new friends that we want to expose to the activity. We want them to understand exactly why we like this. It does not always happen. So often the appreciation for the skill/musicianship is lost. Video reactions like this feed into that interest in having people appreciate an activity that we love Courtney reacts the way we want our friends/family to react.

  27. Italian composer Ennio Morricone passed away today in Rome at the age of 91. He is best known for his legendary movie and TV scores ranging from Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns to his Oscar-winning score for The Hateful Eight and a host of others in between, and even the theme to the 1978 FIFA World Cup. And drum corps is no stranger to his excellent compositions, dating back to the Queensmen using music from For a Few Dollars More in 1968, and as recently as Carolina Crown and Jersey Surf just last year. Here’s a complete listing of all of Ennio Morricone’s works that have been heard in drum corps: http://dcxmuseum.org/index.cfm?view=search&Composer=Morricone%2C Ennio I hope to hear more of his works on the field in the future. RIP.
