  6. Lauren Vogel Weiss asked me to post the following on DCP: Marty's memorial services were very moving... over 200 drummers played during the visitation on Tuesday night (the Brother Martin HS drum line, plus LSU, USM, ULL and the Regiment Alumni). And there were probably more than 1000 people there. During the mass on Wednesday morning, John Wooton and Marty's brother Jimmy played snare drum (along with Marty's stepson on bass and assistant band director on fife). Here is the Facebook link. Start at the bottom and work your way up - that's slightly more chronological. The videos are marked "public." Once you're on this page, you can view the other nine videos posted by RegimentPerc82, Lauren Vogel Weiss.

  7. I was always surrounded by family in drum corps but never had the good fortune to win a dca championship myself... However, I still think that my daughter Sara and her husband Ted Mascari (Empire percussion arranger) had what was almost certainly the greatest family achievement in DCA history when Sara performed for the Brigadiers and Ted was the 2nd drum major for the Empire Statesmen in 1997 in Allentown PA - They tied for the DCA Championship... In honor of the tie, they were allowed to break ranks and meet and kiss on the 50 yard line ... two rings ... same night ... two different corps who'd a thunk it possible? with current systems designed to avoid ties - that may never happen again.

  8. Jeff, I would enjoy attending the Allentown shows. Just send your private jet to Texarkana When I arrive we'll get some sweet succulent frozen bliss. I think hyperbole is the flavor of the month. Of course being Drum Corps fans, we will not be paying for any of this. Kevin

  16. I was hesitant to go to Allentown, an 8 hour drive and what not. Boo's article convinced me to go. And then it turned into a 10 day DCI trip that starts in allentown and ends in indianapolis.

  17. What a jaundiced view of things. This is a depressing thread that is bound not to end well in my opinion, and I'm not sure what the motivations are for it. Who cares what will be the topics of most controversy, most interest, or a lightening rod for discussion this year. Just sit back and see what shakes out. My hunch, they'll be enough topics that'll come about to wet the appetite of all tastes during the coming months.

  18. From their website, as of today (14 OCT 2011): 1991 saw the emergence of “America’s Hometown Celebration” and all the exciting things that have become synonymous with “AHTC”. Voila! The birth of what has now become one of the premiere events in the "Drum Corps world." Drum corps’ from far and near vie for a spot in the lineup. This year introduces you to the “Musical Ambassadors of New York”, the Westchester Brassmen, hailing from Harrison, NY. Also new, all the way from Quebec, Les Diplomates. The “Reunion Concert” Saturday evening, November 21 will present to you some of the legends of Drum Corps. Our 2011 Lineup, thus far: The Bridgemen Crusader Senior Drum & Bugle Corps Defender, Rockland, MA Hawthorne Caballeros Les Diplomates Park City Pride Reilly Raiders Westchester Brassmen Barbara “Gobbi” DiRusso, Producer & Musical Coordinator - Reunion Concert

  20. I not only support the current Teal Sound management, I support the decision to hire Joel Moody. While I knew it had the possibility of it being being a PR problem because of those who would make an uninformed snap judgement and being driving those with an ax to grind with the new management team. If you are a member of Teal Sound, the parent of a member of Teal Sound you probably know me, if you are the parent of a potential Teal Sound member get to know me (or ask around about me). I have Volunteered full time for the last three years and completed three full tours with Teal Sound and one thing I put above all else is the members of the Corps. I have three daughters two of which have marched with Teal Sound in the past, both started marching at the age of 16, none of whom marched this last season. They may or may not march again but that is driven by school schedules and not one person or group of persons currently with Teal and certainly not Joel. I was aware, in detail, of the incident every one has been discussing here and can assure you I have not one concern bout Joel and especially about him being a predator of kids. I was unconcerned enough to allow my 17 year old daughter to fly in and fill a vacant intern position with Teal Sound this year. My daughter's work required direct interaction and working with Joel on a daily basis with no issues or even minuscule concern on mine or my daughters part, FYI my daughter was aware of the incident prior to coming in. What Joel did was unethical and wrong and regardless of why it happened or the intent of the text it was wrong. Posters on this board have said if parents do I background check on Teal Sound staff they will pull there kids. Joel has received , as far as I know, a class II volunteer rating in the state of Florida since this happened which means he has nothing on his record that prevents him with working minors. His current position with Teal Sound is working with Staff at Teal Sound and not with the members and if even if he did I have no concern. I feel, having worked with Joel, that he has learned how something even sent in a text, he never attempted anything with the young lady, can be wrong and if nothing else he works to ensure nothing that can be misconstrued or appears inappropriate happens again. I ask that those who are involved or planning to be involved with Teal Sound take the time to find out the truth about this and then make a judgement. To those who are using this to throw rocks at Teal I suggest you move on as you have your own issues you do not want to come out that I feel are just as bad. I have restrained from posting as I feel nothing can be accomplished by doing so but I will not allow uninformed to rule the day. A person/parent hearing about this has a right to be concerned and find out the details in order to make their decision but I can assure you you will not find it on DCP. Will not post again on this subject if you are a parent and concerned contact me directly and I will take the time to fill you in on the details and hopefully address your concerns. I have no skin in this game except as someone who has given three years, countless hours along with my body and soul to drum corps. "Never argue with a pig. It just frustrates you and irritates the pig."

  22. I'm in a professional aviation fraternity at Auburn, we were having our semesterly bonfire for the pledges out in the woods. So we were out there, doing the normal things that college kids do, which in this case was playing edward forty-hands. For those of you who don't know what that is, its a game where you duct tape yourself to your partner by one wrist, tape 40oz beverages to both of your hands, and you can't un-tape yourself until you've drank all 80 oz. Quickest team to finish wins! Anyways, my little, whom I had just met that night, is super, duper redneck. The guy has probably the deepest drawl I've ever heard, and I'm in Alabama, so that's saying something. He drives around in a giant truck, hunts regularly... heck, he was even wearing camo pants! But at one point he happened to mention that he was a drummer in high school, I asked him if he ever saw any corps stuff, and not only has he heard of it, but he's been to the Atlanta regional for each of the last five years! So, we spent the next hour or so, taped together at the wrist, talking about DCI between gulps of nasty beer. It's really funny... there are more DCI fans out there than you might think! It was a funny image... this stereotypical redneck in the camo pants and boots with a big ol' dip in his mouth, telling me in that drawl about how much of a Phan he is, and how XXXXX corps is overrated, and about how he almost cried at XXXXX's show that one year, etc... Hilarious!

  28. Close, but you forgot the most important step. 1. Administration 2. Design staff 3. Instructional staff 4. Members But all four must work hand in hand to see it all come together. When you have 1, 2, and 3, you will attract a higher level of 4.

  30. Don't forget "support staff". A well run organization provides all staff and members the tools they need while being well rested, well fed and safely delivered to all destinations. Members and staff with freedom and energy to be creative is powerful indeed.

  33. SCV will pass Phantom. Bluecoats will not faceplant as hard as some would like. Glassmen with effective arranger = finals. People will complain about Richard Hinshaw not being Michael Gaines.

  34. General predictions that very well may change in a few months: -SCV passing Phantom -The Cavaliers not medaling (as much as it hurts to say! :( ) -SCV medaling -SCV taking percussion -The Academy in Finals -Madison higher than 10th

Blue Knights What I would like to see (These are definitely not going to happen....but it would be cool in my opinion) 1. SCV 2. Phantom 3. Spirit of Atlanta 4. Madison Scouts 5. Blue Stars 6. Cadets 7. Cavaliers 8. Blue Devils 9. Boston Crusaders 10. Bluecoats 11. Crossmen 12. Troopers

  36. 1.) Cadets 2.) Crown (maybe in another year or two, they'll take the gold) 3.) SCV (big staff changes, big move up?) 4.) Blue Devils- anything lower would be stupid 5.) Cavaliers- New drill designer could be a slow start 6.) Bloo- maybe higher, maybe lower, new brass staff could change a lot 7.) Phantom- what can no JD Shaw mean for them? 8.) Madison- keep working the identity, and pleasing the fans 9.) BK- more crowd friendly shows, but missing something needed to move up 10.) BS- teething phase trying to find what makes them "them" 11.) Boston- No Jay Kennedy means a big hit 12.) Academy- Andre Feagin. 'Nuff said 13.) Spirit (not sure, just a slight step down) 14.) Glassmen (no room at the top) 15.) Troopers (need something to re-establish their "brand" while still being successful) 16.) Crossmen (starting to find their stride in the DCI world, look out for them in 2013) 17.) PC- consistent? 18.)OC corps 1 19.) Teal Sound- new director, but they've found their niche 20.) Jersey Surf- (making DCI fun again) 21.) OC corps 2 22.) Mandarins- they could really be anywhere from 17-25) 23.) Pioneer- need a lot of work, if they really want to make the move up 24.) OC corps 3 25.) OC corps 5 26.) Cascades- sorry guys, someone has to take the bottom spot

  38. Since we have no idea, except past performance, I will use CI: 1-3: BD, Cadets, Cavies (in no particular order) 4-7: Bloo, Crown, PR, SCV 8-11: BK, Boston, BS, Madison 12: Crapshoot Remember: When you make a claim about who's going to make noise (Madison, Boston, etc), you have to also spell out who's most likely to stumble, making room for the noise-makers. For example, when Spirit was making noise last Winter, everyone pretty much agreed Glassmen were most vulnerable. Lo and behold, it worked out that way. Bloo and SCV certainly look vulnerable to me, but SCV has a clear history of turning things around; Bloo, not so much, except they haven't been lower than 7th since 2002. SCV HAS NEVER BEEN LOWER THAN 8th. (No other corps can say that.) Can PR get away with playing 3 ballads again? Lucky for them, SCV and Bloo were so "out there," no one "got it." Everyone "gets it" when PR plays ballads, so they did three of them, lol. Not sure that's going to fly again.

  39. Sorry...there are many subjects on DCP that live on forever and shouldnt..the G8 stuff went on forever and ever and I think this subject is a little more important than that. With that said that is what happens in our activity and what many powers to be want to happen....lots of talk then nothing. Some subjects ( not a particular person ) need to be up front and stay there.. Maybe it will make some think twice. JMO

  40. I completely agree... I mean, back in my day our horn books were so easy we'd throw in a few quarter notes mid-July to try to beef it up a bit.

  41. Phantom Regiment has a PR team I've long respected. Not only do they present plenty of pre-season info for the program books, (enough that I've never had to ask for more), but they always have creative ways of getting people to talk about their shows weeks before we really know what's going on. They know what buttons to push and they do it well. Other corps do it well, also, but I keep waiting for all to discover the role of whimsy and speculation in generating interest among fans. And really, what else are we going to talk about except our anticipation of the next season?

  47. Yeah, but it doesn't mean that those rookies are going to come back. The rookies that loved the brass staff that was let go, may not come back. The rookies that didn't like the old brass staff, may be jaded about the whole SCV organization and how things were handled and they too may not come back. With lots of staff turnover (which SCV has been the model of), means that you are probably not going to have good retention and therefore, will be young. Listen, I am not saying SCV is going to finish 8th. Not at all actually. However, if they do I wouldn't be surprised because they, as a corps, have been trending downward. Sure, they hired some new (and in my opinion, better) staff. That does not mean that all is fixed and even if it does, it does not at all mean that all will be fixed right away. Saying that SCV is going to automatically be in the hunt for a medal and especially a championship NEXT year is putting unfair expectations on the members and the staff. Building that in this activity takes time. Look how long it took for Crown to build up to that level and even then they have only medaled once. Having the reaction of "Really? SCV in eighth? ok, dude" makes it sound like 8th is so far out of the question that the poster who predicted them there is WAY off base. It also implies that SCV is bound for much much higher than 8th. I think that is both unrealistic and unfair fo 2012. Maybe they will be in the hunt in 2013. Certainly they should be in 2014 if the staff stays intact. Could you imagine what it would be like if a championship corps fell all the way to 8th or ninth the next year? What if someone would have predicted that on here? They would have been ripped to shreds, right?... Didn't a recent championship drum corps fall all the way from 1st to 9th in one year? Oh yeah, they did, and a majority of this "dream team design" staff were the ones responsible for both the first, and the eighth place finish. So, those are just a few reasons why I say that they could finish in 8th and I wouldn't be surprised. I think they will finish a little higher (5th or 6th maybe?), but if they finish lower I would not be surprised. Anyways, what I meant by this all was: Give it time.
